Looking back, Transformers Animated was quite a cool show, wasn't it? I enjoy the twists and turns it takes with established Transformers lore, how it turns things about the franchise on their heads. It might be the origin of "youthful" Optimus, something we've seen recently revisited in Transformers One.Rewatching "Megatron Rising," it's fascinating to watch how this version of Optimus is clearly in over his head and having to make desperate decisions. I love how he blatantly pulls rank on Ratchet to get him to take Sari's Key from her. I don't think I'd ever seen that before, the Cybertronians actually displaying military discipline. And you get so used to the "grand" versions of Optimus being obeyed without question by the other Autobots, out of their sheer gravitas and strength of personality. Seeing a version of Optimus that has to crack the whip and give a direct order to a subordinate is such an unusual thing, a sign of this Optimus' desperation and the instability of the situation he finds himself in.And of course this version of Megatron is such a beast. Corey Burton should voice Megatron more often.
>>150408083The reason why reinvention works on Animated is because the changes don't undermine the character or setting, and make for an interesting dynamic by shifting previous elements. I really like how "Prime" is not the Autobot commander title in this but just a military rank, since it sets Optimus as an underdog who is eager to prove himself while putting him at odds with other bots within the same rank.
Boy repellent of a cartoon.

Sari was the first humanformer.POP QUIZ: name all the other humanformers in the franchise.
>>150408854Same idea Primal was barely respected by the other maximals
>>150408854Not any more separate than Animated Optimus is
>>150408083its a great series, not perfect some characters in it i don't really like (mainly Bumblebee, Blackarachnia, the Dinobots, Constructicons and on my recent rewatch, I find Sari's way too deus ex machina for her own good despite being likeable)but man the rest of the cast is great. especially Optimus, Megatron, Prowl, Ratchet, Bulkhead, Starscream, Shockwave, Blitzwing and Lugnut.
>>150408083>the Cybertronians actually displaying military disciplinewhat are you talking about, Prime does pretty much nothing but scream at the Autobots in G1

The animation sucked. For a show talking up the smooth streamlined art direction, the characrers barely moved. The action scenes had no weight, characters would just hold at the start of a pose and finish at an awkward angle after 2 frames. The music was bland and forgettable. They over modulated the voices making them difficult to understand at times. The writing was ass, every autobot who isn't the main 5 is the same oblivious jerk, or has no personality at all. Nobody develops, but nobody's personality is defined enough to make an ensemble cast feel like it has chemistry.

It's the last, and probably will remain the last, 2D Transformers show we've seenThey made a lot of great stylistic decisions to make it work even if the faces aren't everyone's cup of tea. I wish we could have another try
>>150410156>>150410205i loved the effects on Soundwave in season 3 even if they were kinda hard to hear, what a cool ass vocoder they concocted for it.

>>150410763Ah, I'll accept that you're right, though I will say I meant more like regular TF series. Botbots and Q-Transformers are humor based and Rescue Bots skews younger.
>>150408083i like how it's just so different than a lot of other versions. i like megatron and optimus being complete strangers, i like cybertron being a bustling planet with a dark side, i even like how super limited the human cast is. i'd love to see something as different as this again.
>>150408083>might be the origin of "youthful" OptimusTechnically, G1 Optimus was youthful too. Peter Cullen was young back then.
>>150411918In-Universe Optimus was pretty season already
>>150411918>>150412041Besides the fact that Optimus’ origin in the cartoon had him come after Megatron, he also trash talked Megatron by saying he was old and outdated.
>>150412063I mean, he went from young Orion to big Optimus, so he should be young somewhat. When you think about it, poor Rodimus got aged from teen to middle life crisis streight away lmao.

>>150412287>Mfw they had Ultra Magnus be the one who fight Galvatron because their toys were bigger.Rodimus will forever be a manlet...
