I'm a fan of Jax from TADC, but recently I feel every online discussion has people demanding you acknowledge that he's a terrible person. Why? I just find his character interesting. I don't make excuses for him, and I've never faulted Ragatha or Gangle.

If he was real, I'd hate him, but this is a work of fiction, which means I can examine their personalities, and emotionally invest myself in them without the risk of real-world harm.

I'd thought this was some dumb zoomer fandom drama, as is often the case. But now even Gooseworx is making tweets about how "some of you make too many excuses for his behavior". It feels like moral policing.

Like, imagine if people talked about the Sopranos this way. Every time you feel bad for him someone reminds you that he's a murderer and a sociopath, as if you're "making an excuse".
Is this one of those "vocal minority" things? I just wanna be sure it's not just me who feels this way.

I think you're just taking her too seriously. You clearly know Jax sucks, so I don't see why you feel you're being policed when they're talking about people who try to "woobify" Jax saying he did nothing wrong.

This is a weird phenomenon I've also picked up on. I think there's two types of people in this world. Theres people who view cartoons through a "heightened reality" lense ie: Homer strangling Bart is funny because we can all relate to an big oafish authority figure who is quick to anger VS people who take cartoons at face value ie:Homer is literally strangling his 8 year old son, this is child abuse and unfunny. I feel like group 2 used to be like middle aged women up until recently but...I dunno man.

What am I missing from Bluesky Gooseworx? Didn't even realize she made an account there

There ARE some Jax fans who act as apologists for him and act like he's some poor misunderstood angel. Not as an interesting "what if" scenario, but treating his CANON self that way.

I probably am. It’s a bad habit of mine, whenever I feel strongly about an opinion, but then see so many others oppose it, I get antsy and try looking for anyone who agrees with me.

I guess I feel targeted because I feel like I’m “catching strays”. A lot of it is in opposition to Ragatha hate; I’ve seen maybe four or five different Youtube videos claiming people are unfairly harsh to Ragatha in comparison to Jax, saying it’s because of misogyny.

It’s like, man, I don’t wanna be a misogynist. I don’t think I am one? But now I’ve got that fear. Then people are saying Jax is Gangle’s abuser and Gangle is a victim. Now I feel like some accomplice or something.

I think this is where my fear comes from. If there’s people who see him as “harmless”, they’re being foolish. But I’ve personally rarely seen that, if at all. Maybe I just got lucky?

I do see people mentioning that he’s traumatized, scared, that he doesn’t want to be bad, feeling sorry for him. I agree with all of those, but I also feel great disdain for his violence and evilness at the same time.

People think it’s one or the other, or that it’s some competition of “who’s more justified”. It doesn’t have to be a competition. He can be “traumatized” and still harm others.

I feel like in the last decade there’s been some online obsession with “redeeming bad guys”; who can/can’t be redeemed, who does/doesn’t deserve redemption. And from there, the misconception that “having a sad backstory” implies that a character deserves redemption.

It’s like, I don’t care if Jax is ever “redeemed” or not. This isn’t Naruto or Steven Universe, the show could go a completely different direction with its plot.

It's probably because a number of those same people excusing Jax's actions are also trashing Ragatha and acting like she's the worst person ever
