One week in and Light of the World is performing well critically, not just because of concerted review bombing and overwhelming support from its target audience and mysteriously aggressive marketing, but also because, like The Prince of Egypt, it appears to be a genuinely well-made and intentioned film in an era of low-effort slop. It proves that if a project receives adequate promotional support and focuses on a niche audience instead of trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator with watered-down, non-offfensive Grubhub blandishments, 2D can still hold its own, even with cheap-looking, less visually unimpressive TV series grade animation
>>150326042what was your favorite thing about it?
>>150326042Is the animation really that bad?
>>150326945It compares to a high-budget TV series like Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure, but is far, far below an actual traditional 1990s hand-animated and painted movie, even a late period one with lots of digital work like Tarzan and Road to El Dorado
>>150326042that boy is supposed to be John the Apostle btw
>>150326399The stigmata through the wrists instead of palmsSeeing Jesus actually working as a carpenter >>150327423At the beginning I think he was John the Baptist like okay this kid is growing up on stories of the Messiah and will prepare the way for him. A cartoon movie for children wants a child character to be the audience perspective character but it's weird
>>150327844I hope the crew didn't make this gif to try and promote the film cuz that's just cringe
>>150328727They probably did. The official Youtube channel is full of shameless, if understandable self-promotion
>>150327492Aside from John who's just a kid, the other disciples were also aged down to their late teens to make them more relatable to younger audiences (except for Peter who looks to be in his early 20s).However since Jesus is himself in his early to mid 30s when his ministry starts and ends, this has some unfortunate visual implications amid the current age of grooming panic
>>150328727>>150328737Its from their Instagram
Whether or not I watch Light of the World hinges entirely on how much screen time this baddie gets. Is she in it at all?
>>150328803Yikesaroni
I'm not watching something that seems like Christan fundie propaganda.
>>150331868100% Christian propaganda but not fundie. The fundies are already criticizing its biblical inaccuracies and Jesus’s magic powers looking too magical
>>150331868How do you know it's made by fundies? Maybe it's made by Catholics.
>>150332124If it's selling Christianity, then it's fundie until proven reasonable.
>>150332124Fundie is short for fundamentalist. There are Catholic fundamentalists. There are fundamentalists of every religion.
>>150332124Also if it's American-made, then there's a snowball's chance in hell it's Catholic.
>>150332189Way to much dark skin to be connected to american fundamentalist
>>150331868>>150332124All Christians are the same shit>>150331987>its biblical inaccuraciesLike what? I didn't notice any. Except of course John, brother of James, being a child. They didn't include the stabbing during the crucifixion but having the crucifixion as bloody as they did in a cartoon is impressive.
>>150331022Sadly little >>150331987To clarify I didn't notice inaccuracies but there were scenes and dialogues they chose to omit for time or narrative flow. I don't remember specific onesWell, maybe Zebedee's lack of faith could be an inaccuracy, I don't think he's characterized that way in scripture. But it's a nice arc and shows that isn't just the rich man who needs to turn from worldly matters to spiritual pursuits
>>150331987There are a whole bunch. The ones that stood out to me were the Pharisee being healed from blindness, Mary being the person who was demon posessed, the sequence of Jesus walking on water is wrong. The Via Dolorosa is also wrong.I want to see some r34 of Salome, Mary, and the other Mary
>>150332174Where the hell are the Catholic fundies in modern day? All I ever see is Protestant whackjobs.
>>150332538What would it take to run these two through an AI and get some lewd results?
>>150332596Not as hot as the goat unfortunately
>>150327492> The stigmata through the wrists instead of palmsI noticed that too>Seeing Jesus actually working as a carpenterOne of my favorite jokes is when everyone is listing His various miracles, and then there’s one guy who had just his table fixed, and describes it as “adequate.”
>>150327492It is not Stigmata if they are His Actual Wounds .Stigmata are the Vvlnerae Christi appearing unto the Saints through Supernatural Miraculous means .
>>150332302>They didn't include the stabbing during the crucifixionI was waiting for that to happen and was disappointed when it didn’t. I think there was a scream or a sound effect that implied it was happening offscreen while the picture focused someplace else, though.