>>150408083No. It's a 5/10. It has so many continuity errors even with itself. It's pretty flawed like G1, Prime, basically all TF media. I feel that its goofier style wasn't balanced enough with its action. It had cool ideas, but never elaborates on them or makes them missed opportunities.Where are the other Combaticons? Why is Weird Al Earthborn now, and his episode has the weakest use of Weird Al. Early episodes had many devices that affect robots but Sari was unaffected. When Black Arachnia used that device that hurt organics, it affected Sari (and you cant say shes part bot because Black Arachnia was unaffected). Dinobots don't talk except Grimlock. Sari's stupid ass Twilight Sparkle miss perfect after she's revealed to be a robot. The human villains suck ass and I can't believe all those VA's signed up for this.
>>150410520They did Soundwave dirty. Like they wiped ass with him. And I like his design, but his origin and defeat is so bad.
>>150412779I liked Prime Soundwave
>>150412750The main cast never really interacts in a significant way. Everyone just has their own stories that sometimes interect, but never leave a lasting influence on eachother.
>>150412845My bad. To clarify I thought the discussion was about TFA Soundwave.
>>150408083I feel like Transformers Animated fans just completely memory-holed all of episodes where just the Autobots stopping human criminals or doing w-w-wacky fish out of water shtick. There were... a lot, and they were not good. That said, loved their take on the Constructicons.
>>150412750>why is weird al earthborn nowcuz the allspark exploded and gave him life, like it did with the constructicons>early episodes had devices that affected robots but not sari>device that hurts organics hurts heryeah, she has an organic outer shell. like in beast wars, they have organic outsides to shield themselves from energon radiation. sari is like a beastformer but the beast is a human
>>150413014that's kind of by design, they wanted to have a way to have episodes exploring the autobots and giving them wins without them constantly beating the Decepticons and making them feel cheapened.
It’s got probably my favorite version of Starscream
>>150412306Poor poor Rodimus
>>150413518it's nice to see a starscream who is 1. unapologetically evil and 2. actually competent. he can clone, he can scheme, he's good at what he does, but he's still the same ol' starscream, so he fails a lot.i love the sequence where they keep throwing his body in the river
>TFA threadperfect timing, I just finished it a couple days ago.it was quite a cool show, a solid sci-fi cartoon and probably the most enjoyable/best piece of transformers media I've consumed so far. I don't know if I'd call it "better" than Beast Wars, but I think I enjoyed it more for how much it excels in the world-building department. I could see why the super hero stuff might bother some people, I could take or leave it myself, it was only really jarring in retrospect when I realized how abruptly the story pivoted away from it. I definitely liked Megatron, the main autobots and the human characters a lot more than the ones in Prime. Prowl was the most compelling IMO. I was also happy to see Susan Blu return as Arcee.>>150410156yeah I felt the animation was pretty stiff and weightless initially, but I noticed that it had improved significantly towards the back end of S2 and continued to get better from there. I thought the animation in S3 was good.>The music was bland and forgettable.I thought the music gave the show a lot of character and helped set it apart from other pieces of TF media.>They over modulated the voices making them difficult to understand at times.I liked this, the modulated voices are one of my favorite things from G1.>The writing was ass, every autobot who isn't the main 5 is the same oblivious jerk, or has no personality at all. Nobody develops, but nobody's personality is defined enough to make an ensemble cast feel like it has chemistry.all of the main autobots had a well defined personalities and all of them developed. Blurr, Arcee, Jetfire, and Jetstorm were not oblivious jerks, and I thought Blurr especially was a good character.
>>150413711Also absurdly powerful. I think at one point Starscream solos an entire Autobot team that has both Sentinel Prime and Ultra Magnus on it.Also can we talk about how great Tom Kenny is? I don't know why this is the ONLY show that's ever cast Tom Kenny as Starscream, given that he might be the only VA alive who can come close to replicating Christopher Collins' original take on the character. How come Kenny doesn't voice Starscream more often? Does he just get paid too much as Spongebob?
What are your favorite explanation for the size shifting stuff? Doesn't have to be canon.
