A lot of mecha tropes get done for the very first time in Mazinger, but they were flying blind then. Breaking new ground and figuring it out as they went. So you see them do a bunch of things that you can tell they are just throwing at the wall and it works, and a bunch of stuff that they throw at the wall and its just baffling and weird.
