Cowboys of the Golden Age of Hollywood were among the first celebrity comics to really have longevity in the market. Gene Autry made his comic debut in 1938 as part of an anthology of cartoon and serial characters, but his final comic appearance came in 1959 in his own comic, the same year he formally retired from being an entertainer.
Comics really were seen as an afterthought.