>>150413902*Chris Latta's take on the character, I guess I mean.
>>150408083Does Animated get better after "Transform and Roll Out" or is the whole show like that?
>>150410156I agree on the animation. I love the character designs but it's just not a very fun or pleasant show to watch most of the time. It's not terrible but it is somewhat dull.I liked the voices, though.
TFA created my single most favorite Decepticon Lugnut. It may not be my fav TF show, but it gets high honors just for that
>>150413014>stopping human criminals or doing w-w-wacky fish out of water shtickThe Teen Titans-fication of Transformers
>>150414110Lugnut is top tier man
>>150414318I'm a sucker for absolute brute Decepticons. Brawl from Bayformers 1 is my favorite Decepticon from that movie, maybe from all of Bayformers, because he's exactly like that. Just a big tank that blows shit up and wrecks everything in his path.
>>150408083Best Transformers to date.
>>150414420Elaborate on that.
Am i the only one who downright enjoys Cyberverse?
>>150413902He's an amazing Starscream. He will stop to make grand speeches like the Saturday Monday cartoon that he is, get angry as fuck if you interrupt him, but then he's still actually scarily strong and competent.
>>150414627I could never keep track of the release schedule, so I just stopped trying. Never finished it.
I hate how Prime is a bitch and Bumblebee is Kevin Hart. Plus we didn't need any fucking Pajeet characters. The show is essentially for girls.
>>150413014Yeah that shit sucked
Worst Prowl.
>>150414757>. Plus we didn't need any fucking Pajeet characters.this was before they took over the internet and the Poo in Loo campaign made a joke of that country.
>>150408702>>150408988honestly, without the comic, his fate was probably worse than death. it's like having your whole body paralyzed for the rest of your life. and for a guy like Blurr who's defined by his speed? being stuck and not able to move at all sounds like hell. he can't even call for help, but he's alive and (presumably) conscious, even as a cube. he basically got the "I have no mouth and I must scream" treatment
>>150408083I like what I’ve seen so far but I still don’t quite get what’s “amazing” about the show. The writing is decent and the characters are likeable, but it has the same things you all complain in newer reboots>shit comedy and a lot of it>mediocre animation>lame fight scenes>multiple episodic SOL episodes with lessons for the kiddies>at most 2-3 cool villains and every othet bad guy sucksThe art style hard carries a lot of pretty forgettable episodes.
>>150415298the idea of him remaining conscious as a cube is extremely silly. is that from the comic?
>>150415530nnnnah, at least i dunno if it was since i haven't read it myself. i just assumed he'd still be conscious, just physically fucked in a cube position
>>150415539I know there’s room for cartoon logic in a show like TFA, but the walls that closed in on him all fully touched each other without any space left, all of his body’s components would have been completely obliterated. poor dude was reduced to inert scrap metal
>>150414627Seems like a show that only gets good in later seasons, and I can’t stand shows like that
>>150410205>confirmed by a crew memberYep. Marty Isenberg himself implied if it was for them to budget it the animation would've been better, like the opening scene of Transwarped.
>>150413711I like the I guess joke being that the Seekers are all clones of Starscream since in pretty much every continuity the Seekers look exactly like Starscream. Also we got the definitive Slipstream from this show so that’s pretty cool
>>150413014i liked those episodes
>>150416319Why is Cartoon Network so stupid? I almost don't care that the network is basically going to die, I've probably never seen a Cartoon Network exec make a GOOD decision regarding their cartoons.
why the FUCK did Scrapper and Mixmaster never get any figures of their Animated designs?
>>150408083The comic books are way better. The current comic run is amazing.
>>150417224Never making a Leader-Class Lugnut was way worse, at least to my childhood mind. I couldn't play with the figures accurately because of how absurdly tiny Lugnut was, it wrecked my sense of play. He's supposed to be a strategic bomber, right? And in the show I think he's bigger even than Bulkhead.
