For me I’m torn between Jim Smith and Vincent Waller.

I find it funny that for as much as the Calarts discourse is associated with John K, many APC artists would go on to work on beanmouth slop.

Robertryan Cory (most infamous for his grotesque designs he did for Tibbittbob) would go on to design characters for Adventure Time, Gravity Falls, and The Owl House

Nick Cross would go on to animate for Over the Garden Wall and other beanmouth shows.

Katie Rice would work on shit like Pinky Malinky
>>
I've never actually seen this behind the scenes stuff, and i'm not familiar with all of the spumco artists. I like that Mike Kim drawing though; I always thought it was funny when Ren's head had that lollipop shape, but with a fat gut sticking out at the bottom. My mom had a chihuahua that looked just like that.
>>
Lynne Naylor is the most appealing Ren.
>>
>>150409651
Jim Smiths artstyle defined the Spumco Era, Chris Reccardis style defined the Games Era, Vincent Wallers style defined Adult Party Cartoon

I always felt Eddie Fitzgeralds art was underrated, he has like the most 90’s cartoon artstyle ever and I love it, I loved the way Tales of Worm Paranoia look, it’s a shame his legacy will always be being the lead artist for the shit that was The Wacky World of Tex Avery

He’s also worked on Tiny Toons but his drawings were unfortunately toned down from the layouts there

John K was against studios poorly imitating Disney films, people in the 2010s were against simplified, flat rounded characters with circular eyes and a bean smile, they are two distinct styles but are both called "CalArts" for some reason.
>>
>>150409642
For anybody wondering, here’s a little "where are they now"

>John K is a pedo blacklisted from the industry, he just posts art on Instagram and Patreon now.
>Jim Smith and Chris Reccardi have sadly passed away.
>Vincent Waller is the current showrunner for SpongeBob, Bob Camp also plays a heavy role in the show now, with Fred Osmond also working on it as a board artist.
>Stephen Destefano still works as a board/layout artist and character designer on many modern cartoony projects, recent works include Unicorn Warriors Eternal, Fixed, The Day the Earth Blew Up and Looney Tunes Cartoons.
>Mike Kim currently directs episodes for Family Guy.
>Bill Wray gets occasional work on every now and then, stuff like working as a background painter for The Patrick Star.
>Don Shank works as an artist at Pixar and paints abstract work.
>Mike Fontanelli still gets work as a character designer for wacky projects like The Patrick Star Show and The Cuphead Show.
>Lynne Naylor hasn’t gotten work in 4 years
>Robertryan Cory works a character designer for modern SpongeBob projects and other stuff like The Owl House
>Nick Cross works as a concept artist for stuff like Smiling Friends, Tig n Seek, and apparently some of Glitch’s indie projects based on IMDB, he also still works on some cartoony stuff like The Day The Earth Blew Up
>Gene McGuckin and Eddie Fitzgerald are basically retired
>>
>>150409642
Either Reccardi or Bill Wray
>>
I find it funny how John’s art is like the least good in that picture, I don’t think he’s a bad artist, but when compared to the other artists I just prefer their work over his.

Or at least I wouldn’t have said that if his art didn’t degrade in quality overtime.
>>
>>150410057
I don't think whoever made the image picked the best representation of John's Rens either

I find it funny how John K hated on people who poorly imitated the retro flat style, Spumco artists encouraged their work to have organic (smooth) lines

If only they knew utilizing smooth lines poorly would become a problem in itself: beanmouth

Honestly this is no different than professors telling people to stop imitating anime badly. Because there's tons that don't even look the same.
>>
>>150410771
People often dismiss John Ks opinions cause he’s a pedo when in reality a lot of the stuff he says is quite helpful. It wouldn’t surprise me if a lot of college professors read his blog.

Anon I never said John K was a good person I just agree with or understand a lot of his opinions. John Ks rampant perfectionism on his projects did a number of the reputation of wacky Spumco-like projects in itself, for as much as he inspired the industry he played a role in setting it back too, he seemed like a shitty person overall but reading his blog did improve my art a lot.

Also Raven Lynn Clements can’t draw for shit, kek, she shouldn’t act like she knows more about art than actual Spumco artists.
>>
>>150409747
Reminder that Lynne Naylor also designed tons of hot Spumco girls

With all the talented artists involved why couldn’t we get a Ren & Stimpy family tree of creators? There’s barely any Spumco alumni I can think of that successfully pitched series other than David Feiss. Chris and Eddie both pitched pilots but they were never greenlit
>>
>>150411765
Was the Modifyers Lynne or Chris's idea?
>>
>>150411777
Looks like both to me
>>
>>150411765
There's a lineage of showrunners but it's all the same crew hopping from show to show until Disney bought them from CN around 2011
>>
>>150411765
Thurop worked on PPG first
>>
>>150409799
Jim Smiths layouts were better translated into the show, even John K thought that one army song was funny.

Honestly TMS Tiny Toons is overrated IMO, I like when the animations more expressive.

>>
>>150411856
I think someone once made a Spumco family tree starting with The New Adventures of Mighty Mouse, really wish I can find that image.

I mean David Feiss worked on Ren & Stimpys pilot, giving us Cow & Chicken, and Cow & Chicken gave us Maxwell Atoms with Billy & Mandy

Even after the internet changed the name from "Calarts style" to "Beanmouth", people still bring up John K for no reason.
>Oh you think all modern shows look similar? Well did you know John Kricfalusi is a creep? Goteeeem. Bet you didn't expect that
Like most of the people complaining about modern same-face syndrome across shows have no idea who the hell John K is and he wasn't even talking about this, he was complaining about 2D Fox movies emulating Disney.

Lynne has also retired. According to Bill Wray, she moved to New Mexico and has focused on fine art painting.
