Back in the day we called these characters Poochies in reference to The Simpsons where they had a whole episode dedicated to forcing a new Itchy & Scratchy character into the show that was made to be ‘hip’ and ‘with it’ for newer audiences and forced him into everything.There’s always been these types of characters.Nowadays though we just call them Industry Plants.

Nightwing and Joker are uber popular, especially joker. Harley was for a bit, doesnt seem to still be.Deadpool and loki are too. Carol was popular but never insanely popular.
