It has some existential elements that really shouldn't hit as hard as it should with the gradual discovery of the main protags history, especially the ending. It's not in your face horror, but more so the kind which hides under a goofy exterior and peers back now and again to throw you off balance with the sheer amount of tonal shift.

Yeah, it was scary as shit that there was no Raul Julia or Antonio Banderas pretending to be Italian. Just absolutely terrifying. And not a single musical number! I couldn't even figure out who was meant to be Mama Maddalena or even Guido, i was so frightened!
