Cookie BaBOOM may just be the most underrated /co/ sexy design
Is it because no one actually watched The Mask?
>>
>>150417098
I'd say the Mask show was underrated, but it wasn't. Animation and writing was mostly weak. It just had its moments.
>>
>>150417606
It borders on being a waste of potential. It has a few great episodes, a handful of interesting villains, but buy and large it wastes alot of its time dicking around and trying to be a TMNT ripoff. Half the time the writers cant seem to decide if they want the show to be dark and moody like BTAS, or satirical and lighthearted like Freakazoid or (again) Ninja Turtles. So you're stuck with an unsatisfying midpoint between the extremes.

They also make alot of strange creative decisions. Tina (Cameron Diaz' character from the movie) is effectively wiped from existence in favor of Peggy. Peggy is written as this psuedo April O'neil type. It's a choice that is neither satisfying or makes any sense given her character's motivation and ultimate demise in the movie. She pretends to have the hots for Ipkiss just to get on his good side, then turns him to Dorian in the promise of a big cash reward. At which point Dorian kills her and keeps the dough before dawning the mask himself.

As if that isnt bad enough they also undo the ending of the movie just to keep Stanley a loser as part of the status quo. There's alot of stock plot episodes aswell, far too many where in Ipkiss loses the Mask to the villain of the week infact. The bar just gets lowered so much it makes the few good episodes stand out all the more.

I've thought about it extensively for years now but the best approach for a Mask cartoon based off the Carrey film would have been a rip off of the 90's Spider Man series. Alot of the same elements are at play in The Mask TAS, down to even Ipkiss being a Parker type loser with a heart of gold living in a big scummy city, but it never really comes together.

Pretorius, Davida Steelmine, Skillit, and Walter make up Stanley's most competent rogues but are often written poorly or never reappear past one or two episodes. Hell Davida only ever had the one appearance from what I remember. The goofier bad guys then take center stage and past a certain point render the show painfully unwatchable and very repetitive. Not to mention you end up with some episodes with cool premises that go to total waste. Booge with the Man sees Ipkiss make a deal with the devil to turn his luck around at the cost of his soul. It's a bit of a stock plot but it could have been cool. Something high stakes and intense for a change, but instead it's just another excuse for the Mask to act like a silly asshat as opposed to being a silly asshat that outwits his opponents.
>>
>>150417098
Yeah maybe
>>
>>150418522
Wait, Dorian killed her?
(I haven't seen the movie in a long ass time and genuinely don't remember that. I remember her turning Stanley over but nothing from after that)
>>
>>150420147
No, she doesn't die in the movie. They filmed a death scene for her but it was never used. Dorian orders him men to throw Peggy into a printing press while Stanley watches.

It's like the show had no leadership or quality control or the guy in charge was a terribly weak boss and indecisive. The tone and quality are all over the place. Sometimes you get stuff like Cookie Baboom, that's funny and so adult it shocks you that it got past censors, and then other times you get goofy garbage that would be at home in a cartoon for preschoolers (Putty Thing and Fish Guy). Some times the writing is good 80s comedy tier, and sometimes it feels like a mediocre superhero cartoon with the Mask fighting some guy instead of joking and making mischief. I grew to loathe Pretorious because his episodes were always moronically simple "evil guy tries to steal the mask and fails" garbage. And it's really telling that the Mask himself wasn't even the funnies character on the show. The supporting cast and random one-offs were.

>>150421037
I liked Pretorius as a character because he was menacing and he had more power than the Mask's usual enemies. I think his thing was that he was very serious while the Mask was wacky and clowning on him. That was a general dynamic comedic duos used to have back when the writers were children.
I think he would had worked if they had put him in a serious cartoon instead and let him be an actual threat.
>>
Perhaps the Mask would had been handled better by the guys who made the Tick show.
>>
>>150427522
Ben Edlund was personally in charge of it, that wouldn't have worked. John Arcudi did write a couple of episodes of The Mask, they were pretty funny. One of them featured the not-Animaniacs.

>While the episode did see airtime on American syndicated channels (mostly former affiliates for The WB and UPN, as well as on such syndicated animation blocks as BKN and Amazin' Adventures) and some overseas networks (mostly in the United Kingdom, Eastern Europe, and Mexico), CBS, FOX Family (in the days before it changed its name to ABC Family and then Freeform, but after it went by The Family Channel), and the American feeds to Cartoon Network and Boomerang have banned this episode due to violent and sexual content that was too strong for its TV-Y7 rating (though CBS never aired any episode from season 2, as the network was trying to revamp its Saturday morning programming block [mostly to incorporate news shows and educational children's programming, as per new FCC regulations at the time] and was only able to air seasons one and three of The Mask: The Animated Series). Despite this, the episode is available for digital download on Amazon Video, iTunes, Google Play and YouTube; it also airs on MeTV's all-animation spinoff channel, MeTV Toons.

I'll tell you what was underrated from the show: Rob Paulsen's performance! His channeling of Jim Carrey's Stanley Ipkiss is spot on. He knows how Ipkiss stutters, when to drop his voice low for comedic effect, and the timing and cadence for line delivery Carrey would have... It's such a quality job for what could be seen as an otherwise simple show. That, and he's just such a charismatic performer in his own right. Rob Paulsen might not be underrated as a voice actor, but he could have easily phoned it in for this show. Instead, he was giving a Jim Carrey-level performance with such an ear for detail!
>>
>>150431036
Again, it's telling that Stanley is the outstanding performance in the show called The Mask.

