Thoughts on Thunderbean Animation's physical releases? I'm just glad someone is putting in effort to preserve classic animation.

I'm unfamiliar...

i like these guys and support them when i can
ive always wondered tho, do they seek out the rights for all their releases or do they just skirt by hoping nobody will care

Both
Most of the cartoons they feature are in the public domain but the few cartoons that are still held by usually obscure companies that bought them in the 50s they'll get permission
The special disks do feature cartoons from Disney, Warner Bros., etc but they're not official TB releases and obviously their listings are pretty vague
TB is small enough that they haven't noticed so shut the fuck up

They're great. I worked for them once.

I respect their mission and their efforts

So do I. They may not be /co/, but I respect Valancourt Books as well.

Got any stories to share?

Nothing really, it was just really nice. I already knew Steve pretty well and had expressed interest in working for him. Went down to the studio and helped clean up some prints. I would've worked there longer but the studio is pretty far out of the way from my home, and I don't have any reliable transportation to and from the studio. Other than that, it was just a pretty relaxed experience all around, nothing else to add. The studio is nice, there's a ton of cool cartoon-related memorabilia, one of the most interesting things I saw was a Gulliver's Travels toy from the late 30s. Crazy stuff

It would be so cool to know Steve but I can't color grade for shit
I've always wondered if it would be feasible that TB or some smaller outlet like that would be able to release a licensed Terrytoons set considering CBS doesn't give a shit about them, and the Fleischer stuff is already handled by Olive Films/whoever
Probably would be too expensive even if CBS doesn't care about them

A licensed Terrytoons set would be great! I've heard funny stories where TB worked very hard to convince certain studios that they owned legacy properties. I won't name names, but you'd be surprised how CONVINCED certain companies are that they don't own any particular IP. Paramount and CBS have been together for a while so I'm sure they could actually work something out for little cost IF they cared enough to do it.

Very cool, anon! I would love to just tour the studio, old cartoon memorabilia is fascinating.

It's definitely worth it. "A Day at Thunderbean" could be a fun idea for a bonus set.

>I'm sure they could actually work something out for little cost IF they cared enough to do it.
The way I see it, their indifference could make them a better target; obviously if you asked Disney or Warner Bros. they'd say no because they value their properties (err, some of their properties), but if you tell CBS or Paramount "we'll do the work for you so you don't have to spend your money cleaning these up" at least from my POV that'd be a good pitch
I'm probably overly optimistic and missing some key detail, since if it was that simple someone probably would have done it
>>
>>150396914
You're not wrong! But once again that's assuming you've convinced them (or that they're convinced) that they even own the properties, and that they're willing to put in the work to promote and release something either under our name or theirs. That's almost always the biggest roadblock.

Is that a sale they do, or are they just announcing stuff (because I'm really hoping it's a sale because I'm seeing a lot of stuff I want on there)

I forget who, but some animation guy said the Terrytoons material held in Paramount's archives is in extremely poor condition, and that any serious restoration would have to rely on getting material from collectors.

I think you meant to reply to me
Thunderbean Thursday is a column on cartoonresearch.com where every Thursday Steve posts an update on projects TB is working on, with descriptions of how it works, who they're working with, the trials and tribulations, and usually a cartoon scanned by TB included as a freebie

Gotcha. So does Thunderbean actually have any sales on their stuff, like around the holidays or...?

I dunno, I assume around holidays
Steve probably announces "Hey we're having a sale on (blank)" on his column first so I'd look there first
