They've invested so much time and effort into their stories, that they feel obligated to see them through to the end even though neither is clearly going nowhere. The plots have spiraled out of control, the characters are unrecognizable, and the overall quality has plummeted. Viv and Goose are not writing for their viewers anymore, they're writing for themselves, trying to justify the time they've already wasted. It's a vicious cycle that will only lead to more frustration. They need to cut their losses and move on.
