Some people say after season 2, some after The Void and some S4, when do you think Modern Gumball started?

S4

Season 5
Not that Season 4 or Season 3 are perfect or anything.

Gumball is all NuGumball. The show came out in 2011.

What's the difference between season 2 and 3?

It does depend on what you mean by the "nu" part. 2 is when they very much found their footing with both the artstyle and cynicism, erasing a lot of the childish attitude for the "fuck this world" view. But it still maintained a lot of the chaotic energy of Season 1 and didn't really have much to comment on. 4 is when they just dove headfirst into liberal politics and social commentary, trying to follow in the footsteps of South Park. And by 5 they just doubled-down on everything of 4, being the "love it or hate it" show it is nowadays.

I don't like the lighting of season 3 when compared to season 2. The Shell is like one of the few episodes of S3 that comes to mind as an episode that looks as good as a season 2 episode. So clearly the animators know season 2 looks good, but they just don't do it for whatever reasons they have unless it's one of the the most important episodes of season 3.
I also don't like circle eyes but I'm not going into that again.
I also don't like the voice change. I get why it's done but season 1 into season 2 felt like Gumball and Darwin grew up even though the show never acknowledges it as such. In my mind it feels like a regression of the characters when they lose the original actors, and the writers basically stating they will never age doesn't sit right to me. I get the show wants to be self-aware but I don't think this should have been one of their instances where they insist on that.
I don't like the writing of season 3. I would say it's a lot more of a gradual decline than something super sudden but it is still enough to irk me. Honestly I think it just comes down to the dynamics between Gumball and Darwin because I believe there's less bite to them in every regard since season 2 and I miss that. I know "mean-spirited" autists aren't going to like hearing that I want a little meanness between the two but I'm saying it.
Also Season 2 had the highest peaks with episodes like The Sweaters and The Job. Season 3 not living up to those episodes isn't exclusive to that season alone but I had to mention it.

Modern Gumball started in Season 4 when they created new school kids to make episodes for because I see it as a huge indication that the writers felt like they were mostly done writing the initial cast of students they started with.
The original cast is still there and they still got episodes and stuff, and it's not that they really did much with the new kids either, but considering that a fair bit of them were made to be one-and-done just to help flesh out Anais really goes to show that the writers really wanted to have a stronger focus on building character for the family specifically instead of the entire world. We also get Clare (one episode) and Hotdog Guy (three episodes and he never actually feels like he belongs with the other kids until season 7 shoves him in the back of Simian's class) to help accentuate Gumball to an absurd degree and that's effectively it. I'm aware that Julius is also this sort of thing but at least it's done in the season that actually introduces to us the personalities of these students. And then there's Sarah too but we know she gets tons of love from the writers.

Gumball felt like a completely different starting with season 2, artstyle and humor was just so strange to me.

S1 was kiddie shit, diet-SpongeBob. Nobody would remember it if they kept that direction.

It's odd too because Anais was listed as being in Gumball's class in S2, guess that's another thing that got retconned.

>And then there's Sarah too but we know she gets tons of love from the writers
that on some level it feels like she belongs with the core student cast because they gave her the bare minimum at the very least by initially making her an outsider to everyone before fitting in.*
All that said, it just makes images like this feel hollow to me. The show keeps peddling every once in a while that these students matter, even now in season 7's intro, but maybe five of the twenty or so students mattered in the first half of season 7 when it was double of that in season 2. They aren't convincing me of anything other than Gumball is a Christmas tree and the students are the ornaments.
god i need to learn how to finish my thoughts the first time

Sarah essentially replaced Molly in season 2, the latter never appeared once that season and in season 3, it was explained she was sent to the Void for being boring.

I already know all of that.
