I'm going to be storytiming my fantasy comic Oi! Tales of Bardic Fury, two chapters at a time. It's set in 360 AD Ireland and follows the story of a bard-in-training who gets sent to a tiny village by the sea called Oi that never heard music before. These pages were drawn in 2013.Enjoy!
>>150452632Chapter 1: Stoned at the Rock Concert
>>150452632uh? somewhat remind me of galko despite this being older
>>150453027>galkoWhen I google this, it's a SOL school manga about a gyaru and glasses girl. Is that the galko you refer to?
>>150452804It's nice how here they look like filthy hostile hicks, and they'll gradually soften as they warm up to wee Bryan.
End of chapter 1>>150453098I spent a long time drawing this page. Now my crowd scenes are way worse and lazier. I have to spend more time on new comic pages I make, it's worth it.
>>150453134>you have to earn a nameServius is cool.
>>150453060ye, that cover reminds me of covers/pics that mangaka did
>Chapter 2: The Selkie Blues>>150453158In hindsight he'd probably be a better MC than the MC. >>150453181Cool I'll have to check other out
Brb, will finish storytiming the rest of the chapter in a bit
Nice work anon, interesting story and setting and nice art.
>>150454259Thanks
End of Chapter 2. Thanks for reading!
I like the Druid's 'meta' comments.
Are we ever gonna leave the beach, bro?
>>150456526Yes, the next arc is set in a cave and Tir na Nog and goes on forever.
Bump
Basically, it's shit.BUT it's by a /co/ user so worthy of support all the way!
>>150457554I did my best lol
>>150455365sex with seal girls
Cool comic but can you go back to drawing porn plesae
Ooh. I think it'd be fun to include a recommended album or playlist in the top post, to listen as we read along. I'm listening to a prog rock and acid rock playlist, but it'd probably be cool to listen to one that includes Irish and Gaelic music selections.Cool comic, dude. Thanks for the storytime. Rock on.
>>150452632Nice to see you again!
>>150459032Red Roses For Me by the Pogues and Sinead O'Connor Irish language trad and Luke Kelly>>150458492I do that mostly as commissions now but I'm planning to draw some Danas and Rhiannons in October when I get time.>>150459087Hello!
>>150459152My current Dana Bas folder is only at 61 images, need those numbers to get pumped up
I've been thinking I should try my hand at making a webcomic. I want to get better at drawing and figure a regular project that isn't animation would do me good. I wanted to ask if you had any advice for starting out? Like what did you with you'd known before starting Oi?
>>150459817>plan it out, write scripts>don't make it up as you go along>show don't tell>avoid big blocks of dialogue>have a clear direction and plan>the best way to get better is to draw more pages>sometimes you have to make a lot of bad art to get to the good art>make the characters interesting, especially the leads>get good at drawing black and white before attempting full color>start with 1-2 page short comics before attempting a grand epic narrative This is my advice for you, based on my own past mistakes and experience. Good luck! >>150459745I'm considering making a dana spinoff where she tries to summon a demon but gets stuck in tir na nog instead and has to get home- kind of a dark psychedelic celtic Alice in Wonderland starring dana, but i'm not sure. I love the character but maybe she's meant to only exist in pinups.
>>150459959>get good at drawing black and white before attempting full colorThat's a good idea, thank you! I think I'm gonna do a couple of art studies before making a start. I've gotta get more comfortable going from sketch to final line.
>>150459152hypothetically if I commissioned you enough would you draw a new selkie original character who canonically loves me and me alone?
>>150460309Most definitely >>150460285Make it happen
I need more people to read this
>>150459959How much did you have planned out at the start? Good planning sounds important but I also get the impression some people end up spending so much time planning and worldbuilding that they never start on whatever idea they have.
>>150460697I'm going to storytime it 2 chapters at a time in the coming days so maybe more people will. However the art is rough, especially volume 1, so I can't blame them if they don't. >>150461466There's definitely such a thing as too much planning and world building but then you can do the opposite and do what I did and also isn't good- having a vague plan and idea then charging forward in a vague direction and writing each chapter stream of conscious with no finished script. Find the middle ground between those extremes, and always start with a finished script so your story doesn't go off the rails. I say this advice so others don't make the mistakes I did. The Banshee Vale arc for example was originally planned to be 3 chapters under 100 pages when I conceptualized it, but then I kept going and going and cramming more ideas I had in to it. Then once I got to the climax it took a long time to wrap everything up and tie it all together. Don't make these mistakes, script is key!
>>150463204(Continued)Here's some random facts about oi volume 1>I had no clear structure for where each chapter in the beginning was going other then it would end with each POV character lead of the chapter joining Bryan's band>the episode format was inspired by the show Skins-each episode had a different POV lead, with the lead character of the previous episode becoming a cameo or secondary character in the next episode. At the time, I thought this story structure was amazing and wanted to copy it- in hindsight id make volume 1 more traditional and follow Bryan's pov the entire time like a more standard comic story. >Rhiannon is a colead and I didn't even think of her until chapter 2, that's why she's nowhere to be seen in chapter 1 even though the bard showing up to town isn't an event her character would ever miss>oi is set in a fictional version of the "real" world, so I didn't have to do much world building, I just researched history. In hindsight I think setting it in the real world instead of a fictional fantasy world was a good decision and grounds the story, especially when it gets crazier later>when I came up with it, I had no idea how I'd resolve the aideen/bryan/Rhiannon marriage triangle. I only added it in as it seemed like it would lead to interesting drama going forward.
>>150453990imagine the smell
>>150452703Servius met him for five seconds and is already sick of his shit.
>>150466175This is not terribly different from how a young mechanical engineer is regarded by experienced line workers in a manufacturing company. They're not wrong, but some of them can be even bigger dicks about it than Servius.
>>150452632Ey, nice to see you again man! I really like your stuff.
>>150466175I wanted to make Bryan a character who starts a dweeby loser and eventually becomes cool. In hindsight I made him too dweeby, he should have started out slightly cooler and with more redeeming qualities.>>150466246Yeah he's just an annoying noob.>>150466704Yo!
>>150452727huh, this looks a lot less anime than it apparently later became. Pity, I kinda like it like this
>>150453861is that servus again? Grew a beard right quick, didn't he?
>>150468042He's Sicilian! You're right though, it's a major mistake i never realized until now considering the time frame of the story.>>150467934I tried to get more technical and cleaner but lost originality in the process. I didn't know what I was doing at all in volume 1, which lead to more SOVL art. I'm trying to get back to a more original art style for the next one shot im working on. Alot of it also has to do with inking with a brush, then switching to pens. Brush inking gave it a lot of unique character. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20
