Anyone else read these /co/-adjacent Superman novels by Elliot S. Maggin? They're really good stories about Superman that delve into his psychology and make him feel like a mythic hero. The pre-Crisis Superman/Luthor relationship is very fascinating as well, it's a shame their boyhood friendship has been resigned to limbo.

They're really good, they were released to coincide with the first two Superman films but have completely unrelated plots. Last Son of Krypton is about Superman and Lex teaming up to discover Albert Einstein's last secret and foil an alien mogul with designs on the Earth. Miracle Monday is about Superman fighting diabolical agent of darkness C.W. Saturn as he attempts to defeat Superman and make universal order fall to chaos. Both include flashbacks to Clark and Lex's boyhood together in Smallville.

I read LSoK and it was good until Satan showed up.

kek what kind of name is Maggin? Niggas name might as well be Faggin

That happens in Miracle Monday, not Last Son of Krypton.

Yes I really enjoyed them. There’s also “Starwinds Howl” which is a short story about Krypto, and Maggin posted a spec script he wrote for Lois & Clark online that had a similar feel to the books as I recall.
I didn’t realize a scene in one of those books where Luthor walks through a wall to get out of jail was a likely a callback to a Captain Marvel story where Sivana did the same thing. until someone posted the relevant panel here about a month ago.

Interesting, I liked how in Miracle Monday Lex basically independently discovers magic from first principles rather than learn it from a mystic.

Grant Morrison was clearly inspired by Miracle Monday for their Action Comics run.

Interesting passage about the psychological needs that Clark Kent fulfills for Superman.

Quote from Maggin.
>Clark Kent is Superman's demon—I said that specifically in the second book. I've always thought of him that way. Superman is the real person and Clark is the construct. Clark is a brilliant character and the creation of Superman. My take on Clark is a lot like what Chris Reeve said Clark was when he did the first movie: "Either Superman is a consummate actor or Lois Lane is an idiot. I don't want Lois to be an idiot, so Superman must be a good actor."
>Everybody has a demon, everybody has a hobby, a habit that is part of his character and he can't break. Superman's is Clark. Mine is writing, Bill Clinton's is the saxophone, Jimmy Carter had to teach Sunday School, even when he was president. Luthor's demon is Superman. Superman needs Clark the way most of us need dreams.

Pre-Crisis that was the status quo but Elliot took it seriously and it worked. Byrne inverted it and took it just as seriously.

Lex's characterization is a lot of fun, he's not a CEO since this is pre-Crisis, he's an obsessive master criminal who loves more than anything getting one over on Superman, but it's treated more as an adversarial relationship than them being true enemies. Lex is explicitly not a murderer in this version and his plans involve acts of grand scale larceny or domination. He has dozens of disposable fake identities he uses in his schemes, one reason he doesn't seem too concerned about Superman's secret identity is he assumes he does the same thing. Superman wishes Lex would reform and they could be friends again, Lex for his part is at one point offered a boon in exchange for possibly damning Superman and he cheats on the deal.

I haven't actually read LSOK but I did steal and extend the poem at the beginning to use for my own fanfic.

>"Star child will leave a death world
>For the system of the rings,
>Where the child will grow to legend
>As his life the singer sings
>There among the pastures
>He will meet both friend and foe;
>Where dwell the children of harmony
>And lights of magic glow
>When the conqueror wants his secret
>With the star child he'll contend;
>And when day of battle's over
>Then the legend's life will end."

>Sonnabend the Prophet, Superman Last Son of Krypton
