Inter cut with MJ holding a smoking gun. Officers Burst into the apartment to clear.

Harsh fluorescent light. Metal table. MJ sits alone on one side, DETECTIVE ALVAREZ across from her with a case file. DETECTIVE SANTOS observes from the wall, arms crossed.

I think what I find most depressing is that even if they did fix everything, say they had Pete and MJ hook up tomorrow, get married and we all move, it will still be pretty hollow. It will just be a bandaid fix to get us back where we were, but it won't be threw the same memorable milestones, it won't have the same great impacts, it will just be forever cracked and broken. At this point I think retconning it wouldn't be too big of an issue. Marvel's universe and the continuity is so fucked and everything is divorced from each other that Spider-Man being put through a prolonged arc/arcs that do abridged or remixed versions of post-OMD stories, or completely new stories until they reach the modern day wouldn't be too bad with me. If they do that then they could retcon Civil War and other shit. I know that happened before OMD but Marvel just needs their comics razed and brought back to square one. But OMD being undone specifically just needs to recontexualize each post-OMD event by introducing new stories that show how those stories changed and/or were prevented.
Like the Rebirth gimmick of having the character remember stuff from the previous timeline. Maybe some arcs are flashbacks that take place within that new timeline when Peter was simply in character and not post-OMD OOC Peter.

Old Peter was always ready with a quip, his humour had bite in it, hence why characters even got baited and distracted by it.
If anything, more scathing sense of humor was an extension of Peter's temper, which was a big part of his character and also part of the reason he couldn't shut up (because he acted before thinking).
Making him just reference-spamming motormouth takes away a lot from Spider-Man. There's a lot of ironic quipsters, and there's a lot of crude ur mom edgelord jokers in Marvel, old Spidey was memorable because he was neither.

I don't think any writer cares enough to take on the daunting task of actually fixing ASM. They'll slap bandaids on a man dying of gangrene instead of amputating and cutting out infected flesh.

It's a tough pill to swallow and it could prove to look very embarrassing to outside people but in actuality the people reading would welcome it wholeheartedly. It is very sad that it has been that long (minus most of the Spencer years), but for everything has that been done to readers and consumers of the book, editorial needs to get shit down their throat creatively speaking and they need to chew on the fact that they pumped our shit for 20 years and now they need it fed back to them. And it's best to just do it by dismissing their own fantasy of what Spider-Man should be and show that's not the right idea at all. Writers got less confident over time because they came from colleges that didn't teach them well or were consumed by ideologies that don't reward hard work but they also themselves probably didn't feel like branching out beyond their comfort zone of media they know and like which means their jokes get samey, they get less confident, but they still have the job because corporations and execs are dumb with no taste, so then they have to justify why they still have a job even though they can't write or make good jokes.
So yeah, Spider-Man isn't funny anymore because people don't like negative things that are inherent to people that are also beyond what they are comfortable with. I'm writing this story where a main character will be racist and sexist in subtle ways and will have to be confronted. And it will be a gradual process. Something that is painful and awkward.
