Hmmm classical beauties

They don't teach art like this anymore and it's a goddamned shame.
>>
Comic strips were printed larger back in the day, too. These days they shrink the strips to fit more on the page and the artists figure why bother.

sth by Alex Raymond most likely

it was more than wasted on sunday strips

If the panel is from Rip Kirby, it might be John Prentice.

Well people drawing were usually working in commercials, so their art was top notch

drawing from reference instead of from delusion

Women were much more plappable in those days.
>>
One thing to keep in mind-a lot of these strips were handled by one main artist overseeing a few assistants helping him out. For sunday only strips, they often had a team working on them for bigger strips. And there was a good amount of money put into these too.
Basically, you get what they(and to an extent you, since the reason they'd pay was because everyone was buying newspapers) pay for.

Is it weird or apt to say that newspapers and comic strips were so big, they were essentially the equivalent to the 70's-now manga industry, like how they had similar team/production structures? Also why again did Japan keep print media popular regarding news while America just jumped to TV and never looked back? Was it because of CNN and 24 hour news cycle?

Japan has been about the only holdout regarding all physical media. There's been a bump from younger people discovering vinyl, cassettes and compact discs over here, but who knows if it will just be a fad or whether they retain a lifetime appreciation for the formats. The move to digital, faster internet speeds and smart phones providing 24/7 access has killed most interest in the printed page. Going back to Japan, and trying to not go on to the ever present rage fest of east vs west, I think most anons here overlook the cultural differences. Figure King is a toy and hobby magazine that is still in print in Japan. A japanese person pretty much said "fuck off and buy your own" to a western fan, when Japanese dude was asked to post more pages apart from a page that he uploaded to Twatter. Since most westerners don't speak or read Japanese, they won't buy an issue if someone uploads scans of the segments they want. Not a surprise that CD sales began to drop off at the literal turn of the century, just as faster speeds further enabled peer to peer sharing. Not their fault for being young, but anons also don't know there were more books related to strips and cartooning than actual comics in libraries, 20-25 years ago. Couldn't even find the heavy hitters like DKR and Watchmen back then at our central library with 8 floors. People will say how great the 90s were but most of their actions contributed to tossing away every vestige of prior decades; often in pursuit of short term monetary gain. And here we are.

For a look inside the world of "photo-realistic" comic artists, read
https://www.amazon.com/Cartoon-County-Father-Friends-Make-Believe/dp/0374298556
All those artists lived fairly close together in Connecticut and this book is by the son of John Cullen Murphy, who did "Big Ben Bolt" and then "Prince Valiant".

Reading in mass transit you use to go to school and work is very significant aspect of Japanese culture. That is the opposite of America where you have to drive a car everywhere

remember that america had more comic genres than superhero, once upon a time

>>150462011
might be damian grey
>>
>>150462627
Yeah, if you wanted to read different genre you pretty much had to find non american comics to read.
>>
>>150463426
Not really. Pretty much every non-Big two publisher is doing non-superhero books.
>>
>>150463548
but the first thing you think of with western comics is superheroes. we used to have romance comics, horror comics and all sorts.

that's what watchman was making fun of, with how every comic book in that universe was about pirates.
>>
>>150463727
>but the first thing you think of with western comics is superheroes.
Maybe "American" comics. You likely aren't Japanese peasant from the 1800s who only knows of the west as a vague foreign place. the whole "western" world isn't some abstract concept to you, no one thinks of European comics being superheroes.
And either way, you really don't need to look far to find non-cape American comics.

>>150464184
All westerners are Dutch speaking people.
