Molly might be the best example of a black girl character that exemplifies the concept of japanese "moe".Black girls in cartoons have a tendency to either be "the cool girl" or "the mature girl", but off thr top of my head I can't think of a single example where a black girl gets to be the fragile one, the crybaby, the one you want to protect. These are the traits that exemplify moe.It helps that Molly's design is so good. One look at her and you see that she is unmistakably African, and all her traits are made to emphasize that while retaining that innocence and softness. A perfect comparison is Aika from I Don't Want to Be a Magical Girl. Also a modern black girl character design but she has a more sharp and solid look to her, which matches her more sarcastic and smarmy attitude. By contrast Molly emphasizes softeness and roundness, like a living teddy bear. The clips(?) in her afro and her tights evoke childishness while her hoodie, the centerpiece of her design, is perfectly matched to her skin and hair color. Her entire color scheme also uses colors that serve to enhance her childishness and femininity, and yet there are no traditionally "girly" colors like pink, which any honest designer will tell you is only used with little girl stuff because it matches little white girls, on black girls it tend to look off. There isn't a trace of pink on Molly yet she remains adorable and soft and girly and cute.She's a fucking masterpiece of a design.