>>150416593they wanted the money to go into projects they 100% owned, so they could get more % of those toy sales. Transformers almost universally gets shafted in one way or another when it's aired by CN, either when they're directly involved in production like Animated's animation budget, or just straight up only airing new episodes at like, 6 in the goddamn morning.
>>150417430they're too busy making their one billionth bumblebee to make lugnut.
>>150417224I don't remember if this was official word or just rumor, but they didn't want to pull the trigger on non-combining toys for them in case they decided to have Devastator in the show. Remember, there's a one-to-two year lead time on toy design.
>>150408083My main problem with animated was always>not a fan of the art design>too many episodes of transfomers VS humans All the human episodes just felt like they were punching down. It felt so good once Megatron finally got off his ass by getting his ass back.
>>150414831he was my favourite character
>>150409616>>150411131No one's named all the humanformers by now, so here's the answers:- TFA Sari (And all alt-universe versions of her, including SG Sari.)- ROTF Alice (Same with alt-universe versions. Some's alt modes are straight-up human, some scanned a theme park animatronic.)- ROTF "Decepticon Spy" (From a picture book. Male human.)- IDW1 Garrison Blackrock (Triplechanger, robot/headmaster/human.)- IDW1 Overlord (Briefly a triplechanger. Tarantulas rebuilds him to have an additional human mode in addition to his usual splitting into a jet and tank. His template is an aged-up Verity Carlo, one of the token human characters of the comic. He's also the only humanformer to incorporate mass-shifting in his transformation, allowing him to retain his naturally huge size in robot mode.)While not really humanformers, special mention goes to the Pretenders Crossblades, Vroom, and Skyhammer. They have Pretender Shells that themselves transform from armored humans to vehicles.

>>150408988that's fucking gay
>>150408702that's a good thing
>>150418314i like those episodes for non-pedophilic reasons
>>150414757One and TFA made me realize that I actually prefer Bumblebee when he's loud and annoying. At least then he has an actual personality, which I'll take any day over the stupid mute/radio speak gimmick.
>>150418432Mute Bumblebee is basically a stuffed animal or a pet. It was interesting the first time Bayformers did it way back in 2007 but at this point I'm pretty sick of it.
>>150418469Bumblebee speaks at the end of the first movie, only for the problem to come back in the next movie. then in TLK his voice comes back like magic again at an extremely convenient time, and they didn't even try to match the voice in the first movie
>>150418494To be fair everything surrounding Revenge Of The Fallen is a hilarious shitshow. Did you know Bay himself wrote a lot of the script? There was a writers' strike in Hollywood when preproduction was underway on the movie so Bay himself had to do a lot of things that would normally be done by writers and cinematographers, including coming up with the overall story and a decent chunk of the script. Revenge Of The Fallen is basically the purest version of Michael Bay's Transformers you can get.
>>150417801when you put it that way, it makes sense, but now that the show's been over for well over a decade, I don't think they ave an excuse anymore. the show's going to turn 20 years old in a few years, that would be a great opportunity to do anniversary figures for characters currently without figures
>>150413742>Blurr, Arcee, Jetfire, and Jetstorm were not oblivious jerksyou forgot Jazz
>>150412750Animated's take on Wreck-Gar is funny and his spotlight episode is great
>>150409749>I find Sari's way too deus ex machina for her own good despite being likeableI agree, but there was an episode where she gets punished for using the key too much at least, so i'll give credit where credit is due
my only complaint about the show is Sarishe feels like a mary sue-esque character>gets handed god-tier insta-heals that even ratchet struggles to match>regularly abuses her gift from cyber-god, never gets it taken away for this reason>is revealed to be special hybrid girl, uses this to upgrade herself, she costs her friends their best healing just for a power up>also gets better understanding of space bridges than the biggest expert from cybertron and her dad who's been working on them for months
>>150418843the closest the show ever comes to that is when she powers upshe becomes strong enough to take out omega supreme, but it drains the key and she has to be taken out, herself
really like how they handled why the autobots have such a hard time against the decepticons>Ratchet is past his prime >Bumblebee and Bulkhead both flunked out of basic training>Prowl never finished his training and doesn't work well with othersOptimus is the most capable out of everyone, and it's only because he was assigned to this team as a punishmentmeanwhile, all of the decepticons are heavily armed and fully capable of 1-v-all'ing the team
>>150412750>Early episodes had many devices that affect robots but Sari was unaffectedYou’d be surprised.Besides, by now you should be used to the idea that a new show means a new different everything.
