Are shitty artists the only ones who can succeed these days?
>2 comics from 10 years ago totally make a trend, guys!
>>150174520It certainly helps. The editors at scholastic like "naive" art(read:simple, childish). Source; they told me as much.
>>150174520Do you have the slightest idea how many books like Dog Man and DOAWK exist yet don't get as much as success as those two?
>>150174539Not him and OP is incorrect but you have zero fucking idea how many animal comics for kids popped up in the wake of Dog Man's success or prose/graphic novels made in the same style as Diary of a Wimpy Kid to the extent where older characters like Big Nate and G-Man tried it out as wellI largely think a key contributor to their success is that both Pilkey and Kinney just crank out a new book once a year so the momentum never dried up
>>150174520>been catching up the wimpy kid books just because>last one i read was big shot>look and see there have been 4 more since thenHow can Jeff keep pumping shit out?
>>150174520Two thoughts about this, particularly for books based around visuals:1) "simpler" art styles are likely more appealing to kid audiences, since its easier for kids to replicate themselves2) it's easier to have a high rate of output when your rendering style can be done on the quick and plays into imperfections
>>150174520Dav Pilkey isn't shitty, he has older work that illustrate it, he's drawing his recent stuff to appeal to young readers, keeping things visually simple for simple stories. No comment on the other matter.
>>150174634They're just really easy to make and sell gangbusters with new animated media being releasedI know people will say the series went on too long but apparently kids still like it
>>150174539/thread
>>150174520Raina Telgemeier is one of Scholastic's other big evergreen money raking darling and she's a genuinely great artist
>>150174687last stuff I remember from her were her GN adaptations of the Babysitters Club, and since then there have been a bunch more artists afterward
>>150174634People ask the same about how superheroes can keep going forever and the answer is the same, there's always going to be kids who pick it up for the first time and read it anywaysIt's like a sitcom in book form
I think one reason for "shitty" art is that kids like something they know they can copy and draw easily It was the logic for Kirby and Sonic's designs, not calling them shitty but they wanted something kids would like drawing
>>150174711Dude, that stuff was from early in her career in 2006 (recolor came out in 2015 where the series continued past where her four book contract left off at)She got huge starting with Smile which came out in 2010 and recently released a book collaborating with Scott McCloud
>>150174676>>150174539Take it from someone who perused through kid lit publishersThe four most successful and influential books for the kid lit graphic novel market are>Smile>Dog Man>Diary of a Wimpy Kid>The Baby-Sitters ClubWhich essentially influenced the four dominant types of books in that market>Relatable slice of life, usually with coming of age themes>Animal comedy>"Diary format" combination of prose and illustration >Adaptation of older, traditional kid lit novels
>>150174711She had an exhibit recently and a book is coming out next month about said exhibit
>>150174520>Shitty artist>Dav and JeffIt's called an Artstyle and they are great at it. Their art conveys exactly what the story wants, is expressive and unique, and works perfectly for both series.Bad art isn't "woooah scribbly lines LMAOOOOO!" It's trash anatomy, terrible perspective, awful designs, etc etc.I'm not going to roast you OP, you're most likely young or baiting. If the former learn to have a good eye for what differentiates good and bad art.
>>150174833That's one sexy girl
>>150175452Anon....Smile's a memoirThat's supposed to be Raina herself as a kid
>>150175468HOT
>>150174588Greg copycats are a dime a dozen. I haven't really seen anything.blatantly emulating Dog Man.
>>150175915InvestiGators, Officer Clawsome, Agent Moose, Max Meow, etc They're not 1:1 trying to emulate Dogman but the increase of animal hero comics for kids is pretty obviously coming from Pilkey's success especially when they're explicitly advertised for fans of Dog Man
>>150174520these are SOVL
>>150174634>>150174724The thing with Wimpy Kid is that after a certain point it turned into some kind of comic book Simpsons.
>>150174520They're still making Wimpy Kid books? They're still making Wimpy Kid MOVIES?
>>150176684They stopped making them in live action and they're straight to streaming now
>>150174520>that art >"shitty"
>>150175452You have a fucking wife Walt
>>150174711Telgemeier's Baby-Sitters Club run is actually how I first found out about her
>>150174520The thing about children's literature is once an artist gets "good" they always end up making boring sci fi action adventure shit with too much lore and too many characters and not enough fun energy."Serious literature for BOYS" always features a front cover starring 5 tweens wearing power suits and crossing their arms. No boy wants to read this, they want to read stupid but funny shit like DogMan that's easy to follow, or if they REALLY want something "cool and serious" they're skipping all the western books and walking straight to the manga section. At least manga will actually have some blood, hell maybe even boobs. Things that boys actually like.
>>150177812>The thing about children's literature is once an artist gets "good" they always end up making boring sci fi action adventure shit with too much lore and too many characters and not enough fun energy.Examples?
>>150174520You guys realize kids like these books because its closer to how they can draw right. It makes them feel like theres not such a big difference between them and a published author
>>150176458>>150174634I was a big fan of the old, webcomic version back when it came out, I looked at the modern books and it felt like a completely different thing. The original ones were really grounded and relatable, now all this wacky shit happens and they have a pet pig that stands on 2 legs and wears pants?
>>150178143The pig got droppedWent the way of Sparky
>>150178143
>>150174520No, but they have an advantage. They are like those webcomics.
>>150174520Those are books aimed at kids. They don't have the highest of standards.
>>150178143Wtf... I never got this far in the Wimpy Kid saga
>>150180529The pig was introduced 11 years ago in book number 9.
>>150174520You sound jealous
>>150174520
>>150180734>book number 9 Lol no wonder, I stopped after Cabin Fever I think. What else have I missed? Are Fregley and Chirag still around?
>>150174724I thought it was because the average consumer as well as kids have no frame of reference, standards or expectations expcept for one thing: getting more of the thing they enjoyed previously no matter what form it takes.
>>150182611sociopath squad
>>150184084Nate is alright
>>150174520Does it make any difference that the store in both of these books are intentionally meant to look crappy? Left is supposed to be drawn by a couple of fourth graders while the right is supposed to be half hearted doodles by a sixth grader.
Is the new Goosebumps graphic novel ripped yet?
>>150184084You just reminded me that Peanut exists and now I want to storytime it some dayThe premise baffled me when I first read it in high school and now I want to see how /co/ would react to it (if anyone would show up)
>>150184569He's the worst one
>>150186529I'd show up
>>150186529What is the baffling premise?
>>150186606>"Before you write me off as a delusional psycho, think about what it's like to be thrown into a situation where everyone knows everyone . . . and no one knows you." >Sadie has the perfect plan to snag some friends when she transfers to Plainfield High—pretend to have a peanut allergy. But what happens when you have to hand in that student health form your unsuspecting mom was supposed to fill out? And what if your new friends want to come over and your mom serves them snacks? (Peanut butter sandwich, anyone?) And then there's the bake sale, when your teacher thinks you ate a brownie with peanuts. Graphic coming-of-age novels have huge cross-over potential, and Peanut is sure to appeal to adults and teens alike.

>>150174520Pic unrelated?
>>150177648>A Wrinkle in Time lame ass book
>>150186530He can't be worse than Greg
>>150189473You've clearly never read his books then. Or the original comic strip.
>>150174520It's hard to believe there are actually people in this thread defending crap like Dog Man and Diary of a Wimpy Kid. The reason shit like this and Captain Underpants sells so well isn't because it's "relatable" or "appeals to kids", it's because of predatory marketing tactics where Scholastic Corporation is allowed to run their "Book Fairs" in public schools and shill this crap to a captive audience of children.
>>150191317Book fairs are awesome
