I never read it

I stopped reading at cabin fever. Distant family members stopped buying me books at old school.

IMO The Long Haul marked the beginning of a shift in quality for the books, every book after it gradually became less grounded and more like something you’d see out of a semi-grounded cartoon like The Simpsons.

I was a huge fan of these books and bought them loyally for years, but I officially stopped at No Brainer, that book was the point of no return, the school was falling apart and shit cartoonishly, they literally had a gag where a robot gains sentience, now that I think about it the books jumped the shark in Deep End with that stupid shit with Manny steering the RV into a bridge gap to fix it.

The grounded nature is what made the original books so funny in the first place to me, zombie Wimpy Kid can never compare.

Stopped at Hard Luck, but realistically I just assumed The Ugly Truth was the "finale." I thought the books followed a consistent timeline, so in my head it went
>Diary of a Wimpy Kid = 6th grade, full year
>Rodrick Rules = 7th grade, first half
>The Last Straw = 7th grade, second half
>Dog Days = 7th grade summer
>The Ugly Truth = 8th grade
When Cabin Fever dropped I quickly realized that the books followed a floating timeline, and I started losing interest.
>>
>>150378018
The Long Haul was when you can tell the books were starting to go to shit
>they introduce that pig as a character
>the Heffleys just so happen to coincidentally bump into the same family over and over
>Manny somehow learns fluent Spanish from one disk constantly playing during the car ride

This shit book was what they decided to base an even shittier movie on?
>>
Old School, though the cracks were showing from Third Wheel. That was when I started noticing the trend of a single day being more than half of the book and it felt less like a diary entry and more like a story posted to a cringe subreddit
>>
>>150378018
>>150378311
Jeff Kinney said several times that Long Haul was written with the express purpose of turning it into a movie. He probably thought the movie needed all of those wacky elements in order to land with kids.
>>
>>150377949
The last one I REMEMBER reading was Long Haul though I might of skimmed Old School at some point

You know how Lil' Cutie was something Greg and his dad fucking hated cause it was so lame and irritatingly stupid? The franchise has become Lil' Cutie. Maybe Jeff should've grown some balls and age Greg up circa Ugly Truth/Cabin Fever. Too late now.

I have a theory that the reason the books started to go downhill with The Long Haul was because, regarding the books timeline, Greg would’ve graduated middle school around the next book, so Jeff thought, "oh shit I’m gonna have to keep the status quo and not age up Greg, mind as well throw a little wackiness in there if that’s the case", but then as the books went on he started to go far too overboard till the charm of the originals was completely gone.
>>
>>150377949
Old School was the last one. I never read the others, honestly, but from what you guys are saying that was a good move.

Why didn’t Jeff just end the books and make a new series like the creator of Captain Underpants did?
>>
>>150378654
>>150379120
Hell, they could've just sent Greg to high school. The wacky antics might even make more sense under the lens of a high-schooler with slightly more freedom
>>
>>150379176
I think you can squeeze out a little more if DOAWK took place in a highschool setting. Maybe have a chapter where Greg borrows his dad's new car (without him knowing ofc) to impress a girl, only for him to get a huge scratch on it or something. I dunno.
>>
>>150377949
Dog Days.
>>
>>150379176
Really wish Greg aged as the books went on, seeing Greg as a college adult but still as much of a Wimpy asshole as he was in middle school feels ripe for interesting and funny stories.
>>
>>150379216
Come to think of it, Jeff should also writing books geared towards adults, imagine if Diary of a Wimpy Kid wasn’t a kids book and we saw him acting like a real middle schooler, cursing and being obsessed with sex, shit would’ve been funny as fuck.
>>
>>150377949
when i turned 14, the last book i got in pic related was ugly truth, my favorite story from that book was probably the school lock in saga
>>
Never started, but I did read Diary of a Supreme Gentleman.
Really hate that I missed out on pre-orders for it.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid was the shit. I remember my friend and I being around the perfect age back when they announced auditions for the role of Movie Greg Heffley and considering it.

You can guess how weird I feel to only recognize maybe half of that spread, OP... NINETEEN BOOKS? SINCE WHEN?

