Not officially confirmed but workers are saying the studio has closed down its doors last Friday.https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:xglig6vyxav74acw6g4jbxiy/post/3lxstj6yzqs2m
>>150162729https://xcancel.com/FortierMorghan/status/1961553893420122307>There is no news about this. No announcements. But Nelvana closed its doors today. My dad worked there. It was, to a great extent, the playground I grew up in. It breaks my heart where the industry is going. This company deserved better announcement around this. Better celebration of its contribution to the Canadian entertainment system. But just…. nothing."https://xcancel.com/DevenOClock/status/1962653456696492519>With 54 years of history yet no major fanfare, Nelvana Ltd. closed its doors this past week.>Some know this animation studio for their work on Rock & Rule, Star Wars Holiday Special, Droids and Ewoks. I knew them for incredible 90s shows that captured my imagination as a child."https://xcancel.com/jenbrained/status/1962271439916011568>Closed its doors on Friday. One of Canadas oldest and most prolific animation studios, produced hundreds of works, just gone in a snap. Canadian media is in a real crisis and it's gonna get worse"
>>150162729were they even still alive? I swear I haven't seen anything new of them in years
>>150162729Man, this is rough.
>>150162729I'll always remember it as the reason Nickelodeon missed out on the best the fairly oddparents seasons outside of the US
Why is western animation dying off this hard?
>>150162950No one really watching is my guess.
>>150162743>I swear I haven't seen anything new of them in yearsThey probably made a few preschool shows
>>150162729Why didn't they just make Anime?
>>150163180They couldn't do the things that make anime popular (over-the-top violence and degeneracy)
>>150162739>Canadian media is in a real crisis and it's gonna get worseI'm sure giving work permits to another two million Indians will fix everything. Elbows up!
>>150162739Not looking good for Ubisoft because they got free gibs from Canada.

>>150162729>adobe trash rig slop factory finally gets shut downlmao based
Rollie Pollie Olie, Redwall, Sam and Max, Babar, Seven Little Monsters, Franklin, Little Bear... So many shows of my adolescence and childhood, gone, just like my memories...
>>150163180They did
>>150163323>>150163330They're redirecting all the media funds to housing projects, aren't they...Honestly this is just a sign that our industry should have privatized years, maybe even decades ago
>>150162950streaming is a cancer no one has figured out how to operate in it outside of the absolute big hits and youtube is extra unreliable to air stuff
>>150163502Justin Trudeau really fucked up a lot of things huh.
>>150163537Carney's the one doing the redirecting, Justin simply ignored the industry entirely>>150163511In the Soviet Union these conditions were used as justification for an "artistic revolution" among animators, because they realized the governments viewed their works as weapons of rebellion rather than mediums for telling stories
>>150162729>Parent company is hemorrhaging money.>Sold off the ToonBoom animation software to a private equity company.>Kids not watching traditional tv anymore. It was too big for what it did.
>>150163379anon do you think a studio shutting down magically erases all their work from existence
>>150162950Most people only watched because they had nothing better to do, but now we have the internet.
Elbows up!
>>150162729RIP to them. I watched Franklin, Little Bear, Maggie and the Ferocious Beast and Rolie Polie Olie all the time as a little kid.
>>150163537It works out brilliantly for the billionaires. Bring people from the 3rd world, pay them slave wages (which is still good by their standards). Don't care how it negatively impacts the rest of the country country, and if anyone criticizes the direction just call them racist. It's that simple!
>>150163755Nelvana made those? Oh thank fuck, I hated all that shit
>>150163663For me it might as well. All things are being erased, day by day.
>>150162950In Canada it's because 2 companies bought everything and they're a retarded duopoly. In the USA its because the animation studios insist on working in the most expensive place in the country.
>>150162950Because of India.
>>150163511>outside of the absolute big hitsThis happened>>150163672>Most people only watched because they had nothing better to doBecause of this. People watched the second and third rate shit because it was on and they had time to kill. Now in the age of internet and streaming, people are only going to waste their time on someone's A-Game shit and nothing else. No one is going to just watch some low effort shit because it happens to be on any longer. Those days are done.
>>150163980Similar thing happened in the US. Universal, Disney, and Discovery bought up all the little studios and nearly everything is churned out by the big three.
>>150163755don't forget The Adventures of TINTIN and Eek the Cat>>150163950>hating Franklinyou can go count by twos and tie a rope around your neck