>>150412750>Where are the other Combaticons? Why do they need to be there?>Why is Weird Al Earthborn now?Why not?>Early episodes had many devices that affect robots but Sari was unaffected. She's in beast mode.>When Black Arachnia used that device that hurt organics, it affected SariShe's in beast mode.
>>150417267I just wish it wasn't yet another G1.
>>150419376The story is so different that I'm not sure where the line is drawn. You might as well call Prime G1. Unless you're referring to the designs.
>>150419406>Unless you're referring to the designs.Yes but no. There is also a painful amount of reference to the movie, with "you know the song" and the direct quotes.I feel like that it being G1 also undermine the new stuff. For example, Arcee is 1 to 1 to her sunbow cartoon design despite transforming into a lambo, which cause her transformation to be just her decomposing and recomposing instead of any real transforming like Optimus. The Megatron gun origin story is nice however, and definitly a great reimagination of G1 stuff.
>>150408083I remember liking the show a good amount when it was first airing. Thought it was interesting how early on whenever a Decepticon showed up he would wipe the team and it would be a huge struggle just to come out on top against one. Been meaning to rewatch it one day.

>>150418824Wreck-Gar really was a gem in this show. i think him being a garbage truck is honestly more perfect of an alt mode than him being a motorcycle. I'm still hoping the next media incarnation of Wreck-Gar essentially amalgamates his TFA design and personality but with the talk tv angle from G1. essentially i'm just saying turn him into Mike the TV from ReBoot.
>>150412999It probably was, I just like Prime Soundwave
>>150419571throughout 2007 it was doomsaying because of the early concept art that had the main cast in the exagerated hero poses making people think the proportions were more wack.it really wasn't till the show started airing and by the time Thrill of the Hunt aired in January of 2008, that was the episode that won everyone over. People were taken back by how dark the episode was, showing Ratchet's PTSD and how cool Lockdown was. I'm not joking you can find people losing their minds over how damn good that episode was after weeks of its fine i guess. people were much more positive towards the show from that point on.
>>150421298>I'm still hoping the next media incarnation of Wreck-Gar essentially amalgamates his TFA design and personality but with the talk tv angle from G1I honestly prefer idiot Wreck-Gar's personality, but TV speak Wreck-Gar would obviously fit Animated's design since his head was made to look like a TV, so I could definitely understand why somebody would want that if he ever reappears

Grew up casually watching Transformers Animated. Wasn't a transformer fan, but boy, was it a lot of fun! There just weren't many of the shows that had its fun mixture of action and personality besides Teen Titans re-runs and Ben 10. It was off-beat, it was charming, and even though I've now watched all things Transformers up to Prime... Yeah, no; TFA is the only one that I find memorable. Wish there were more shows like it. >>150426291How would you feel if they made Clobber and Lugnut siblings?
>>150433325NTA but this is something I'm not always on board with in modern Transformers... The writers lack the imagination to think up a convincing robot society, so they stick to what they know (humans) and make the robots basically function like humans in metal bodies, with siblings, coded biological functions, souls, etc. Some of this stuff first appeared in G1, but as jokes or one-off story ideas like "Starscream's Ghost", but later versions of the franchise have treated them like they're essential to the TF concept. It'd be cool to one day see a Transformers show or comic that takes a more "hard science-fiction" approach.
