Those were a lot more in-your-face slapstick and didn't allow for the character depth Tom and Jerry had.

Even Dietch understood this. One of the most famous shorts is Tom trying to court Toots and Jerry doing his best to cockblock Tom. But it seems they keep trying to make Jerry the innocent party. The worst example is the Tom and Jerry Comedy Show (1975). No slapstick plus Tom and Jerry are friends rather than rivals.
