>"Sir, this fat, washed up, balding meathead has been loitering around the office"
>"Perfect, suit him up"

I can sort of get the idea of casting him in some wanna be meta slop as a joke to laugh at him as even in his prime with those rumors it was an awful casting idea, but the fact they're continuing with this role is concerning.

It's because Channing Tatum was planned as Gambit in a scrapped movie years ago, back in his prime.

I sense a lot of unease behind this post. You might need to sit down and calm your nerves, anon.

He was great, and genuinely loved to play him. I'll take an actor who care about the role over some meat puppet like a Gal Gadot or a Dwayne Johnson collecting a check any day.
>>
While part of it is just them trying salvage the Gambit movie that never was, Gambit is supposed to be 30 something anyway, he's not a young twink, in flashbacks a decade prior he'd already been in the thieves guild for several years at that point. Most mainstream Superheroes that started back in the day, unless they're specifically teen heroes are usually fairly old compared to modern day standards, so casting middle aged people to play them isn't that jarring.

I wonder if this is a generational disconnect because it seems obvious to me that Gambit is styled after the slimmer early to mid 30s aged action star ala a Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon and we're in an era where action star means either John Wick or Tom Holland

who wants pity sex?
have you no shame?

I know Gambit's main feature is that he's hot, but Channing named the personality, the voice, the attitude, and even the athletic. Some people want a hot dude who doesn't give a shit about the character instead.
Like, I've seen "female comic fans" saying that he didn't look the part, but wanted a black guy to play him.

>he's not a young twink
You've be surprised by the amount of "Marvel fans" who think otherwise. They can't really acknowledge that Gambit is around early 30s and acts like a man his age. Same problem as Spiderman happens with most of the X-Men who are already in their 30 or about to. Rogue's close to 30 too and she acts like a teen: "hey, I know I'm married and I somehow should be with my husband, but I rather ditch him to go to Cyclops and still being an X-Man cuz that's all I know". She acts like how Cyclops acted when he was 25 and abandoned his wife and kid. At least Cyclops' excuse was that he was young.

If Maddie wanted her husband to stick around she shouldn't have made him leave with her psychic powers to Essex could experiment on her baby.

Tatum seemed to love it and he was dying to play Gambit for nearly twenty years. I'm glad he got to it. He's supposedly toning down the accent for the upcoming Avengers which is a good. I hope he gets a Rogue. I'd like to see Paquin come back, but she's got too many health issues.

I honestly don't know how you can look at the average Marvel or DC hero that aren't explicitly stated to be teenagers and think they're supposed to be 20 year old prettyboys. Most clearly have chisled weathered lined faces of adult men who are well over 30. It's like people suggesting 18 year old actors to play Batman. Unless the story is specifically him started out (and even then that's usually around age 25) the typical Batman story has him pushing 40 at the youngest, already been in the game for over a decade, and has a teenage son.

Has anime culture become so mainstream the average fan has the mentality that all heroes are teenage or early 20s prettyboys and anyone older than that is a useless old geezer?

Same ones that get surprised when you point out Logan was originally an ugly, hairy manlet?

The mentally ill. We get it, but Gambit is a hardcore mutant thug with a heart of gold. Just as savage as someone like Logan if not more so. Logan is just old enough to feel regret and the loss of a past from traumatic experimentation and feel nothing but an empty pit inside. Gambit has always been hunted for being a freak of nature and needed to be cutthroat in order to survive. Yet still young enough to long for connection and empathize toward those like him.

Exactly. Tatum's fine casting. The only problem was he was too fat, because he didn't have enough heads up to properly prep for the role physique wise.

Due to this movie, I found out most Americans have never interacted with a Cajun.
Which is funny because, as a foreigner, he sounds to me like a classier version of how the average nigga, no matter from which state, sounds.

The same that have some explain us all how everybody was always gay.
>>
>>150193320
Honestly, I like Gambit's in his 30s already. He's more mature and in a better place about himself and his actions. There was a lot of potential for him to do many things, but he's stuck in a marriage that, narratively, gives him nothing.
>>
>>150194914
Good thing is that he's gotten fit for the role. He took a selfie before start filming and he looked fine.
>>
>>150195323
Your 30s really isn't that old..
>>
>>150195838
Maybe a better word is mature. Not even physically, just emotionally more rounded than someone in their 20s.
>>
>>150195945
It's not even about maturity. Gambit (and most heroes of his generation) are in their 30s because they actually had a history and did stuff prior to being heroes that reflects in their stories, something that the typical fresh out of their teens hero can't really have unless they had a ridiculously tragic childhood. Because they were written by people who also lived interesting lives in their youth before becoming writers and it reflected in their stories and not the current crop of writers for...basically anything really who've been in the school circuit their entire life then got hired straight out so they have no real hard life experience to speak of. Just high school drama they remember and have adults act like
>>
>>150195945
Yep, he's more mature emotionally.
Gambit '12 was the last time he was written well by a man instead of some hormonally charged woman who just wanted the character to be available to fuck Rogue. After Rogue, he dated Cecilia, and after that, he just didn't jump into bed with the new female character of the run, because he actually saw her as someone who needed help. You see Gambit as someone who was considering his options and realised he didn't have to remain with the x-men if he didn't want to and could instead get married and lead the guilds. He also made peace with his father and said he was fine with the life he gave him, accepting that he was proposing him as the King of all thieves. What you see later is just people not taking the role seriously because they're unable to right a 30yo man.
>>
>>150196032
The experience they bring is being in school so that's why they keep insisting on bringing more and more teens as well.
>>
>>150195838
It's not that it's old it's that there's a marked difference between a young 20 year old and a late 20/early 30 year old man which is why ancient societies restricted citizenship until you were 30. There's a level of self-assuredness that a 22 year old guy doesn't have, he's looking to prove himself while the 29 year old guy already knows who he is.
