But the simple explanation why it didn't make money until the 50's is because they barely made any copies of the thing originally. It ran in only a handful of theaters, because the film required "Fantasound", which RKO didn't want to pay for, so Disney outright paid for it themselves, knowing full-well that it would be an underperformer. Which was honestly pretty ballsy considering Fantasound is the exact same idea as surround sound, which is a normal format for films now. And they did make a "popular version" of Fantasia, which was a mono edit that had the scenes of the musicians and abstract sequences removed.
