It genuinely bothers me how every character who uses mind control is an uncreative moron who only uses it to get attack minions or a date.
What are some actual creative uses for this power or examples of characters using it intelligently
>>
>>150169405
Purple Mam uses it to make his life hyper easy mode
>>
Just shutting people down is pretty useful. Messing with peoples feelings, memories, maybe even abilities also come to mind.

if I had it i'd make you beat up the Arab guy who stole my gf, then i'd make you ask out my gf and raise a loving, happy family together

Which 90% of the time is just making people fight for him or love him. Which was basically OP’s complaint

Her plan was stupid from the beginning. She had them under mindcontrol just to do house chores. She's an old cunt who despises the younger girls but has enough power to brainwash them. Revolta is literally the image of every single feminist cunt in existence.

I plan to write a villain who intends to rewrite the world around him in his ideal image, one machine-assisted mind raping at a time. Not sure how often plots like that have been done.
>>
>>150169426
>>150169552
He only has people fight for him when other jackoffs try to stop him that he can't just mind control himself.

Purple man is legitimately using his mind control powers correctly. I don't know what the fuck OP is on about with "intelligently" using mind control. Its literally always evil to use, so you can't be a "good" guy with it, and doing some crazy "rule the world" villainy doesn't get you any more comfortable than just asking people for what you want and taking it. It only gets you targeted by the very few entities in the world immune to your powers.

Most common use outside those two is robbery. Does that also fall under non-creative?
Also are we counting hypnotism, because that tends to get a little more complicated.

Glorious Godfrey, Amazing Grace and Hatemonger III are propagandists.
Universo used his hypnosis abilities to set convoluted traps in his first appearance.

Mind controlling yourself to remove your own limiters. A guy in Hunter Hunter uses something akin to this to make himself basically go super saiyan
>>
I would read a story where an uneducated urban youth gains mind control and telepathy, learns exactly how he is being controlled at every point in his life, then flips it around and uses this new knowledge to become unethically wealthy and powerful. Maybe it could be, like, allegorical, or something, man
>>
>>150169905
Pretty much, even if you use them for "good" (i.e. imposing your will on world leaders, for example, forcing them to be peaceful or be less attached to the elites' money), you'll just become a target and die via sniper or car bomb or something

Dunno, but my main complaint with mind control is that there's NEVER any rules for it.
>who they can control
>how difficult it is to break free
>if it's possible to break free at all
>the method of how people get put under control
>limits on how many people can be controlled at once
>how long the control lasts
>how much access the villain has to the hypnotized character's powers
>if the controlled person's mind can be read too
>drawbacks
>if the hypnotizing villain is able to still be a competent fighter while controlling someone else
>if the victim's struggling affects the villain at all
>how visible the hypnosis is and how easy it is to tell if someone's controlled
Every piece of media with mind control varies on all of these, often within their own franchise, like having some villain control people for millennia with no issue but then WHOOPS the hero breaks free no issue after remembering their friends, shit like that.
Or there's the shit where those who are controlled don't actually show any signs of being controlled, so then the writers can pull shit out of their ass two seasons in and be like "oh yeah, they've been working for the villain the whole time! See how they smirked a bit oddly in episode 3? That was our hint! Everything went according to the villain's plan! Better pay more attention next time!" and you're just supposed to take that.

Really I just dislike writing tropes that give the writers free reign to do anything they want at any point with no thought put into it and no rules.
Like villains that are super-duper-mega rich/influential who end up having characters secretly be working for them the whole time wink wink wink because off-screen their family was taken at some point by someone they knew for years (who actually works for the villain), or the entire police force is working for the villain because ??? money ???
>>
>>150169405
Using it to attack your enemies with their friends
>>
>>150178926
There's obviously going to variance in abilities between villains but I get you on inconsistency with a specific villain. A lot of it is just sloppiness with character bibles.
Really good mind control shouldn't leave outward signs but again you're right about it being a copout deus ex machina in most cases. (unless it was planned but sufficiently stupid writing is indistinguishable from clever writing)

I want to see a mind control villain who turns somebody's life into a Shining-like surreal nightmare.
Making them see weird things that aren't there, making them question what's actually real and what's not. Maybe start with something simple like convincing a person they have a non-existent illness and slowly progressing with more outlandish and fantastical stuff like hearing voices in the hallway or seeing strange figures in your apartment. Make it last for days or weeks for the villain's amusement.
Basically methodically and deliberately destroying somebody's sanity.

Fantomex creates scenarios in people's heads that help Fantomex escape tough situations. Uncanny X-Force

>it bothers me how every character who uses mind control is an uncreative moron
maybe look for characters who are psychically resistant who cannot be mind controlled. maybe those characters would be more interested or compelling to you. example: nate grey regularly had difficulty trying to find dark beast when they escaped from Age of Apocalypse to the main timeline, and Dark Beast could navigate more easily than the other dark x-men through norman osborn's mind
>>
>>150169405
>characters using it intelligently

That's the problem, actually. Realistic, intelligent use of mind control would never be detected, suspected, or found out, because the user would never be anywhere near who they're controlling, much less make them do something to tie them directly back to the controller or make others suspect something supernatural. They'd never be caught.
>>
>>150169405
Get money, get transportation, get food, use it on a mirror to hypnotize yourself into never feeling fear or weakness again
>>
>>150195676
X-Files did it best.
A mind-controller villain of the week would've never been caught if he didn't intentionally lead authorities to him because he was seeking attention and glory for being such a genius criminal + at that point he was dying of a tumor which was giving him his powers in the first place, so he probably didn't give a fuck.
Literally the only reason he got caught in the first place is because he wanted to.
>>
>>150169405
Why does it bother you this much?