>>150434341I don’t think it’s lack of imagination personally. More that it’s easier for audiences to connect with other humans or things with human like qualities so creatives anthropomorphize them to help people care about them moreIt’s why in science fiction and fantasy races will have fancy sounding words that basically mean the same thing as “soul mate” or “parent”. Also don’t forget even though Cybertronians are robotic they still are technically organic so human like qualities aren’t completely out of left field. In my opinion at least. Because if you just have them as robots they’d have little to no emotion, it’s ironically the humanity in these guys that makes us care about them
>>150414627i will die on the hill that Cyberverse is one of the best shows. you can really feel the love that writers room had for the brand, in spite of the limitations on the budget and shit. so many wild wacky deep cuts elevated to main character status, some fun storylines especially in season 3 with the Quintesson arc and the final 2 specials. It's got one of my favourite endings to any Transformers series. Could it be better, of course if it was 22 minutes per episode, it'd have been a very rich series in its content but in the bite sized 11 minute format, its a fun breezy show you can binge a season in just a few hours. Best thing the show does is it actually just lets Hot Rod be a main character for a bit, first time it felt like the stigma of "him getting Optimus killed" just was never on these writers minds.
>>150431725i found the Constructicon episodes to be genuinely frustrating to watch, like that the writers couldn't make up their minds if they were misunderstood or lost causes. The Autobots don't want them around but also don't want them to become Decepticons and end up driving them closer to the cons. I think they ended up being too affable for their own good and whenever it seems like oh hey maybe they can finally become like mercenaries they can just hire for their services, that ugly piece of shit Dirt Boss comes in and ruins them. I really fucking hate Dirt Boss, might be one of my all time least favourite characters in the franchise. Like i get it, the Constructicons are going to have to become Devastator but as is I feel so lukewarm. Scrapper in Human Error paired up with Snarl was great, i'd rather they just don't have him be part of Devastator.
>>150433325>>150434341>>150434422I think the best way to do that is that Lugnut and Clobber essentially are like The Clones (Fastlane and Cloudraker or Pounce and Wingspan) similair/samey robot modes but very different alt modes, in this case they already have that, bomber plane and tank mode respectively.
>>150434341Early IDW, the -ation stuff Furman did attempt to strip things down and explain that they weren't as humanized, and thus would have to adjust to being introduced to human concepts. Unfortunately one of those concepts was "gender" and that opened up a whole can of worms
>>150434497I can live with that. Kinda like for the Seekers tend to look similar or exactly the same
>>150434437It is.Answering previous anons. It's true that S1 is a slow burn, and the episode release dates were a godawful disjointed mess. But i just rewatched it all and it's much better than i remember.S2 alone makes up for S1's flashbacks by not needing any extra character development or backgrounds so you get sucked right into the new pacing. It blended just about enough of the franchise while sticking mostly to G1. It doesn't take itself seriously as it's very funny, yet somehow it has immersive plotlines going on. It gave a podium to obscure but favorite characters like Wreck'n Ruin, Bludgeon, Drift, Cosmos, even made Lockdown into a tard. They somehow managed to make characters like Shockwave stay imposing while lowkey being chill with the Autobots like hi-fiving Bumbleblee or playing with Wheeljack. Even the female bots were integrated very well without any woke bullshit. I feel for Shadow Striker.Somehow, all the episodes managed to be coherent in one way or another, and that was mostly because of it's political aspect. You actually see Megatron and Optimus talk it out all the time and try to find some midway like needing to work together, or each one gets half of the planet.
>>150434516>and thus would have to adjust to being introduced to human concepts. Unfortunately one of those concepts was "gender" and that opened up a whole can of wormsDidn't Furman have the concept introduced by Jhiaxus, who hadn't had any contact with humans (but had presumably had contact with other aliens)?
>>150434516>>150435277the gender debacle of IDW is genuinely painful. funnily enough the new Battersea titan Simon Furman apparently has no gender but is described as a he so its like things have never changed lol.
>>150435700a summary, btw
>>150436040i just prefer that fembots just exist from the get go.
