>ALL the Hanna-Barbera shorts (aka the good ones), uncut
>Sounds like they've remastered the shitty-looking shorts
>Even includes a featurette on Mammy

Is this the first time this series has been treated well by WB?

God bless Warner Archive.
>>
Her name isn't actually Mammy Two-Shoes, that was Mark Kausler mixing her up with a similar Disney character — I don’t think she had a name
Anyways this is really cool
I'm curious what elements they're using, the original elements of the 40s MGM cartoons were unfortunately lost in the 1965 fire
>>
>>150300345
presumably, AND a warning on the back of the packaging saying "this collection is intended for the adult collector and may not be suitable for children"
>>

>I'm curious what elements they're using, the original elements of the 40s MGM cartoons were unfortunately lost in the 1965 fire

The press release said
>featuring several fully remastered shorts and quality improvements made to many others.
so I assume they found better dupe prints for the ass-looking shorts.
>>
>>150300282
holy fucking based
>all 114 classic shorts

legit my only problem with this is they just just released the cinemascope collection and since this will have those as well it means I've double dipped

Hopefully people won't complain
I always found those weird colored borders on MGM cartoons interesting
Dunno if they came from MGM or Turner versions but for as weird looking they are I guess they prevent stuff in the actual cartoon from being cut off
>>
>>150300345
>blackface jokes
Oh, they're definitely gonna have those warnings.
>>

Doubt it. WB know which shorts looked like crap coz they omitted the technicolor credit on those shorts on the OG bluray and streaming

Thad K went on a long multi post rant over how Porky 101 used TV prints
I respect Thad and sure, it would be nice if they were all new scans but that wasn't in the budget and the concept of having every B&W Porky cartoon bugless and on one set is worth it
>>
>>150300555
oh yeah I'm not actually upset by it, I'd gladly pay like $250 for a COMPLETE set like we're getting
>>

Never understood why the warnings upset some people so much. I've seen anons fucking RAGE about them in looney tunes threads for years now. If corporate want them to include them so we get the actual works unmolested who gives a shit what warning they put before it?

As long as theres not some massive online OUTRAGE at the racist stuff this opens the door to maybe getting the last few avery shorts or even the censored 11 officially restored. they can have a warning that says you're a raging racist if you watch these for all I care so long as we get them

In some ways I agree
I feel it's a mix of things, both the way it's sort of demeaning to the audience, like they wouldn't be able to tell a black guy with huge red lips and a bone through his nose is offensive without some white executive pointing it out to him
Personally I also feel sometimes it and other attempts at "addressing" these things ends up being disrespectful to the hard work of the actual black crew members behind them
It's one thing when it's Mel Blanc doing a Stephin Fetchit voice (who himself could apply as well), I personally feel it's another thing entirely when it's an actual black actress like Lillian Randolph, Eddie Anderson or the cast of Amos n' Andy
It's unfair to minimize their careers just because their roles are "problematic" or suggest they were in the same league as "Birth of a Nation" or something, they worked just as hard as white actors, if not harder because of the limitations placed on them, and had to deal with discrimination both from white racists and groups like the NAACP who claimed to be looking out for them
Picrel, article from 1961 about the cast of Amos n' Andy, all but shut out of the industry without residuals because the NAACP got the series cancelled before it reached a certain number of episodes
>>
>>150300767
Nah, he was right to go scorched earth on that Porky 101 set.
Might as well just use old TV prints instead of doing a half arsed remaster like they did with that garbage.
>>
>>150301064
I mean sure, in principal I agree with what you're saying but in practicality they can demean me harder daddy for all I care so long as we get them. This isn't either or, it's warnings or no shorts. The end. Just remux the set yourself if it bothers you seeing them.
>>
>>150300861
It's so damn performative

We KNOW these cartoons were made in a different era, we KNOW they don't line up with what is being produced today, we KNOW they don't represent the views of the modern employees of the company.
>>
>>150301786
I'm okay with performative. Yes it'd be better if people could stop being insane for 5 seconds and judge old media for themselves, but a quick disclaimer that pays lip service is pretty unobtrusive in the grand scheme of things.
>>
>>150301873
I do suppose that, were the disclaimer not there, people would be bitching about that. I agree with you here.
>>
>>150300861

>>150301786

Unfortunately, people love to be performative. Our culture has long gone away from being genuinely upset about something. The worst thing is that, even if you leave social media, it infects itself into the real world anyway.

