Do you guys think part of why people didn't like Jean Grey, especially after the 90s, was they fucked up her hair/costume?
If they had her hair down more like the comics and her design wasn't as boring in the cartoon, would she have been more popular?

Jean Grey thread I guess.

The four main girls of 90s X-books had something for everyone. Psylocke was the overtly sexual bad girl, Storm's leadership role effectively made her the dominant Career Woman, Rogue was the frustrated perma-virgin who wanted to be bad but couldn't, and Jean was the wholesome wife material one. There was something for everyone, plus Kitty and Jubilee were around to be Baby's First Waifu for teen readers who wanted something closer to their own age.

There were some older fans still seething about Marvel bringing Jean back in the mid 80s, and a lot of them are still around today, but they weren't really the majority opinion in the 90s, and nobody cared about the cartoon making Jean's powers 'useless' so long as she was doing her job of being the kind of girl you could take home to your parents, start a family with, etc.

I guess you have a valid point in Jean's 90s costume not being as iconic and popular as Rogue or Psylocke, but I don't dislike it, and it's one of those heroine costumes that can look classy or sexy depending on how hard the artist wants to go in either direction.

I think the 2000s did a lot more damage to Jean, with the movies portraying her more as Wolverine's love interest, reigniting the love triangle in the comics, X-Men Evolution giving her a really boring costume compared to everyone else, and the comics killing her and keeping her dead for years, and also demoting most of the other X-women down to lower-tier books to push Emma as the female lead of the franchise. That also led to a lot of revisionist history to try and make Jean look bad, and it got even worse when Bendis wrote teen Jean, which ended up being the main influence on how everyone since writes her as an adult.

I actually don't dislike her 90s comics, I just think people's image in their mind was always the animated series design. Like you said it was just a thing among normies I remember readers starting to not like her, but maybe that was seeping through from all of the X-Men media.

I mean I don't dislike her 90s costume.
This is the one that really fucked her up though.

This look bad if the blue part doesn't form the leotard.

Null Hypothesis has good portrayal of her even if you don't like h-games, unironically.

I like Jean

Call me crazy but I think having a locked in love interest might be hurting her for the waifufags.
>>
>>150360523
What about MJ? Sue Storm?
>>
Most people who like xmen likes them for the cartoon, not the comics, and she was boring in the cartoon. She had no personality when contrasted with Storm, Rogue, or even Jubilee.
>>
>>150360594
It's funny because I feel like she was barely in the cartoon besides the Phoenix storylines.
You're right though she was boring, that's why I think people ended up viewing her so negatively for years.
>>
>>150360582
They are well known but wouldn't consider them particularly popular.
>>
>>150360594
I distinctly remember an add for X-men evolution that made fun of her being the only one without a code name.
>>

>Mary Jane and Sue not popular with waifufags
?
Sue I might have given you but even she is super popular after Rivals. Have you been in a coma?

> Boring.
> Storm actress was better in the X-movie.
> Storm is just more interesting than her.
> Then Morrison came along with the blonde who is even more interesting than her.
> Kitty Pride was the X-Men's pet character in the 80s.
> Overshadowed by Wanda in House of M.
She can't catch a break.
>>
>>150360582
Storm is much better known than Jean.

Even her design in the first movie was bland just like the show.
Pretty sure that's why they gave her the shag haircut in X2.
>>
>>150360756
The cast in that movie was so unbalanced.
>The most popular actress was Halle Berry, who was black, and, like, at least in the US, that's a negative thing.
>Everyone was pretty much unknown except for Picard.
> Cast that 007 chick who only knew how to play sexy characters. She never played any character with depth.
> On top of that, Singer has his own pet character in Rogue, being the Kitty Pride of the project.
It ended up with Hugh Jackman becoming a superstar. I mean, fucking Wolverine, right? Marvel understood that he was the X-MEN character since the 80s. Even though Jackman is mid

>Character known for eye catching long red hair
>Tie it up
Why?

FPBP
>Jean begins as wholesome wife material
>Gets married
>Cheats
>So does her husband
>She dies
>He dies
>They both finally get resurrected and get back together
>They have a weird open relationship thing where her boyfriend gets a spare room in their home
>Then it was closed again, I guess?
>Now Marvel wants to walk it all back and pretend the Wolverine throuple wasn't a thing, but you can't delete Ben Percy's explicit hot tub sex scene
Jean and Scott have too much baggage.
>>
>>150360096
The color of her costume in the 90's cartoon was so similar to the color of her skin, it was hard to tell if she was genuinely wearing anything.
>>
>>150360826
I just treat everything after around 2014 as AU schizo canon.(not saying it was never bad before but the cancer became inoperable after that era)

Maybe?

I think its she's basic and got bought back from the dead.
>>
>>150360096
I prefer her red and yellow suit from X-factor. She looked naked in that suit, pure fucking sex.
>>
>>150360234
Yeah, it fucking sucks
>>
>>150360096
No it's because she's a boring character only known for being overpowered as hell thanks to the Phoenix Force
Her current ongoing sucks ass because of this reason, it doesn't do anything to highlight why people should like her while pitting her against snoozefest villains
>>
>>150360096
nah her costume was hot because the toon had it flesh-colored
>>
What's your guys favorite costume? Counting/not counting Phoenix.
Anyone like her Marvel Girl look?
>>
>>150360716
>the blonde who is even more interesting than her
Post-villainy Emma's personality is almost entirely cribbed from how Jean was written in X-Factor.
>>
cyclops is my favorite character in the x-men and i don't care at all about jean. i think the other anons are right, she's kinda boring (or, at least, the adaptations make her out to be pretty boring)
then again, i also don't care about emma
>>
>>150360456
I like her too
>>
>>150360096
She's boring and most of her current history is just powerlevel faggotry, same with Storm
