This kind of issue perfectly sums up the problem with the artstyle they’re going for, there’s a lack of basic cartoon appeal. The faces also look too blocky and lack depth too, I’m one of the few people who likes the look of the newer Spongebob seasons and I feel like they don’t have this problem. (at least in most cases that is)

They all look incredibly bland and are all aiming for a "realistic" detailed look, and if they’re not, the artists are having too much fun seeing how much shit they can fill the background with rather than focusing on the style aspect (the background of Kiff and Bluey are good examples of this issue, they have very similar styles in their backgrounds with their soft and "chibi" look)Modern backgrounds look incredibly stiff as a result, shows from the 2000’s like Chowder, Flapjack, The Proud Family, SpongeBob, etc. all had various stylized backgrounds that make modern toon backgrounds look bland in comparison.
