>Rising actor Matt Hagen (Tom Rhys Harries) volunteers for an experimental medical procedure to restore his appearance after gangsters disfigure his face. The experiment is conducted by Dr. Caitlin Bates (Naomi Ackie), the controversial CEO of a biotech startup seeking to create cutting edge medical technology. Bates initially sees curing Hagen as a way to grow her company, but the two ultimately fall in love. At first, the experiment is successful, but soon Hagen’s body begins to transform into a clay-like substance that can reshape itself into anyone’s appearance. Bates’s fiancé, police detective John Miller (Max Minghella), grows suspicious of her relationship with Hagen at the same time as he investigates the gruesome murders of the gangsters responsible for Hagen’s disfigurement.

Why does Clayface need a solo movie? You'd think DC would want to avoid making the same mistakes Sony made with Morbius and Kraven, but apparently not.
>>
>>150160266
Joker 1 made a billion dollars and everyone loved The Penguin.
>>
>>150160266
They've described it as a straight up horror film, and plan to target it to that crowd. The budget is also reportedly low for a cbm, so if it hits it could actually be more succesful than a more blockbuster type film than Supergirl.
Part of Gunn's promises for the DCU is that they will play with genre and diversify the type of films they make, so this is the first test (Lanterns also has a bit of this since it's been described as a police procedural type show).
>>
>>150160337
*like Supergirl

Looks more like Tampon Face.
>>
Who is this supposed to be for? Not Clayface fans.
But who the fuck else would want or care about a fucking Clayface movie?
>>
>>150160337
The problem with Lanterns isn't that it's a police procedural, it's that everything so far describes a mundane procedural rather than a sci-fi one.

A fluke.

Because it had Matt Reeves behind it and is canon to The Batman. It's literally the same shit as Hawkeye and Wandavision for the MCU.

Most movies are about characters the audience isn't familiar with. You can make a movie out of any story.

The script was written independently by Mike Flanagan, who is pretty bif right now on horror circles. Gunn said the reason they're making the film was because he really liked the script.
Zach Cregger, director of Weapons, recently revealed he did a similar thing penning a script of his own.

Why is Clayface even a villain? Couldn't he do his acting job a lot better now that he can shapeshift?
>>
>>150162241
Basil Karlo in the comics was a washed up actor that became a serial killer out of petty revenge
>>
>>150162241
That story is nu bullshit.
Basil was a washed up silent film actor who got no recognition when a remake of his most popular role, Clayface, was made. So he put on the Clayface mask and killed the people involved, until Batman stopped him.
Matt Hagen was a soldier of fortune who discovered some weird glowing urns with mud in them. Upon being covered in the mud, he gained shapeshifting powers he used as a criminal for hire until he died in COIE.
Preston Payne was an ugly geneticist who sought to use Hagen's dna to give himself the power to fix huis ugliness, but instead found he needed to melt people into protoplasm and consume it for survival. He eventually met a Kobra cult member named Sondra who was given powers similar to Hagen's and they had a kid named Cassius.
The Mud Pack was formed of Basil, Preston, and Sondra when Basil was quite old and dying of cancer, with goal of making him the ultimate Clayface with all their powers. He still hasn't acted in a literal century, however.

So unlike Joker (thank god) Clayface might reappear in the DCU? While I'm not a fan dicing up villains into solo projects (look at SONY), at least here Clayface can be sold as a legit villainous protagonist. Plus Karlo/Hagan is rife with potential as a narrative driving character that I think most actors would kill for. Perhaps he'll start like classic Clayface, disfigured face and doing things with limited face morphing like Darkman, and then as the film progresses we'll get our straight up mud man with hammer fists and everything

It should be mentioned that in the modern continuity the chemicals not only made his face malleable to fix his disfigurement, but there were serious side effects to his mental state. Fits of rage, identity issues, and of course being seen as a complete freak in his true form.

In the recent One Bad Day story, Clayface goes on a Hollywood killing spree to essentially create the career/magnum opus he always dreamed of, playing director, actor, producer all at once after dealing with setbacks.

Being Clayface isn't what its cracked up to me. You lose yourself to every person to play, and you can't keep those forms indefinitely. You're just a ball of must desperate in keeping a human form and thus your humanity
>>
>>150160192
He doesn't look very clay here
>>
>>150164126
It's likely right after his accident that ruins his career
>>
>>150160759
That's how Cregger got the Resident Evil movie. He just wrote a script because he liked the games and now years later he's getting to make it.
>>
>>150160192
I wish Man-bat was getting the horror solo film over Clayface
>>
>>150160467
Actually it is for Clayface fans, especially since they are using the Matt Hagan name for the character than using the OG serial killer Clayface's name
>>
>>150160469
It's basically "True Detective but the lovecraft stuff is actually real and not just Matthew McConaughey tripping balls on reddit cush", like the premise is about Hal and Jon investigating a peculiar murder out in the boonies only to discover a terrifying mystery that culminates in an eldritch threat reveal.
>>
>>150164838
Not him but why does Matt Hagan matter? I get that BTAS was sort of an amalgam since Karlo was originally a guy in a mask and Matt was changed by seabed clay to actually become a clay monster but the entire slighted actor bit comes from Basil Karlo
>>
>>150163870
>>150160192
All the Clayface and peacemaker leaks point to both Clayface and Robert Patterson Batman part of the DCU.
>>
>>150164912
Gunn said he doesn't want Pattison Batman in his continuity, nor should it be. It's a completely different tone and setting, more so than just the normal Gotham vs Metropolis stuff. He's too grounded. Brave & The Bold is the DCU Batman. If anything from The Batman cameos in Peacemaker, it's just going to be a multiverse reference given the dimensional closet Chris has access to.
>>
>>150164945
Technically it's Matt Reeves who doesn't want his Epic Crime Saga to be part of the DCU. Gunn has stated that he has thought about it and is constantly having discussions with Reeves over it but ultimately leaves the decision up to him.

