webcomics were the next big thing from 2000 to 2015, everybody had one, xkcd, Ctrl+Alt+Del, Dinosaur Comics
, Penny Arcade, Hello Cthulhu, the list could go on... what went wrong? why did people stop caring about webcomics? did it just mature as a format and converge with actual comics? now there seems to be only sloppy politics webcomics, but nothing with an original vision from an author
>>
>>150152323
I honestly don't know. My only guess is everything got lame and it took the steam out of everyone's sails. Webcomics has this kind of playfulness like: "Yeah we live in this safe and cushy society and we can be a little silly, too." It's sort of like the equal and opposite reaction of that 90's ennui of: "OMG I've got a well paying job and no problems I'm going insane ahhhhh" but with humor.
>>
Smartphones took off and no one's gonna read your comics anymore unless they're in a format suited for phones.
>>
Death of the internet is a major factor.
People aren't going to go to your website so your comic isn't going to get views unless it's on an app. And no one's gonna look at your app just to view a comic.

i like stonetoss, but it's not that great and specially it's not that creative, the jokes pretty much write themselves, though i have to admit that stonetoss has a great touch to make the jokes very expressive and streamlined without adding unnecessary elements that other artists do ruining the joke

This, webcomics existed in a bubble where the internet was much smaller and subcultures were more fringe and niche. Once everyone started using the internet, it became predictable and commercial.

>>150152323
Webcomics have always been a little niche. Artists now would rather use their energy to keep up to date with weekly art trends on social media instead of working on something unfamiliar to the public for weeks at a time.

>>
>>150153010
all webcomics are stupid, you just have to find the kind of stupid that makes you chuckle... webcomics and newspaper comics have always been a very casual kind of entertainment, almost more about feeling comfy reading it than any kind of serious quality

They’re not “dead” you just have to play the algorithm, our entire society is headed into tech and crypto worship and if you work in entertainment you have to either get with it or get lost, as a wise man once said.

Back in the day it was simple: you had genres and sub genres…well now EVERYTHING is a sub genre of a sub genre, you must find your lane and base and milk them dry, if you do so successfully you’ll attach others who want to win over the algorithm or feed off the pot of worship and discourse that illuminates from your franchise to feel involved in something- invincible, the boys, Amphibia, mawts- all found their weird little niches and RAN WITH IT.

Trying to hit for mass global appeal is dead, small market that transforms into big market through the nature of the internet is the new wave

pic-related has given Dexter a MASSIVE resurgence through a meme for people who don’t even watch the show, it’s all about the algorithm now

Popular culture became extremely solipsistic, borne out of the terror of 'appropriation', so that unless based on an existing property, every movie, book, comic, or webcomic is written for an audience of one, its author.

Webcomics kind of fell off as millennials grew up, got jobs, and no longer had time to spend reading webcomics all day and didn't have to settle exclusively for free entertainment.
Kind of like how the gay online tumblr fandoms for zoomers are starting to die out and be replaced by gay online tumblr fandoms for gen alpha, now that the oldest zoomers are in their late 20s, are starting to have real careers that take up more time, and are about to hit their first *real* identity crisis. They've slowly started to realize that wasting their youth on pointless internet shit and arguing with retards over drawings was not a good idea.

The internet shrunk dramatically where if you're not on one of like 10 websites you may as well not exist.
It didn't feel like that back in 2000.

>>150153935
>borne out of the terror of 'appropriation'
Dude, only like the 5% most libtarded tumblrina authors care about that. Also, it's retarded to think that if you write about what you like and what you know then you yourself the only person it's for. There are only so many topics, you're bound to have millions people who could be potentially interested if you do a good job

Good movies are still being made : Mars Express came out in 2023 and is fucking amazing. Metal Lords and Entergalactic where good.
Good music is still being made : Unleash the Archers, The Jazz Avengers
Good TV shows are still being made : The Penguin, The Night Manager, Wednesday, Euphoria, Arcane
I'm sure good books are still being written but my eyesight is shot with age and reading with glasses isn't fun.

Your problem is that you refuse to go out and find the good stuff. You insist on sitting still and letting corporations dictated what you consume. Get off your ass and search out the good stuff.

Webcomics have died out because people don't go to random one-off websites that only serve one purpose anymore. They go to aggregator social media sites like Twixter and the like to see all the stuff they like at once. These sites also make it impossible to read a comic like It's Walky or CAD that have storylines, and if you make a silly goofy gag a day strip like VG Cats or Penny Arcade you'll get drowned out quickly by the hundreds of other people making comics about the same subject. You might go viral once or twice but a significant audience is not going to keep reading you consistently. The webcomics that are still around are only around because their creators hit it big when the medium was its peak. Social media, and by extension smart phones, destroyed the fucking Internet. They killed it.

Gold Rush Mentality.
The second you're hearing about how lucrative and awesome something is, it's already too late. Someone will have a breakout success, then there will be fuckloads of imitators, and then... OOPS! Market is oversaturated and all the money is gone.
It's the same shit for coders, for example. I remember hearing for the last 10 years about how awesome computer science is, and how computer science is the future and- UH OH! Those jobs are now fucking worthless and they're all being fired and/or replaced with AI!
Happens over and over, and yet we never learn our lessons. The real secret sauce is to just do what you're naturally inclined to do, and just hope that you get lucky enough to ride a wave nobody sees coming. By the time you're hearing about it, it's already too late to paddle out.
All these webcomics suck ass because the artists just wanted a gluttonous slice of pie, but there was never enough pie to go around.