>>150193651
There's a certain point at which illusion power on it's own might as well be mind control. Mastermind was gaslighting the hell out of jean going into the Dark Phoenix saga.

That'd be some amazing horror to set up. "I let myself get caught because I'm dead anyways. You have no idea how much of the world I've affected, and you never will. Worse, there's other out there like me, and you will NEVER EVER KNOW. Bye!"
>>

>m-muh schizo
No arguments, then. Wouldn't expect much from your kind anyway.
>>
>>150198512
Honestly, illusion and memory manipulation makes for a lot more entertaining and horrifying power than "pure" mind control and has a lot more potential for visual storytelling and suspense than "hurr hurt yourself" bland Purple Man-tier slop.
>>
>>150169405
Discord mind-controlled the bearers of the Elements of Harmony into being corrupt and unable to wield their elements. If he simply killed them the EoH could've just found new bearers so that was pretty clever.

Read Kevin Smith's arc on Daredevil (Guardian Devil)
/co/ likes to shit on it, and it is pretty derivative of Born Again, plus Smith became a huge hack later, but I think it's still an alright story and it sort of has what you're looking for (but it's not really mind control)
>>
>>150169405
Always had a plan if I ever had mind control powers

1. Live in a large apartment complex
2. Every time a new person moves in I find some excuse for them to come to my room (they have some mail oackage of mine, I got some check of theirs, etc)
3. Have a landline phone in eyesight of the doorway, and while they're at my door I see how hard I have to mentally push to make them think the phone is ringing
4. If it was a lot of work I manipulate things to be unplesant for them so they leave the apartment.
If it was easy, they stay as another weak willed person I can easily manipulate
5. Live the easylife with all my expenses paid from all the tenants sending me money (they mindcontrol think I'm some utility bill) and have an army whenever needed.

NTA but sometimes when you see a power or idea being used it strikes you that the people who wrote it left out a lot. People see a show or book or what have you with some idea, and then using their heads and spare time they think of some of the legitimate applications or implications of that idea, and then they realize that none of those more thoughtful parts of the idea ever, ever, ever get put to use in mainstream media. This inevitably leads to mild consternation among us manchild nerds and a version of this can also be extended to shit like shipping, basic plot structures, tools and abilities, etc. Hypotheticals about this kind of thing also are what lead into powerscaling bullshit.
>>
>>150169405
Tame the rich. Pool resources. Restart the space race. Colonies on the moon, modern health care, etc. Because the people in charge are stupid and need to replace their enablers.
>>
>>150195676
How would that work?
>have mind control powers
>decide to use them for the first time on a person nearby you
Boom, you're already in the vicinity of that person. Your post implies the person has been doing mind control for a while and has built up some complicated chain of command. You can easily get around that by having them only be starting out, or, better yet, limit the range at which their powers work.
>>
>>150198762
I'll approach this from a slightly different angle.
For me it's less "how to use a power in a smart way" (though some of it is in place too because mind control villains are generally very stupid), and more of "how to use a power in a genuinely disturbing way".
Since I like horror and capeshit, it's a natural leap to make that I like to see superpowers and villains who have them being horrifying. Which is a major reason why Jessica Jones series was such a massive letdown for me despite everybody sucking its dick.
>>
>>150198902
What didn't you like about it? I'm curious.
>>
>>150198769
Make a difference whether it's active or passive, contact/device based or with a time limit too.
>>
>>150198950
Aside from the plot relying heavily on everybody in the cast being retarded or plot conveniences and every character being too obnoxious to care about? (Which doesn't surprise me because the show was made by a Dexter writer and Dexter was already stupid garbage for midwits.)
The main villain was the biggest disappointment. Gotta be the stupidest, least threatening villain I've seen in a long time. I've expected somebody much smarter and much more calculating than a spergy manchild. That's not helped by Tennant's goofy acting and really pathetic personality (doesn't help that the show keeps humiliating and weakening him every chance it gets to make him even less intimidating).
And in terms of powers, they were used in very dull, very uninteresting ways. One would expect a superpowered sadist to come up with something more interesting and disturbing than bogstandard mutilations and suicides for his victims, but I guess not.
>>
>>150198738
Mysterio being a genuine threat is always welcome, so I forgive that story a lot of shortcomings.
>>
The smartest option of staying below radar is to become a small community cult leader.
These people fill do anything for you and how could anybody tell these people are mind-controlled and not standard cultists anyway?
As long as you don't attack train stations with sarin gas or fuck children, you should be fine and completely unnoticed by everybody.
