Spinning out of the new Speed Racer comic, it's the new origin for Racer X.
Bump if you're reading
>>150308611Wait, are they actually trying to make a fucking Speed Racer comic universe?
>>150308670I think at best it will just be this and the main title.
>>150308611When these speed racer comics were first announced I was momentarily pumped. Always loved speed racer. But then I saw Russell was writing and immediately knew I’d hate it. They’ve lived up to my expectations. Awful writer.
>>150308751And then he bumps a street pole and his Wanted stars go back up.
>>150308838So you gotta be GRRRRRRRREAT!
>>150308782Too bad this isn't popular enough, would love a bunch of Hiro x Takashi level art of these 2.
They seemed to save quite a bit of his face.
>>150308968The NOW comic gave Speed a proper first name: Gregory (to match his monogrammed shirt).
I will say I do like this design for Racer X. I do hope he becomes a spy by the end of this.
>>150308699I was wrong.
>>150309098As long as it's not another Speed Racer Enterprises debacle.
>>150308670Pretty much. Unlike the Gatchaman line, this is a full-on reimagining instead of trying to shoehorn things within the original series. Tatsunoko hasn't explained why they let Speed Racer be entirely rebooted while Gatchaman has to stay within the '72 show, but one of their reps did say the Speed Racer creative team tried to remove Chim-Chim and they convinced them to put him back.
how many times are they gonna reboot 30+ year old franchises and try to make them new and modern? im so tired
>>150309281Well, so long as the comic doesn't try to claim that Speed Racer is 100% their creation like SR Enterprises did, Tatsunoko shouldn't have a problem with letting Americans take another crack at it.
This was fine, probably the most "work for hire" I've ever seen from Russell X-Factor must have broken him
>>150309669Yeah, since Tatsunoko now has all the rights and licenses out Mach Go, things have to be run by them for the Mad Cave comic. They're stricter with Gatchaman while letting this be a Fast and the Furious, edgy update.
>>150309782>They're stricter with GatchamanI think that's up there with Kamen Rider as one of Japan's most sacred cows. I actually remember when Saban dubbed its short-lived sequel anime as "Eagle Riders".
>>150309835And that probably happened since Saban couldn't get the first series and Sandy Frank was keen on just spamming BOTP or G-Force sales, so of course another big businessman had to get his fingers in the Gatchaman pie somehow.
Thanks for this storytime.
>>150308951Rex is now Nikki Lauda
>>150309052What a lame designJust ford gt40 with caddilac finsBooooBoo this carThey just keep tracing 3d models from forza or something
>>150310087They let Saban have Samurai Pizza Cats, though. Funny how things work out sometimes.
>>150309782>edgy update >in the original show villains are gunned down I don't get your point, anon. And Tatsunoko did an “edgy” update of all their IPs, including the still-relevant Gatchaman Crowds.
>>150308707But the main book isn't even written by Russell. Just this. And you haven't even read it. Lmao, disingenuous dolt.
>>150309722>This was fine, probably the most "work for hire" I've ever seen from RussellYeah. He usually has a passion for what he's writing, but I couldn't feel it here. He certainly TRIED to look like he cared every now and then. Arguably better than the main book, but that isn't saying much.Honestly, I think the key to writing a good Speed Racer is to go heavy on the anime/manga vibes. Not so much in the style, but the attention to detail. I want super-autistic ramblings about fictional race car technology, and all the drama should be derived from that. Although I don't disapprove of including some of the corporate/syndicate corruption they're adopting from the 2008 movie.>>150310497I also think the aesthetic is weak. Speed Racer should go retro-future. Do that thing where the tech is super-advanced, but all the cars and arcitecture look like they might be out of the 60s. It's not an easy thing to do because designing cars is hard unless you have a passion for it, but honestly that's the heart and soul of Speed Racer. You shouldn't be doing a Speed Racer book at all unless you have an artist that gives a fuck about cars. That's why Tommy Yune's little Speed Racer origin book from 1999 still holds up. You kinda get the idea the whole mini-series was just an excuse to draw vehicles. Which is what it should be.
>>150308611Where is Paul Gilbert?
>>150311276>Tommy Yune's little Speed Racer origin bookHonestly, I should storytime that. I've got a lot of fond memories of it, and the Racer X origin is a hell of a lot more interesting than this generic crime syndicate schlock.I'd need to hunt down a digital copy, though. It's hard enough just finding any scanned pics of these books.