I think even if Pattinson is brought into the DCU, they'll have to age him up like eight years after his trilogy because DCU Batman's whole thing is going to be that he has the entire Bat-family with him for once.
>>
>>150162241
In the Batman cartoon, Matt Hagan is an actor who was in a car crash that disfigured him. Roland Daggart, a corrupt big pharma guy, offered him a miracle cream that lets users reshape their flesh as a guinea pig test subject. Matt restored his face and continued his career, hiding his disfigurement from society. But the cream has chemicals that left Hagan physically addicted to it beyond needing it to restore his face, along with Dagget being the only person who could give it to him. So Dagget blackmailed Matt into being his personal corporate spy and culminating in him framing Bruce Wayne for theft of Dagget Industry secrets. Which led to Matt being chased by Batman and falling into a bat of the cream, turning him into a giant mud monster and rendering him homicidally insane
>>
>>150164872
That's the damn problem. A decent Green Lantern procedural would look more like Babylon 5, but instead they're aping the style of something already popular since it's more budget friendly.
>>

Do you have any idea the what profit margins are big studio horror movies are, especially WB's horror movies?
>>
>>150164945
No, it's sadly happening. Reeves bend the knee with the stipulation that his trilogy will be exempt from any DCU crossovers. That's the compromise. Pattinson has mellowed out now that he's a father and wants to chase big bags instead of artsy roles. Everyone wins.
>>
>>150160192
>do Basil Karlo
>call him Matt Hagen
How bizarre.
>>
>>150160759
So, Gunn has no plan and will change everything on a whim? Okay, why doesn't he just do a Superman trilogy on his own and can the DCU?
>>
>>150166117
The overarching DCU plan is designed to be flexible so they won't be as constrained or constipated as the MCU was during the multiverse saga. Each entry can work as a standalone that can be enjoyed on its own to avoid the homework dilemma.

Clayface was quickly greenlit because a full script was ready and it was cheap and easy to make ($40 million budget).
>>
>>150160266
Those movies only failed because they were incredibly terrible
>>
>>150166257
That and they were still marketing themselves as CBM movies while Clayface is trying to appeal to the Blumhouse audience.
>>
>>150166194
There is no DCU. Stop. Get a grip. There's just The Superman Saga and The Batman Saga. Stop bootlicking. It's over. Elseworlds is the way forward. Gunn will get his Superman film saga with Superman/Supergirl and that's it. He will be let go and DC Studios will be dissolved.
>>
>>150160505

Clayface is based as fuck, Morbius and Kraven are not
>>
>>150160192
>>150160266
It's a bold idea, but as long as the budget sticks to normal horror movie levels instead of capeshit levels, there's a good chance it'll be profitable, and it can impress normies with the idea DC studios can offer a diverse output. Of course, the movie still has to be good or at least a decent horror movie.
>>
>>150166103
Stop being weird with this whole Pattinson in the DCU thing, goddammit. Don't you realize how degenerate you all sound?

>>
>>150166108
To the average fan, Clayface is Matt Hagan and to the average comic fan, Basil is supposed to be like Peter Cushing from the film Madhouse, a slasher villain in a mask
>>
>>150169678
I have hope in Reeves that he does slasher Clayface
>>
>>150167807
People hated it because of the film itself, not for the idea of a solo villain movie
>>
>>150169697
I remember one of the very early rumours for The Batman 2 was that the serial killer version of Clayface would be one of the villains, if not the main one. However given the film has taken so long to develop and the DCU doing it's own take on the character, I doubt that's the case anymore.

Freeze could be a natural progression, just relate his origin with the flood or something.

Y'know, it could have been cool. Like, imagine if you had first an actual successful Batman movie franchise. You could do Clayface as a movie within the movie world, as the 're-make of the silent classic' from Basil's origin that set off his psychosis. You could even feature 'clips' from the 'original silent classic' playing in the movie. Then during the credits you could have the camera pan out, showing the credits are playing on a theatre screen, as people leave. You could have snippets of 'overheard' conversations, some mentioning the 'original silent classic', some mentioning the Bat or Batman that has recently appeared stalking the night. We continue panning out and back to the very darkest corner of the cinema as the credit roll ends: under the logo for the Monarch Theatre we see a sour old man who sits in shadow. The ushers know him, saying 'Mr Karlo, that was the last showing and it's time we close the theatre, sir.' Mr Karlo's only reaction is to slowly put on the original Clayface mask and get up.
