>>150258526I definitely think its real, maybe its not "the real world" but the place they're in is physical and the characters (besides claire and chloe) are sentient. They represent things about the "core person" that the story focuses on (im partial to the idea that chloe and claire are this same person) but they can clearly think and act independently.

Maybe the original person became a reality warper and split in two or something like that, and at somepoint they built and traveled to that place.It seems like the place was actively designed by claire, since new houses sometimes appear out of nowhere when she creates new citizens. But it could also reflect her unconcious as well . we dont know what caused theprevious layers to be abandoned.. I suspect the animals also reflect facets of claire/chloe, even though they are separate people. But I think they were conciously designed since we know that Claire apparently used ares as a prototype for mars.
A (kinda strange) comparison to the situation with Chloe and Claire could be the Yozis from the tabletop game exalted.
