What did Alan Moore mean by this? Why did he kill off Mister Mxyzptlk?
>>150341177Any why did he make Mister Mxyzptlk so edgy?
>>150341177>>150341183Because it was the send-up to silver age Superman and it seemed like a neat idea?
Silver Age Superman incompatible with the 1980s. Basically "No Country for Old Superman"People think the Clark Kent disguise is unrealistic and dumb. Moore gets rid of it.Superman has a pet dog that wears a cape? Kill him brutally. Why doesn't Superman just kill his enemies? Ok, can do.Alan Moore LOVES Superman and I view "Whatever happened..." as almost a shitpost. Basically a "Why would you get rid of all of these wonderful creative ideas?".
>>150341177It's a plot point from Superfolks that Moore appropriated. He liked the idea of the 5th-dimensional imp fucking with Superman's life, and kind of spun it into a meta thing about the whims of the industry.
>>150341177Because an evil Mxy is just too powerful and has to die for the story to make sense
>>150341355>>150341543>>150341612How come other authors don't get this kind of analysis?
>>150341177Superman could not run away if Mxy went full 5-D he would be like a stick figure on paper
John Byrne's restart was premiering the very next month. So Moore wrapped up the continuity for the old Weisinger/Schwartz version of Superman.
>>150341655They do. Authors have to reach the goal of actually being good and mainstay in comics first. Otherwise you get the Bendis/King treatment where you pump out shallow junk and laughed at for it.
I disagree with the idea that the Silver Age was innocent dribble. In fact, it is one of the most cynical eras of comic books. Moore is just giving a sense of conclusion, and he does so in Silver Age terms. Look at how it is written and drawn to be Silver Age. He even takes care of the details of how the panels should be set up. He doesn't give 1980s dialogue to the devil. He gives 60s dialogue, the difference being that he goes all the way with the concept. I think people have misguided nostalgia for that time. Unlike us, Moore was the target audience for these stories, and he has greater knowledge than us, who take everything for granted because it was already there.
>>150341177was Luthor not really that big of a deal at the time? seems weird he was just Brainiac's puppet for the story for the guy who's usually considered his greatest enemy
>>150345076Silver Age Luthor was not an overachieving villain. In fact, Silver Age has no continuity.
>>150345076Because that works better for the story, you get Lex but in a way where it sells Brainiac’s machine cruelty and Luthor doesn’t get to dominate the story completely
>>150341177It was a sendoff for the character. An ending.
>>150341655Cause they are not as schizo
>>150345076He was Superman's archenemy, Moore just wanted to subvert expectations.>>150345547Bronze Age Superman did, and this story was a final send off for an Earth One Superman where the Crisis didn't erase continuity, using its status quo. Clark Kent works for WGBS, Brainiac has his 80s look, they allude to Supergirl already having died in the Crisis.
>>150341177can someone storytime?
This guy has still never been surpassed in power level.
>>150341177No
>>150348427That's a Girl btw.