>>150332478>there were scenes and dialogues they chose to omit for time or narrative flowSpecifically, there were probably like 8 or so disciples who weren’t really named or expanded on, and were just kinda there hanging out in the background the whole time.
>>150332545That anon doesn't know what he's talking about. Catholicism and fundamentalism are nowhere near the same thing. Fundamentalism is a belief in strict literal interpretation of scripture, which isn't remotely consistent with Catholic doctrine.
>>150331868This, they'll never top VeggieTales so what's even the point.
>>150326042> like The Prince of Egypt, it appears to be a genuinely well intentioned filmI thought so too, right up until John tells the audience to scan the QR code that popped up on the screen, encouraging children to buy books and sign up for classes. That retroactively made the movie feel more like it was a recruitment video for the one specific church.Prince of Egypt, on the other hand, always felt more like a genuine work of art that just happened to have religious source material, but was only communicating the message and story without any agenda.
>>150333553Media in general has become more commercial since the far-off year of 1998, but a QR code IN THE MOVIE is insane.
>>150326042yipee shota apostile!!>>150328803does judas appears as well?
>>150333675Judas is there. He felt just a touch hammy to me, but otherwise he plays his part well enough. Not a huge role, but still bigger than most of the apostles. Also he’s very attractive
>>150333846i think i'm sold guys.besides the weird church qr code part, this is gonna be a fun ride >:)
>>150333653>>150333653>Media in general has become more commercial since the far-off year of 1998Actually media commericalization goes back even further to the 1950's when in the middle of the episode they would have the characters endorse whatever their sponsor wanted to push It usually ranged from either they integrate the product into the story of the episode or they would have a segment dedicated to it and then go back to the usual story Don't know about movies doing it though
As someone who grew up non religious and who has only heard bits and pieces of the Jesus story secondhand through pop culture, Lucius is one is the chaddest characters I have ever seen.
>>150333653This movie was privately funded solely to shill their media company to Sunday schools, the theatrical run is just promo. It better not inspire anyone else.
This movie was made for five year olds. Every couple of minutes, a character will very simply and clearly explain exactly what is going on, and then tie it back to the message of the film and spell out “And THAT is why it is so important to always have faith.” Just like the moral of the day segment at the end of an ‘80s saturday morning cartoon. And, that’s not a bad thing. It was definitely what they wanted to do. It doesn’t take too much away from the story. It just didn’t have the all age appeal pr the grander sense of scale that I personally would have preferred. Felt a lot more like Joseph King of Dreams than Prince of Egypt.
>>150328803Overrreacting. There's a bigger issue of how dark skinned everyone is including Jesus who would be lighter like levantine people today.
>>150334807They all look like they spend a lot of time working in the sun. Which they do.
>>150331022Jesus and John the apostle are the only two major characters, and then there’s a full baker’s dozen more who all suffer various levels of dilution, most of which need to speedrun through their own small arcs. The movie is only like an hour and a half long. Salome does have the advantage of being first introduced in the very opening scene, though. So technically she’s there from beginning to end.
>>150332596Was hoping to see more prostitution out of this one.
>>150332538>the Pharisee being healed from blindnessI know absolutely fuckall about what’s actually in the bible, and even I thought that part felt a little too convenient. Glad to see that instinct was right.
>>150334862Sure but everyone BUT the Romans look like that.
>>150332302>All Christians are the same shitSure they are you unwashed Protestant.
>>150332596How is THAT supposed to be a prostitute?
>>150333392>strict literal interpretation of scriptureThe Rapture doesn't come up anywhere in the Bible.
>>150335289The Pharisees are also pretty pale.
>>150335316It does. In Revelation. It just doesn't say exactly what it is. Just that God will take the church, meaning all the believers/followers of Jesus, into Heaven.
>>150335310What is it you think a prostitute is supposed to look like?
>wanting R34 of Gospel charactersOkay that's it, I'm hitting the eject button on this thread. You're all psychos.
>>150335364First day, huh? See you next week.
>>150335364Have you not seen hellonearthIII's virgin marry pics?
>>150335358
>New Testament The only interesting parts aside from Jesus' story, was Paul's story. Otherwise, just adapt the Old Testament.
>>150335327Further proving it's bizarre character design choices. Hearing that it's not very accurate to the bible is disappointing too.>>150335358Your mother.
