What superhero comic made him so mad that he had to make The Boys to fulfill his power fantasy of killing superheroes and boot licking the military?
>>
>>150356349
He just thinks the superhero genre is saturated to the extent where it became a detriment to comics as an industry and medium
PLENTY of writers and artists have expressed that sentiment
>>
>>150356349
The success of Naruto in the west.
>>
>>150356366
That's Ellis. Ennis has gone on record saying that he thinks superheroes as a concept are silly because he grew up reading comics like Judge Dredd, which leads me to believe he wasn't paying much attention when he was reading Judge Dredd as a kid.
>>
>>150356366
The weird thing is that only Americans equate comics == superheroes. It's as if movies could only be about cowboys or novels, love affairs of the aristocracy.
>>
>>150356479
It's the largest genre segment of the market, a market which in itself is niche and most people only have surface knowledge. It doesn't help that a great deal of academic work regarding comic books massively misrepresents the actual history the industry and medium. It's like how manga outside of Japan equated with action/adventure shonen and romance books aimed at tweens and teens.

Most TV shows are about detectives but nobody complains about that.

Again, only in the USA. Everywhere else has a varied comic book market.

In retrospect, I've been enjoying The Boys more.
>Plane scene
A classic scene.
>X-Men parody
It gives more depth to the X-Men, and it deals with current racial conflicts, unlike the X-Men.
>Homelander
Superman if he were a good character. I think what makes him better than Superman is that Ennies puts effort into writing him. He mixes the idea that he's like the naive superhero with narcissistic behavior.
>>
>>150356349
He's just not from the US.
Superheroes are quintessentially American. Brits are way more likely to find the concept silly.
>>
>oi, captain america's such a disgrace to the actual WW2 vets that cherished him as an inspiration!
>I make REAL gritty war stories based on me time in northern ireland during the troubles, which I never actually faced the brunt of
>superheroes are so repetitive am I roight? anyway here's me 500th story about an ex-marine vigilante gunman clad in black, filled with gratuitous gore and male rape jokes
>>
>>150357708
The only really interesting part about The Boys is Ennis admitting that his favorite character archetype is just a violent sociopath but it's so brief and unexplored it doesn't really matter.
>>
>>150357708
WW2 was bullshit, Captain America is a lame fuck. Kirby has better characters.
>>
>>150356623
To this day I wonder what Ennis thinks of Steve Rogers having been retconned as always having been a Nazi/HYDRA sleeper agent since Secret Empire...
>>
>>150356479
Comic Books used to have a lot genres but those got reduced ot Superheroes and kiddie comics. Even now it's just Superhero comics with "adult" sensibilities. By adult, I mean something for manchildren to enjoy. Even then they somehow fuck it up.

Plus, a company like DC would make something like Amethyst of Gemworld or Johan Hex which easily stand alone in it's own universes. But those stories eventual became a part of greater DC universe.
>>
>>150356602
Necronomicon isn't that edgy
>>
>>150356349
The Boys is not a particularly angry comic. That would have made it better.
>>150356436
He grew up reading a lot of military comics.
>>150356602
He's a fan and friend of Alan Moore.
>>
Ennis sucks and his attempt at splatterpunk edge are embarrassingly pathetic
>OI M8 WOT IF SUPAMAN WAS A FAG AND HE MURDERED YOUR MUM AND SHAGGED HER CORPSE? DODGY, EH? NEVER MEET YOUR HEROES, EH?
Very insightful, yes, thanks.

Batman being a normal dude with no powers is kinda hilarious, dude had to operate as a one-man police force with monitoring tech and all that

>He just thinks the superhero genre is saturated to the extent where it became a detriment to comics as an industry and medium

Its not really super heroes but everything around them.

Charging $5 for a comic thats not even 1 cm thick

Everything being a shared universe so you have to buy $20 of comics each month to keep yp with shit

Plot points being retconned or deflated later

Characters needing to not change and last forever

Constantly resetting universes
>>
>>150356835
>Brits are way more likely to find the concept silly.

Brits who have made Thunderbirds are go a block buster hit 2 or 3 times. Not with a new show or reboot mind you but with just showing the old show again, 20 or 30 years later.

Brits, very serious and cultured people.

(I like Thunderbirds but the English can get up their own ass about how silly they think the colonies are while doing their own silly shit)

Well yeah. No one talks about it but the availability of cheap romance novels and fsnfics online pretty much killed women reading comics. That killed romance comics dead as shit. I suspect they are barely reading Archie now too
>>
>>150361789
He didn't fight in the war, cunt.
>>
>>150356835
>Superheroes are quintessentially American.
They are popular worldwide, Yu-Gi-Oh mangaka was a really big fan for example.
>>
>>150362020
What are you talking about? I mean that he didnt get the recognition that Moore got. And with the fan rave about his ABC or LoEG comics made him bitter.
>>
>>150356366
cry me a river
>>
>>150356349
So he doesn't like superheroes, but makes comics full of superheroes which are bought and read by people who mostly read superheroes.
That'll show 'em.
>>
>>150365298
I think he likes the genre, but only the things from the Silver Age.
>>
What's this nigga up to lately? People always talk about his work from decades ago. For example, what does Ennis think about the situation in his country? That deserves an edgy satire.
>>
>>150356623
>still butthurt
And they used to say Americans were tough.
>>
>>150365441
Americans are pussies, but you guys are still angry because you lost a war centuries ago.
>>
>>150365441
who the fuck ever said this?
>>
>he's (((Irish American)))
That explains everything
>>
>>150365533
He's Irish. He has American citizenship. But yes, it's very telling he'd want to live in America of all places, especially when remote work is easier than ever.