>>150163763Give a normal person's take, not the CSIS take
>>150162729To put this into perspective for those unaware, this is massive. It's between this and PBS shutting down for the biggest /co/ thing this year, and it's probably still thisNelvana has worked on literally hundreds of cartoons, many of which were international collaborations, and distributed more.
>>150164048>Liking Franklinwhat are you, two years old? come back in sixteen years.>you can go count by twos and tie a rope around your neckwew good one, tough guy. Mr. franklin lover is one hardcore fella
>>150162950The easy money is gone
>>150164257They needed to adapt to a new audience, honestlyThe studios that are still successful either switched to CGI, more serious stories, or both, and they did neither
>>150162729Damn, RIP. Loved watching Donkey Kong Country, Clone High (season 1), Beetlejuice, and Sam & Max.
>>150162729They helped with Eek the Cat, RIP.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asqNyc8XdmAhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0p5eZkJyog

>>150162729F
RIPThanks for making the best iteration of Pippi
>>150162729Sad. They used to make such comfy shows
>>150162729:( animated the Tintin series
>>150163706I am going to move to America at this point. Canadians are just too retarded to get better, anyone smart enough will have to vote with their feet.
>>150162729So, where's the new place to make cartoons on the cheap in the West? Brazil, Chile? Some central america country?
>>150163379They should have made more shows like Sam and Max
soooo... what about the archives? all production material will be gone on a pyre?i hope someone saves at least some cells....
>>150163502So it would have closed sooner? We subsidize cancon because it can't realistically compete with America dipshit
>>150166430It took you this long to realize that??
>>150166430Come, gain your freedom Canuck. You'll be safe here.
>>150162729Looking at their catalog, and I'm surprised how much of my childhood was comprised by their shows. It fucking blows what is happening to western animation.
>>150166745If you go to their parent company's website, Nelvana is still listed as one of their brands. I point that out because they shuttered a bunch of channels over the same weekend and those have been removed from that list.Odds are the company hasn't been closed, but the production people have been fired. The reality is that this company hasn't had a big hit in a long ass time. They've been coasting off of doing licensing deals for other companies and stuff they made decades ago.Odds are they don't have much of a real archive (beyond tapes of their shows) anymore either. Nelvana used to have its own office in Toronto, but for the last 15 years it's been operated out of the same building its parent company is based out of. When companies move offices, things get junked. I know they were selling off a bunch of cells.
>>150167268It makes it slightly less painful if you accept that it basically died with the 2D medium in theatres, around the mid 2000s. There have been some one-off hits since then, but nothing anywhere near as masterful as what came before
Sad, the anniversary was just a few years agohttps://files.catbox.moe/r7r3it.mp4
>>150167268Guess we're never getting a better quality release of Beetlejuice or anything else they made.
>>150165416Damn smug brat.
>>150162729If you aren't a leaf, it's impossible to understand just how all-encompassing Nelvana was for animation in this country. They had a massive library of shows, many of which were excellent and childhood-defining, across all major networks, and put a ton of effort into their work. Material like the TinTin, Babar, and Pippi Longstocking adaptations were fantastic, as was their take on Redwall. Their original shows like Clone High, My Dad the Rockstar, and Ned's Newt were great, too. Hell, they even did some really good work with Japanese studios on Bakugan and Pecola. And Rock & Rule's a classic!A shame that they, like the entire Canadian entertainment industry, crumbled under the weight of the country's failures (to say nothing of the greater western animation industry's collapse). They'll be missed.
>>150162729>they animated that dumbass Barney reboot for Cartoon NetworkLiterally nothing of value was lost.
>>150162729WTF is happening in Canada? Why is every piece of news coming out of that country about some massive decline?
>>150168061You thought it becoming the 51st state was a joke?No anon, its reality.
>>150168061The entire country has run on "we're not the US!" for decades and has ignored the fact that they're owned by a tiny collection of megacorps who control everything.
>>150168061fun mix of an atrocious government, being overrun by foreigners who don’t give a shit about the place, terrible weather making all of this worse, and a stringent attitude of never changing any of this just to own le americainsthey literally voted in the same party that made life exponentially worse for decades just because their candidate gave some half-hearted lip service towards disliking trumplo and behold the guy was on his knees and sucking trump’s dick within weeks of reelection because the alternative was the entire country going completely bankrupt
>>150168132TDS is a real thing man. Its honestly impressive.
>>150168061remember that Canada is responsible for thishttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Luc8BXz46dk
>>150168162It fucking sucks because the guys who unironically go on about TDS are almost as insufferable quite often but after living in this shithole for so long I can’t help but think they’re way more rightI just hate to agree with them because they can be so obnoxious about it sometimes
>>150167268they also did Oswald, Busy World of Richard Scarry, Eek the Cat, Fairly Oddparents, season 1 of Clone High, Pelswick, Quads, Donkey Kong Country and even their dub of Beyblade
Annexing Canada is inevitable, face it leafs
>>150168202Oswald was animated through Hit Entertainment.Richard Scarry was animated by Cinar, which then rebranded to Cookie Jar before being bought out by DHX, which rebranded as WildBrain. Also, FOP wasn't animated by Nelvana, but they did own the international distribution rights for the show's first five seasons, which is why it aired on non-Nickelodeon channels like Disney Channel or Jetix in foreign countries.
>>150168172wtf?
>>150168246i've accepted its the only way at this point.
>>150168172i am traumatized
>>150168452We can gain seven or eight states out of it.
>>150168074Nah not fast enough
Can't believe nobody's mentioned them animating Magic School Bus. Lot of shit I grew up on they made, they will be missed, RIP.
>>150168074>>150168246>>150168452>>150168461>>150168487Making Canada the 51st state would be like giving California an extra set of electoral votes. You don't want that, Burgerbros.
>>150162729>>150162950Among many factors, and this is my own assumption, is that no one assumed that his identity-based ideological stance would have consequences; unfortunately, for Canada, it was under the reign of Trudeau.