When I entered Junior High
I think Third Wheel was the last one I read but I don't remember any of it
With Cabin Fever I remember it for THAT scene (you know the one)
>>
>>150377949
I've never read them, it was after my time
>>
>>150381579
It's a comic depending on who you ask
It's listed as a graphic novel in various online retailers and the series did began as a webcomic
It's arguably in that grey area more than contemporaries because EVERY page of DOAWK has an illustration with comic elements
>>
>>150381602
>With Cabin Fever I remember it for THAT scene (you know the one)

The one where it’s revealed that Manny cut the power off from the rest of the house?

Cabin Fever was the last one I read front-to-back. I think all of the first six are good, and I enjoyed the DIY book. Cannot attest to any of the others or the fanfiction.
>>
Hard Luck was the last one I read
>>
>>150377949
The Meltdown was the last one I read. However I felt that the quality was starting to drop around Long Haul, with Double Down being the worst book of the that bunch IMO. The Meltdown is where I finally lost interest.
>>
>>150378654
The thing about Greg graduating middle school was playing on my mind throughout the entire process of reading the initial sequels. I started reading DOAWK when I was in grade school, and I didn't read the FunBrain strip, but I was part of the intended age demo for FunBrain when it was in syndication, so after the first few books, I was like "What happens when Gurg has to graduate? Is that when we enter the sequel series Diary Of An Ornery Teen?". It was interesting. It kept me reading to see what direction he'd take it. Looking back, I definitely would have preferred Greg aging with the audience to Greg getting the ol' Ho-Oh and being a middle-schooler forever.

Back in elementary school my dumbass saw Greg as a role model and acted like him. Honestly that’s one of the reasons these books are funnier to reread as an adult.

All those moments of Rodrick acting like a dumbass are much funnier as an adult to me too. The newer books feel like they’re geared too much towards children.
>>
>>150378961
Imagine if they tried adapting the later books into live action
>>
>>150381631
Only pthe book sellers and publisher would call it that. It’s a picture book. Simple as.

Fwiw Amazon and B&R are the only ones who group it with comics. The Wikipedia page specifically calls it an illustrated children’s novel.

It’s, unequivocally, not a comic. Neither is captain underpants. Dog Man is a comic.

Jeff Kinney got his start in cartooning/illustrating making a comic series for his college newspaper "Igdoof"

It’s a good example of how Jeff’s humor can be funny when it’s more adult
https://www.reddit.com/r/LodedDiper/comments/16h2ec3/igdoof_used_to_be_wilding/

Or at least it could’ve been, these comics are mostly in the style of humor as the early Wimpy Kid books, it just seems like Jeff doesn’t have it in him anymore.

Explain how it’s a comic.

Not how it has a page or two with a sequential air of images. But explain how this is a comic rather than a picture book.

Is Farside not a comic because it's nothing but single panels?

When I was very young, my slightly older brother read out the entirety of The Long Haul to me and our mom. I forgot if it was across multiple nights or if he did it all over a few hours. It was probably one of the best memories I have of my family. I think he tried to do it again with either The Ugly Truth or The Last Straw but it didn't hit as hard. Y'all are just bitter and are taking books meant for little kids way too seriously.

>>
>>150387600
It's a combination of prose and comics to tell the full story
Picture books can be told without the illustrations (though they do lose most of the appeal otherwise) without losing anything narrative wise for the most part
Same goes for standard illustrated novels
You can read Narnia without Pauline Baynes' illustrations and still come out with a full experience
Comics can't do that and the illustrations are absolutely necessary and can't just be removed
In DOAWK's case, that most definitely applies for the vast majority of illustrations provided
>>
>>150388058
>and comics
It doesn’t though.
>>
>>150388081
Single panel comics are still comics
>>
>>150388137

I still buy the books from Costco whenever I see them but if they didn't stop with The Ugly Truth they should've ended with Hard Luck.
My favorite of the recent ones is Diper Overlode but that's mostly because the book is just about Rodrick so it's a nice change of pace

Based on what Jeff said in this pic
>>150378018
And how he’s currently 54 (assuming he’ll die in his 80’s-90’s), we got like 34-40 more books left for the series, we’ll see how as the books go on Jeff gradually gets more and more out of touch and incapable of writing as he gets older.

Who knows maybe he’ll be senile when he’s working on his final book.