But yeah, this blu-ray sounds sick. Will buy day one.

>we KNOW
>saying that on the internet
>saying that on this site
>in current year or any year
All you need to know is that the warning is to cover WB's ass and wave a no-no finger at racists that don't give a fuck. In fact I wish they wouldn't give a fuck about a few second warning. Everything bothers people and that goes both ways.
>>
>>150300861
>If corporate want them to include them so we get the actual works unmolested who gives a shit what warning they put before it?
Because many times they're still censored
>>
>>150303111
but they're not going to be here...

Stuff like Fantagraphics giving the warning in their Disney books but Disney still forcing them to remove or edit stuff is stupid as fuck, but thats not whats happening here
>>
>>150300861
I never caught them personally but I would be pretty annoyed if I had to listen to Whoopi Goldberg give a short speech about it. Luckily we'll just get a simple black screen with white text, I'm sure.
>>
>>150300282
You know, as a kid, I had no concept of "the black help", so it never once occurred to me that Mammy was a maid, I just thought she was the owner of the house and simply liked keeping it tidy, especially if she was a housewife. She even had a bedroom in the house in some shorts.
>>
>>150301786
you pissing your pants over nothing is performative
>>
>>150304940
Whoopi gave a good perspective on the crows from Dumbo and how they ought to be celebrated a lot more for what they DID accomplish in the time period rather than just demonized as "racist" and buried (all but the leader are voiced by an actual black minstrel group rather than everyone being white guys doing black voices, they get to do some fun improv banter, they have the best song in the film, and they're unambiguous good guys in a film FULL of assholes, who help out Dumbo in a clever way by giving him a confidence boost with the "magic" feather).
>>
>>150300861
Racists are angry at being reminded that they're old and their viewpoint is no longer validated.
>>
>>150300282
Haven't they already done multiple shorts blurays randomly picking episodes as collections?
>>
>>150305051
Not saying she doesn't have decent opinions about the content, I just want a black disclaimer screen and nothing else, pretty much.
>>
>>150300390
>I'm curious what elements they're using, the original elements of the 40s MGM cartoons were unfortunately lost in the 1965 fire
There's a chance they could be using the elements this guy had. Better than the metrocolor prints than warner had at the time.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oN20_vHp4A4
>>
>>150300282
The fuck, how did they get that picture of me and why are they using it there?
>>
>>150305124
nah, that's looney tunes

tom and jerry has been released on BD twice; first was a volume 1 of what was going to be a complete series, a cancelled volume 2 which was going to omit some shorts, and a cinemascope collection featuring most of the last shorts by HB.
>>
>>150300390
I wouldn't put it past a jew to just outright lie about that.
>>
>>150300861
Because they shouldn't be included at all and there's nothing wrong with any of those shorts. Enabling this trite behavior by including a warning will only embolden them to push the issue further until the shorts are permanently destroyed and the character eventually banned.
>>
>>150301772
See? This is the problem. You're already saying: "Well, if they didn't include the warnings we'd NEVER be able to see them!"

Yes, we can. They've already been released, the people have already seen them, there's a demand for them, and it's a well known and beloved series. There's no reason we shouldn't have them re-released and remastered and there's nothing anyone would do about it if they were. But you give in to these bad actors, enable their behavior, and suddenly things start to get ridiculous.
>>
Is you is or is you aint mah bebehhhhh
>>
>>150305051
I think the best perspective on that is you shouldn't ever include non-White characters in any media because eventually someone will decide that your media shouldn't be consumed anymore for reasons you could never fathom.
>>
>>150300282
I am super happy....... on behalf of those who care. For preservation? Great. I kind of grew out of Tom & Jerry.

