What were they thinking?

This was Marvel on the verge of going full MCU synergy but not quite there yet. Still some mutants but only the Wolverines. They wanted to diversify their heroes and toss in as many lesser known characters as possible. Problem is that they barely tried with a lot of them.

Looking back it’s hilarious that both the comics and the MCU made the mistake of getting too cocky and sidelining all the characters people cared about to force diversity

>Sam as Captain America
>Jane as Thor
>Inhumans push
>Laura as Wolverine
>the black girl as Iron Man
>pregnant Spiderwoman
>Old Man Wolverine is hanging around the main timeline for some reason
>Champions and the OG X-Men
>"Ask me about my feminist agenda"
>Scott Summers is literally Hitler (but we won't tell you what he did) (also, he's dead)
>Bendis
>Coulson and Nick Fury Jr
>FF being MIA for a long time
At least Robb was a cool new Ghost Rider

makes you wonder if this was the setup for the MCU

All of that on the hopes of getting MCU casuals to buy comics (spoiler: didn't work)