>You WILL eat the bugsWeird recurring gag.
>>150326042Looks interesting.
>>150335420This is Jesus’s story though. Which I see depressingly little of in animation, outside of the Nativity.
>>150335477>Your mother.Okay well played. I walked into that
>>150335721I'm sorry. It was low hanging fruit & I feel bad for it.
>>150335477>the dudes that spend all their time indoors reading are pale>the dudes that spend all their time outside fishing are not>the italians visiting from the north are whiteThere is nothing bizarre about any of that.
>>150335741Nah it’s okay, it was funny.
What else do you think he’d kiss for thirty pieces of silver?
>>150335783The italians stationed in the same place where all these people are. Plus not EVERY person living there works outside.
>>150335420The problem with Old Testament stuff is a lot of it could be seen as "problematic" among the current world, like imagine if they adapted what happens after Prince of Egypt when they finally find the Promised Land.>Here's your Promised Land my people!>uh God, there's people living here already>yeah, go kill them and take their shit and land>what??>KILL THEM ALL IN MY NAMEkind of a little one the nose considering what's going on with Israel right now eh?
>>150332538>this is marycowards don't have the fucking balls to stay true to history and make mary 14/15
>>150336097Jesus is 30 something in this, so she needs to be at least 44 here even if she had had him at 14. Actually, she looks like she could be in her 40s, so maybe this is that rare case you wanted.
>>150336014>not EVERY person living there works outsideName one.
>>150336186Mary Magdalene was literally a whore so most of her work is indoors.
>>150336250They characterize her as homeless and sleeping outdoors in a back alley in this movie.
>>150335872Jesus Christ.
>>150332538Okay, dumb question, but, where was her husband, Joseph, during the events of this story? Is he dead by this time? Or just back at home? I have not read the book and am very uneducated on this entire story.
>>150336333Joseph is alive for most of the story and is probably back homeHe is still a carpenter
>>150336404Sucks be had to miss his son’s big day. I guess it’s always been hard to get time off work.
>>150332538Okay, I have to take back my claim that the sequence of Jesus walking on water is wrong. I really just misremembered it.On the other hand, the sequence in which one of the Pharisees offers up his tomb is wrong.I am getting my New Testament mixed up since I have not read it in a while. I was using Biblegateway to read and compare the stories of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
>>150337950Just having Mary being the one possessed that Jesus exorcises is too much of a deviation.
>>150335741>the Pharisee being healed from blindnessThat's not an inaccuracy, he did heal blindness, adding a healing with plot relevance works well.>Mary being the person who was demon posessedOkay, yeah, that's right. Did see that and that thought "was she demon possessed? Was she even demon possessed in this movie? She just seems like an insane person here". >>150333202Which is weird because like even if it is a movie for very yourself children they are children who have been in church hundreds of times hearing about Christ's healing blood and seeing depictions of the crucifixion, just show it>>15033325215+ is just way too many characters to do much with most of them>>150336333He does not have any mention in any of the canonical Gospels after the Nativity >>150337950It would be so much better if a sect that consolidated the Gospels became the dominant Christianity. Fuck having four versions of the same fucking story, it is such a pain to look through and reference
>>150333553>I thought so too, right up until John tells the audience to scan the QR code that popped up on the screen, encouraging children to buy books and sign up for classes. No shit? Fuck, that's just gross.
>>150338770Yeah he cured blindness but you gotta show him doing it for a lot of people first. Where the Pharisee is just one of the many healed.Woman moment would also be pretty outta nowhere.
>>150332538>Mary being demon possessedWHAT? I don't think that's even theologically possible!
>>150332538>>150332596>jewesses>negative milkersYa blew it.
>>150338881Is this a protestant thing? Is my catholic arse just too reverent of Mary to understand what the fuck those idiots were thinking?
>>150326042as someone looking to get into christianity, will this movie spoil the bible for me
>>150339181Angel Studios are apparently Mormon based but not all their productions are particularly Mormon. I saw King of Kings & it was pretty faithful to the new testament.
>>150332174Fundie specially is only used for american protestant fundamentalists like how trad is not just short for traditional but has its own connotations of 50s style housewifery which don’t come to mind when one says “traditional”.
>>150339337Shiet that's a stacked cast. Still, fuck mormons.