I’m not surprised Warner is treating Tom and Jerry well, it’s like, the most popular cartoon on the planet, literally, I watched Tom and Jerry on Boomerrang when I was young, I’ve seen IPad kids watching Tom and Jerry, boomers grew up watching Tom and Jerry, the show has huge fanbases in China and India, that show is timeless and beloved worldwide.

Wait, she wasn’t? It didn’t even occur to me until you mentioned it. I just thought Tom’s owner was a black woman. A bit of a caricature sure, but I don’t recall anything giving me the impression she was a servant of a white family.
>>
>>150300282
So they managed to find prints of all the old Tom & Jerry shorts? We didn't lose any in the great MGM Grand Fire?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MGM_Grand_fire

Please say yes.
>>
>>150306912
Unfortunately not. George and Jerry Beck did a special quick Extras podcast about it today and they thought they may have actually found some of the original prints but sadly not the case. They are however using better prints with a better restoration process than what was used for the golden collection vol 1

>>
>>150307096
Oh well, can't blame a guy for hoping. Hate to say it but I think advanced AI recreations might be the way to go if the originals are lost/unavailable. Could be that's what they used for the restoration process.
>>
>>150306789
The concept is universal (cats chase mice) and there's almost no dialogue to worry about translating. No surprise that it's endured and succeeded all over the world.
>>
>>150307114
they shouldn't be here in the first place, warning are fucking gay
>>
>>150307198
I agree. However I also live in reality so am willing to just ignore something that doesn't effect literally anything. First thing I'm gonna do when I get the set is remux the shorts and special features and stick them on my nas and I'll never see the warning. If it bothers you so much I suggest you do the same instead of finding inane things to be OUTRAGED about

I used to watch it all the time as a Millennial and there's something comforting about younger people still loving it. Kind of like the cartoon equivalent of Azumanga Diaoh blowing up again recently. Sometimes the kids are alright.
>>
>>150306789
Why is it that, despite the shows universal recognition, nobody can fucking replicate the style of writing in it? Every modern attempt at rebooting Tom and Jerry just boils down to nothing but cartoon slapstick and violence, when in reality there was more to Tom and Jerry’s humor than just that.

>>
>>150311116
It's all in the timing and setup though, not just pure "it's violent". The buildup to Tom roaring his head off at the end of Tee for Two is just as important to how funny it is as the actual roaring, and reduced me to hysterics any time I watched one of my Tom & Jerry tapes as a kid.
>>
>>150311683
>the beat of Tom looking down like a moron before it explodes
Therein lies the true funny, not just in thing goes boom.
>>
>>150300480
What about the alternate Fullscreen NON PAN AND SCAN versions of some of the Cinemascope shorts?

You know, they should include a featuratte that shows the edited/redrawn scenes of the "problematic" scenes that were done by Jones and his team in the 60s, hopefully NOT just reciclyng video masters.
>>
>>150311753
but you need that violence to build up. modern T&J doesn't and can't have that.

>>150300390
>Revisionist Kun
>>
>>150300282
Honestly it's a healthy approach to "dicy" older cartoons that don't gel with modern people. Just show it, say it was made, put a thing before the short for context, and that's it.

Amos n' Andy is in a weird spot. On the one hand, it's racist by modern standards by certain people but on the other it's it's groundbreaking for having almost an all black cast and influenced people like Marla Gibbs and Red Foxx.

>>150300861
Because they're really just useless now. They stick it on the start of things but still change the contents of the show/movie/etc anyway which defeats the whole point of putting it on there and the people it's supposed to be for aren't watching it anyway.
>>

Trying to figure out from previous releases and I'd guess around $50. Maybe a little more as a premium for the content. Even an 11 disc set like Huckleberry Hound is only at $70.
