One of the first cartoons shown on Brazilian TV. A study in 1999 also showed he was well liked because he was a small hero, with bright colors, and an attitude that Brazilians love.

What about Top Cat? It is not just Mexico, the whole LatinAmerica loves it too.
>>

The cartoon is full of decent memes, and the dub is pretty damn good.

Also got lots of reruns on syndicated tv, though I don't think it's getting reran right now, for some reason. The channel that had been running it on sunday is just playing biblical cartoons on the timeslot.

Reruns on public TV
Like, you don't understand, in third world countries they have channels that literally struggle to make content so they crank reruns on levels that would make the SpongeBob schedule on Nick look like MaoMao in comparison
Woody, Everyone Hates Chris, El Chavo, My Wife and Kids... These shows got miked like cows in Brazil
Ever heard of that shitty 3D indian cartoon "Motu Patlu"? Indian Nickloodeon is literally nothing but 24h of that, Motu Patlu reruns and the same Motu Patlu direct to TV movies every day

he loves to destroy trees all day long. Just like them.

she cute

That's not right, these shows aired on the biggest 3 TV stations, they just stayed on forever for their good ratings and inexpensive renewal.
>>
>>150341799
He is an asshole so they relate to him
Same reason they are into Ze Carioca, or Mexicans are into Top Cat

Cable wasn't all that present in Brazil back when TV was on its height. People used public channels. The free ones. And these channels ran Woody Woodpecker a LOT.

I remember watching that shit all the damn time as a kid. It was great. We didn't really see "Bugs Bunny" or "Donald Duck" or whatever. We got Woody.

>>150342487
They did not get shown *that* much. They just got shown for a long ass time.
>>

>We didn't really see "Bugs Bunny" or "Donald Duck" or whatever. We got Woody.
Those were also on free channels
>>
>>150343803
Yeah, and we got them what? Once a day, if that.
>>
>>150343811
Every morning, child shows kind of died, but before we had them every single day.
>>
Woody is to Brazil is what Spider-Man is to Japan
>>
There isnt a single other cartoon that encapsulates their culture. Instead of going to brazil you can just watch the cartoon. All youre missing is the brightly painted favella and the robbers on mopeds.

Sometimes I wonder what would happen if the rules of Brazilian public domain became public knowledge.

Every audio visual media from 70 years ago belongs to the public domain in Brazil.

>>150343839
spiderman is loved worldwide, not just by japan like brazil does with woody woodpecker
>>
>>150343985
I'm not sure how that works, since there's the voice acting rights.
I'm almost sure there's a catch, even if it's just Disney throwing lawyers at people, otherwise Rede Brasil would probably be running golden age Disney movies for fun.

That might have been in the 2000s? In the 90s Globo was running Donald etc every weekday in the morning, and I think SBT was still running Looney Tunes daily, too. Later on LT got pushed to saturday mornings.

Blame the government (I'll just assume it was the lefties, as usual, I think it was during the FHC government). They outlawed ads targeted at kids on syndicated tv, so there was no one funding the morning cartoon blocks anymore.
And then they bitch about how kids are always using smartphones. Morning tv is just dismal these days, aside from Rede Brasil earlier it's all targeted at women or sensationalist news shows.

They aren't public domain, the licenses were just dirt cheap.
