It is no surprise that power creep is a thing in comicbooks, but how do you feel about them? Look at the Hulk for example. His original story was a guy who got hit with a gamma bomb and became a monster that get stronger when mad, simple enough. Now, he's the avatar of the evil version of the god of the Marvel universe and he wants to destroy the universe itself and he can't die...what? Do you believe that moments like those take away from the character of what they original were? Almost like a fan who got a job at their favorite studio and decided to make a their favorite character unbeatable and ignore what make them so special or do you believe it's writers trying to bring in newer fans with new origins?
>>150239310Small power creep is ok especially since in general (marvel)comics has been power crept. Regardless of the amount it works best when there is a good explanation for the increase. Pic related is probably the worst example in years. Not only did come out of nowhere, not only is an absurd leap in power, the only explanation is that Storm has just holding back all this time because she was afraid of hurting people.
>>150239310see also Venom, the symbiotie, and all the knull lore
Lets just admit Marvel comic writing is just fucking ass. Multiple street level heroes are now either major world ending threats, have the power of heaven/hell, or are a farcry from beating up muggers in dark alley
>>150239310>>150239547Not directly a power level things overly grandiose shit like The one below all, Knull, or spider totems being added to an otherwise fairly grounded character is needless at best and damaging at worse. Even venom as alien parasite is a more grounded than the King in black ultra god that acts as an opposing force the TOAA or whatever the fuck Ewing did in that book.
Not even power scaling it’s like garbage marvel writing. Cyclops rays from his eyes are apparently from a realm of constant energy
I hate retards that have no knowledge of a character acting like they have shit to say about it. Hulk has been magic related for over 50 years the last decade has just decided to explain why we get shit like Hulk being able to see/talk to ghosts as Gamma being partially magic.
>>150239310All power creep comes from marketing. its at the core of all shitty crossover events, new powers fake deaths and transformations.
>>150239926Yeah but there's ways to explain the magic in Hulk without inventing shitty convulated lore
>>150239926But why does the god of Marve have to be the reason?
>>150239513>calls herself a goddess but mutants are still oppressed Can someone make sense of this to me?
>>150240692Erm all marvel humans have a gene to hate mutants unconditionally
>>150239513>All those innocent people storm let die because apparently the notch between city level and galaxy buster is paper thinThere was also the claim that she is blood related to Oshtur but that has no bases in history and only became a thing in this book. Plus considering Abstracts are generally way more power than elder gods that's like saying "Mike Tyson is my grandfather I there I can beat up an african elephant".
>>150239513Storm is a good example of why the whole 'omega' level mutie thing is retarded. First it was 'oh these are the strongest individuals with this specific power'. Now it's 'these beings have no limits and are basically as strong as they want to be'. The stronger you make them with this premise, the less sense it all makes, and their motivations become less clear.
>>150241387Not that it'll matter for Storm because by the end of the arc, she'll give up all her power and go back to slumming with the X-Men because "they are my reason to live". Like, come ON, woman, have some personal desires for once in your life.
>>150239310I don't mind stuff like Superman going from being able to lift a building to being able to lift a solar system. What I do mind is shit like what OP described where a character's entire fundamental nature is redefined because some hack writer couldn't just make a new character.
What's a good example of power creep?
>>150241926Depending on how the story goes. Some times you get good stories where the boost is justified, but other times, you get shit like this: >>150239513
>>150241926Nova prime. Rich gets a big power boost when all the other novas die because he is housing the the entire nova force. Still needs to world mind to use it and looses it when he looses the world mind.
>>150239310It's because writers get so butt hurt that pre established cosmic level god characters out strip their fav heroes. What's superman basic cape powers to the martian manhunters or Amazon, what can the strongest there is do to a ancient divine god of thunder, fighting and even strength. The only awnser to power scale these simple concepts to over the top realms of near narrative breaking progress. Superman has absorbed the sun so thoroughly, he can unlock a dormant power that puts him at a state that makes him the meta physical embodiment of hope and power and adaptive to being more unprecedented in using his abilities. THE Hulk has a physical limit breaker in him the more he evolves into different personas, he has touched on every realm of power scaling to the point he fits the highest power naturally, the one above all, and links to his dark and most powerful aspect, the one below all. Hulk will now have unlimited power states and the green door to access any strength level to out perform anyone and any thing.
>>150239310Powerlevels in comics don't make sense
>>150241926Doctor Doom went from being a guy who goes toe to toe with Daredevil to being the Marvel version of the Emperor of Man
>>150239513That looks like a fan service outfit from the back
>>150241926Most early examples, like making Superman able to fly or making Spider-Mans spider sense actually be more like a early warning type of thing for danger
>>150241926Karnak being able to see non physical flaws. He basically barely got to fight before that because his ability is either I break you or It doesn't work at all. With latter being the usual outcome because he is a supporting character in a D-list franchise. Him being useless even became a plot point. Expanding his abilities let him participate more and act in more strategic ways besides punching shit.
>>150241926Bizarre having frost vision and fire breath
>>150239926>every single miniscule thing must have an explanation or reasonBoy you retards must absolutely love pointless garbage sequels that explain shit no one asked.
>>150245462Lol, that sound fun.
>>150240692Storm is a giant narcissist
>>150239310It would work if consistently linear like dragon ball, but doesn't with lazy hack writers who just reset and retcon whatever they want
>>150241926Plastic Man
>>150239310>Now, he's the avatar of the evil version of the god of the Marvel universe and he wants to destroy the universe itself and he can't die...what?He is not himself the avatar. It's just the explanation for how his power is truly infinite; he gets stronger when he's mad, but how does that happen? There's no limit to anger, why did some radioactivity make this guy infinitely strong? Does the power come from nowhere? Well, some writer decided "No, it comes from Hyper Satan who is infinite". That's also a secondary explanation for what that weird gamma radiation is in the first place: it's basically a specific cursed wavelength that lets Hyper Satan touch you.
>>150239310No
>>150241926Whenever they let a supervillain actually be a major threat to heroes or have some significant moments with how much writers love to sideline and shit on them.
Mutants tend to be really bad at power creep because X-gene leaves little room for alteration. It always feels like just making shit up. Other characters can spin some shit to try and make sense but X-characters have a shared power origin and even when adding new shit writers are rarely allowed to say the power is more than the X-gene. Even all that storm shit her X-gene still gets full credit.
>>150239926I know comics and ultra-longform fiction is allergic to it, but isn't the mystery better than the answer? The gentle giant is haunted by ghosts; why do they choose him?Sure, the answers can be interesting, but only once. Mysteries can hold us forever. There needs to be some things in comics where editorial needs to just say "We can never share the answer. We know what it is, but we won't put it to print."
>>150239310This could be solved easily if cape writers took a note from fantasy writers and understood the "Limitations > Powers" aproach of writing prevents power creep. When was the last you read a story where a superhero can't solve the problem with their own powers?
>>150241926Molecule Man discovering his potential after overcoming his low self-esteem in Secret War was great
bump
>>150241387Mutants as a whole is a retarded concept.
Some times it goes the other way. Eternals have power crept down over time. Ikaris had thor teir strength Sersi and Thena easily matched exodus an "omega level" mutant. They were also immortal and could only be temporarily by complete obliteration. Cut the future they are generally much weaker. AXE. had them dying to shit like being stabbed because under normal circumstances 99% of mutants don't have the means to kill any eternal.
>>150255318Same as Beyonder.
