as a zoomer, its interesting when media from the 80s, 90s, even early 00s has high school students in distinct cliques like jocks, nerds, cheerleaders, burnouts, etc. in my highschool years (2010s) we didn't really have anything defined like that. there were plenty of athletes in my AP courses (many had better grades than me, in fact) and some of the nerdier people I knew had athletic hobbies. of course, friend groups did tend to share similar interests but it didn't feel very cliquey, at least to me. but something interesting about Daria is that there isn't much bullying at Lawndale high compared to other fictional high schools from that period of time. it's closer to my personal experience than something like mean girls.