>>150338881>>150339181Mary Magdelene not Mary, Mother of Jesus. Too many fucking characters in this story have the same names so they need epithets to identify them. Simon-Peter/John, brother of James/Mary , Mother of Jesus, just fucking give them different names
>>150332596
aren't christian movies supposed to come out later in the year closer to the holidays?
>>150339476When I saw >>150331022, I had to look up to make sure this was a different person from the other Salome.
>>150331868Is the Bible really Christian propaganda?
I wonder if kids actually liked it. They seemed to have tried really hard to make it kid friendly.
>>150344539I think it's fine to do that but explaining so much blatantly while changing the stories too much takes away from the point of teaching them the bible through other media like this.
>>150341224Thank you very much Anon.Hopefully, the women from this movie show up in the brown girls threads.
>>150328803>grooming panicYeah but you just said it. Panic. Like, holy hell, it's gotten bad to the point it feels like children's entertainers can't interact with their own fans because of this shit. Like, you remember that story of Steve Ditko? That for all his reclusive weirdness, if an 8 year old sent him a letter he'd gladly send back an autograph? God that is not gonna be happening soon.
>>150326042It's already been out for a WEEK? Coulda fooled me...
>>150343267Not a good sign, especially for an animated movie.
>>150346603Tbf, it was more my fault for not knowing bible stuff. I doubt any kids watching will even know about Salome or be confused.
>>150345412I know, right? Amazing how short a single week is.
>>150347177yeah, I've heard of people coming back from the dead before week's end

Zionist propaganda.
>>150326042This looks like it's going to be incredibly candy-assed. I'm holding out for the indie Jesus which, ironically, looks a lot less gay than this Light of the World bullshit.
where can I see/ support it? i’ll always give my love to christkino
just saw it’s only US and i’m in norway. oh well. hope you burgers make it a success
>>150349970It’s in theaters right now.
>>150331022sex with salome
>>150333553>John tells the audience to scan the QR code that popped up on the screen, encouraging children to buy books and sign up for classesWait, are you fucking serious? How are people sucking the cock of this film after that?
>>150350191It happen at the very very very last part so it really doesn't ruin the mood too much.I'd probably be more fine with it if they made into an after credit scene.
>>150338770>It would be so much better if a sect that consolidated the Gospels became the dominant Christianity. Fuck having four versions of the same fucking story, it is such a pain to look through and referenceThere are many books that attempt this called Gospel Harmonies.
>>150349929Nigga you're crazy. This is literally furry yaoi disguised as a religious animation.
>>150351906You say that like it’s a bad thing.
>>150341608It would make more money in theaters if they waited until easter but their target was selling bible education shit to schools and churches so dropping it now gives them runway on the school year to generate momentum for home video for the christmas/easter cycle
>>150352405Yes I find using the story of Jesus & Judas as fuel for your gay fetish is bad.
>>150351906> niggacringeThe design is fucking awesome, the bacgrounds are fucking awesome, the colors are fucking awesome. The artistic direction of the trailer in general looks amazing. I haven't seen any evidence that this is going to be sexual but even if it is, I'm in it for the animation. Artistically, Judas Iscariot runs rings around this candy assed Light of the World bullshit.
>>150350354still gauche as shit.
>>150327844>2d animation resurrected>it's flashslop
>>150354379It is literally gay furry sadism porn. It's a grift off Christianity. You are a nigger for promoting it. It's one thing to want more serious mature animations again but the sacrilegious gay furry shit is not it.
Jesus was 6 foot 6, glowing bronze skin, blue eyes and blonde hair
>>150356120> muh sacrilege I don't give a fuck, dipshit. I just want art that looks cool. The production on this looks fucking amazing, the music sounds badass - everything points to this looking like something to look forward to whenever the fuck it's supposed to come out. Light of the World looks boring as shit.
>>150357178Then fuck off because you clearly don't care about respecting the actual faith. You have no say here. You just want to be an edgy furfag.
>>150357265I can enjoy a fictional story just as much as the next person. Stop false flagging you fake-ass christ-tard
>>150327844augh the hands
>>150333553>John tells the audience to scan the QR code that popped up on the screen, encouraging children to buy books and sign up for classesyour joking. right. >>150357586complete lack of tact