Nelvana also did care bears for a period from the mid 80s to the late 90s. thats the version I like the best. all the newer reboots suck dicks
>>150167950That sucks. I got pretty good critique from a Nelvana animator when I went up to Ottawa.
>>150169417my friends animation teacher used to work at Nelvana, very nice lady he tells me. said friend of mine went to a job fair in Toronto last year and noticed Nelvana had nothing open so the writing was on the wall. that said it does make one wonder what will become of its library or is Corus gonna hold onto that? at this rate i won't be surprised if Rogers or Quebecor media try to buy them.
>>150162729Not a single reputable news source has covered this story yet. Kind of embarrassing.
>>150168175It's one thing to dislike Trump (I don't like him either), but when you make it a core part of yourself to constantly talk about him, even when a discussion doesn't go near anything related to him, just fucking stop.
>>150168074>>150168692Shouldn't that be the 51st-60th states since Canada has 10 provinces of its own? Plus, that still gives us a nice round number

>>150168132PP is one of the most incompetent politicians I've seen in my life. If Harper ran again I'd vote for him. It says alot when Carney accomplished most of what PP set out to do within his first month as premier as a liberal. He should've said Canada has a immigration problem instead of making his awful campaign about pipelines and the carbon tax, no one gives a FUCK about pipelines nowadays. Maxime Bernier should've ran as conservative candidate, he looks like he actually has testosterone in his body.
>>150162729F.Need to go through wikipedia to see just how many of their shows and collabs I watched growing up.
the issue is that western animation is both refusing to adapt to what modern kids want (non episodic formula stories that tell a grade epic tale like anime) and also being full political brainrot.it's no wonder anime and video games are still thriving while western animation is dying.limbus company alone mogs 90% of all modern western series/shows
>>150162729As someone born in 1997, I've really noticed how a third of the cartoons I watched during childhood was produced by them. It's kind of sad to see them go. Rock & Rule, The Devil & Daniel Mouse, Beetlejuice, Sam & Max, Cyberchase, and The Backyardigans really held up so well.
>>150173414like i remember as a 8 year old kid in 2003 finding anime like dragonball much more cooler because it tried to tell one giant story with stakes and had as the kids would call "hype and aura moments"

Just give up lol.
>>150162950People will say politics, but realistically North American animation is way too kid centric and the projects that aren't movies tend to be low effort and low quality. It was pretty much doomed when anime became mainstream in the states and kids started to spend their time doing other things instead.
>>150173818This time for Canada it literally is about politics. Canada is literally killing itself to try and prove some stupid points with being politically correct while everyone here cheers on the sinking ship. It feels like post WW2 Germany with how depressed, poor and mentally unstable everyone is.
>>150162729Sad, and unfortunately, I don't think Canadian animation has had much significant influence in over the past 15 years. A lot of the memorable Canadian shows were produced from 20 years ago.
FI watched Rock and Rule in honor of them and it mogs Disney's entire 80s output
>>150173865I'm canadian and I don't get they vibe at all but then I live in the sticks (which is most of canada)I feel sorry for the city slickers.
>>150173492>despite steven universe being a successIdk man. I think it was just prominent on the creepy parts of the internet, like tumblr and 4chan. The toys tanked, so I think kids didn't actually care for it.
