I could see an early season episode where Hank and Dean want to keep not-Sonic as a pet even though he's very clearly capable of speech and wants freedom as a subplot. >>150415097The 90s and early 2000s had a similar issue. There was a lot of optimism about Y2K onwards but it all just ended up not happening. The 90s didn’t necessarily make a huge promise but they also didn’t live up to expectations. You could also play off the world feeling more unsafe after 9/11

The Not!Robotnik accidentally makes Sonic which then escapes. Government will find him liable of any damages the Hedgehog does. He's tantamount to a Park Ranger/Exterminator stuck trying to contain the Hedgehog. Since it always runs away he tries to trick it with decoy animals. He's become derided as a crazy anti-ecoterrorist because of this. He's just really tired.Sonic is just a really fast blue hedgehog. That's it.

He may offer up his help to Doctor Ventur, but Tails either knocks something over, and Rusty refuses the help. Or he accepts, but Brock has to babysit him while he is around to make sure he doesn't break anything. Sonic has to go back to the life of a hero to keep up appearances, and the Venture bros have to babysit tails.One of the boys loves Tails and treats him like a pet, and the other one treats him like a freak. Billy at first relates to Tails as a short "freak" genius, but eventually grows tired of him and maybe eventually be forced to take care of him for a while.Robotnik goes to the compound because he followed Sonic over there and tries to "invade," but once Rusty tells him that Sonic is gone, and is on no one's side because the guild hasn't recognized either of them as heroes or villains yet. Robotnick talks shop about his technology that turns people and animals into robots. He brags about how he, in a sense, created immortality. And then Rusty laughs and says how his cloning technology is closer to immortality than Robotinicks' robot tech. They have a dick measuring contest about it.They either of a brief back and forth, or this turns into a B plot where Rusty tries to outdo Robotnick. Or Robotnick asks him for help. While Rusty delegates Brock and Billy's company to solve Sonic's problem.
If I was in charge of Adult Swim I would've had an April fools bit where they have a real woman dub over Dr. Mrs. The Monarch.
the realistic answer would be something doc regrets letting the boys watch/play when they were kids (considering Dean apparently plays with YuGiOh cards, not far off timeline-wise)
