The Disney acting in the newer seasons is lame, since NuSimpsons has a higher budget they should just animate like this.
>>

I miss both that and how dynamic/cinematic both the lighting and camera angles could be. There were moments where it could feel like an actual animated movie, even if it only lasted a few seconds. The zoom-out before Homer strangles Burns in part 1 of Who Shot Mr. Burns always stood out to me as combining all three of those elements.

They lost their (slave)cheap labor and things got too costly to make anymore, it's why the new KotH isn't as well made too.

That's where all the issues hit, for about 30ish year the global world had a functioning under class they could feed peanuts and get spectacular results.
>>
>>150230048
They can't *just* animate like that. The show only exists to make profit for Disney, so it will never have good animation again. Good animation doesn't come from nowhere. Give credit to David Silverman for his work

I thought that most of the better-animated bits from the Simpsons were actually animated in-house.
>>
>>150230070
Comparing the Bartman and Deep Deep Trouble music videos to that shitty Disney Plus musical video is a visual night and day difference.
>>
>>150230048
It seems to be a problem for adult-animated longrunners in general to become less cartoony/stylized over the years and lean more into realism
>>
>>150230092
The Simpsons doesn't have a low budget these days like other shows, far from it in fact, it has a high budget these days cause of how profitable it is, the animation was stiff as fuck for like most of the show but then when Disney bought them they started including Disney acting in the episodes, no other show includes Disney acting, it's the same reason NuSB is the only show with Ren & Stimpy animation, and these longrunners are still animated by Rough Draft Korea unlike most newer shows. They aren't giving those kinds of budgets to stuff like NuKOTH cause companies are too afraid to take risks these days.

These kinds of shots just won't look as charming with the newer seasons realistic backgrounds

Matt Groening wants everything on-model. Executives want everything on-model. They don't care about expression or good animation. They just want to save money.

I'll always dream of a timeline where Sam Simon had more say in how The Simpsons would transition from shorts to series...

13 seconds of pure, quality animation that took them hundreds, thousands maybe, of pages to do.
>>
>>150231155
In the earlier seasons Groening wanted pushed expressions and cartoony movements to be at the absolute minimum, there's a good video going over this called the Simpsons "no no sheets" or something like that. The older seasons looked far more visually appealing, but I guess even the occasional expressions were too much.

Simpsonsuga

Some Enchanted Evening was originally gonna be the first Simpsons episode to air but it was delayed because what the overseas studio sent over was deemed too cartoony by Groening, this one scene is the only smoothly animated remnant of the original version.

The Simpsons was a fucking mistake cause it paved the way for shows like Phineas & Ferb and Gravity Falls that have zero wacky expressions or cartoony movements.

I know that sakugabooru has a “western” tag but I’m surprised that there’s no western equivalent to the site in general
>>
>>150230129
that is still mostly the case, it's the same on Family Guy as well. if you saw good hand drawn animation on Simpsons, it was usually David Silverman. he was animating the characters with Brad Bird, Bill Kopp, Wes Archer (correct me if im wrong, this is from memory) and some others when it was on the Tracy Ullman show

Most of that budget goes to paying off the voice actors' absurd salaries, not the actual production.

>this looks too good and we've already had it animated sooo we want you to redo it to look shit
Unfortunately the do over is still high quality compared to season 5 onward Simpsons.
I like how the lipstick on the door is still in the final version.
>>
>>150230373
Something I've found interesting
The 60s Hanna-Barbera shows or some of the Terrytoons were made on a quarter of the budget of even NuKOTH, but they have much more entertaining and appealing poses, expressions, etc
NuKOTH might be a bad example as it wasn't intended to be a cartoony show, so maybe Simps or FG are better examples
FG looks cheap and stiff as hell but I would personally blame the boarders and layout artists over the Korean slaves for not pushing for better poses in the production phase

>>150237613
Well they cheated quite a bit by heavily reusing old animations. It's like how in Scooby Doo, whenever there was a running sequence, they ALWAYS reused the same animations. Every HB show had heavily recycled animations and backgrounds. This is why they were occasionally able to use slightly more dynamic animations and shit. They saved so much time and money via recycling old shit that they were sometimes able to do slightly interesting things as well. And then if the opportunity came up, they'd reuse that too.
>>
>>150237613
>>150237824
HB was run by people as smart as they were cheap.
>>
>>150234148
they've been animated in Korea since 1989

>An adult animated sitcom used to have moments of genuinely impressive animation and real cinematographic principles applied to it
God watching those classic seasons pisses me off now sometimes because it's almost jarring to realize how

The animation isn't even that expressive yet they still manage to have visual appeal in it by good staging and colors, you don't see that shit in the newer seasons

I did NOT appreciate the level of artistry that went into some of these scenes as a kid, holy shit.

It feels like a recent thing. I know people posted the webm comparing Marge in the classic and HD opening, but the writing was the first and foremost thing people criticize when it comes to pointing out the decline. Nowadays, it feels like people are pointing out the effort and quality of of the animation compared to the HD and Disney+ seasons.

Again going back to the importance of good expressions and posing over fluid animation>>150237613
I always liked this shot in Black Widower, suppose it's a little out of character for Sideshow Bob but it's funny
They stopped doing these funny expressions around maybe the Oakley era? Maybe earlier? Correct me if I'm wrong
The episodes were still funny for a couple more seasons but it started to feel like they were "too good to be a cartoon"

I will say, HD Zombie Simpsons is probably the best animated show of its' kind right now

Of course I'm damning it with faint praise considering its' competition is shows where the only animation is the characters moving their arms while talking

Just like how HD Zombie SpongeBob is the best-looking kids show on tv right now

It's the longrunners that get the special treatment