She's a bit of a frumpy 30-something so the show doesn't give her a chance to show off much but she's generally pretty hot when she dresses up.

>>
>>150420565
I do, and it is probably one of the best episodes in the entire show. Not only do the two VA's do a great job of bouncing off each other, but you honestly forget the Carrey connection between thr characters as the episode plays out. The writers really nailed the distinctions between Ventura and Ipkiss.
>>
>>150421037
/thread

You totally nailed it. The Mask TAS is just that much of a mixed bag. Of the 54 total episodes, I can only really recommend a dozen. The sheer volume of throwaway "silly" villains really gets to be a turn off aswell. It's hard not to sympathize with you, down to even your points about Pretorious and The Mask himself being obnoxious.
>>
>>150421166
That makes a ton of sense in retrospect.
>>150422511
I'll get the ball rolling if nobody else will.
>Shadow of a Skillit / All Hallow's Eve (first ep sets up Skillit, second ep follows his return and doubles as a Halloween special)
>Magic (Davida's debut and sole appearance)
>Flight as a feather (Cookie's debut and sole appearance)
>The Mask Is Always Greener on the Other Side Part 1 & 2 (sets up Pretorius and Walter, but retcons the ending of the original film. Still it's probably the best of Pretorius' appearances)
>Mayor Mask (another decent Pretorius episode)
Feel free to add to the list. I was tempted to add the Gorgonzola episode to the list too but once the chick becomes a witch she's no longer all that sexy.
>>
>>150423483
It's a pedantic note but I'd argue Mask Evelyn is closer to the old trope of the man-starved butterface trope from the old looney tunes than Jessica Rabbit. The fake out Jessica in toon town is more comparable.
>>
>>150424242
Genuinely such a top tier character just to be tossed aside and never acknowledged again. Davida didnt even get a comic appearance!
>>
>>150423483
>>150433616
Does the mask alter the wearer's body when in neutral mode? Because judging by Eve, Evelyn us stacked.

>>150437325
It's like they loved to blueball the viewers in every way possible: literally with all the hot girls who never appeared again, emotionally with engaging characters that vanished after one episode, and intellectually with interesting plot points and mechanics that were never referenced again.

>>150437580
I think w can add Bride of Pretorius, the episode itself is moronic (Pretorius wants to repopulate the earth with any willing woman after a comet kills everyone), but Evelyn is Cute and Eve is sexy if you're into cartoon physics waifus. But we really need someone who watched the show recently to make the list. I barely remember specific episodes.
>>
>>150431036
That's why I recommended the Ventura episode so highly. You get to see two different guys perfectly pulling off impressions of distinct Carrey characters and telling a story ontop of it.
>>
>>150418590
Dr Chronos was also an decent villain. Though dont think about her schemes too much.
>>
>>150437658
>Does the mask alter the wearer's body when in neutral mode?
The results vary from wearer to wearer. Sometimes you get massive upgrades, other times the power of the Mask simply exaggerates your underlying persona. Fish guy and the annoying psychologist both got the Mask in different episodes, retained their base bodies, but gained all the wacky powers in the process. Same with Milo and the one baby who wears the Mask. Having noted as much I should highlight the fact this cartoon utilizes the exact premise of Son of the Mask some 8 years before it. Except instead of Ipkiss' son, it's his nephew who inherits its power. Realizing that while watching the show one saturday night on Me TV toons was a trip and a half.

>It's like they loved to blueball the viewers in every way possible
Fuck that's such an accurate observation it might aswell be the tagline of the show.

Updating the list now btw
>Shadow of a Skillit / All Hallow's Eve

>Flight as a feather
>The Mask Is Always Greener on the Other Side Part 1 & 2
>Mayor Mask

>>
>>150437708
The show really liked time travel alot didnt it? Chronos, Pretorious, and the future mayor of Edge City all had hard ons for it. Off the top of my head I want to say Ipkiss/The Mask have gone to the future, altered the timeline, and visited the past several times over.

Cheese puns and wacky antics is all the episode has to offer once she transforms into the ugly witch. Upto that point you atleast had the eyecandy to appreciate. If you ask me she should have just kept the same look while getting possessed by Gorgonzola but y'know, 90's cartoon, the bad guy has to look over the top.

It's interesting how many stories had Stanley become enamored with a woman in some way. Pretty rare for a boys' show to have that much of a romantic element. Although the girls usually were out to exploit Stanley or in need of his help.
>>
>>150439001
It makes Tina's abscence all the harder to ignore. The original film is a perfect one and done capeshit flick. The plucky dorky hero wins, gets the girl, and saves the day. The cartoon retcons all that away and replaces it with nothing. Every woman Ipkiss interacts with in Edge City (with the exceptions of maybe Evelyn and Davida) just seem to be malicious manipulative cunts.

On the other hand, for a kids show, there were barely ever kids in it. The only ones I remember are the few he interacted with in the Christmas episode.

I'm guessing at least some of the writers and show runners didn't even cater to kids. I really wonder how close we were to a pg13 or even a nc17 Mask show.
>>
>>150441545
Given the time it released, where would a pg13 mask cartoon have aired? HBO?
>>
>>150441644
Would it even have to move? Some cartoons of the era got away with more than the Mask had. I think the only reason nc17 animation has that rating is the blood and unveiled adult themes. No one shows uncensored sex or nudity regardless. So as long as you let things fly over kids heads and cool it with the gore, you can have an adult cartoon with a TV-PG rating, like Simpsons were once upon a time.
