ITT: TMNT Ripoffs/Copycats
>>150454299here you go
>>150454299Better toys though
>>150454746You forgot Gargoyles.
>>150454746This'd be more useful if the names were listed.
>>150454746kek, but there is more ripoffs than this
>>150454299TURLY GANG!
>>150454746I will earn my place on this list I swear to you all I will.
>>150454746you’re gonna need a bigger list
>>150455225I've always wanted a whole channel devoted to tmnt rip-offs. And that was a collage not a list. This is a list.Mummies AliveExtreme DinosaursMighty DucksC.O.W. Boys of Moo MesaBiker Mice from MarsBattletoadsRoad RoversSWAT KatsCaptain Simian and the Space MonkeysStone ProtectorsToxic CrusadersKung-Fu Dino PosseBucky O'HareGargoylesCyboarsThe Adventures of T-Rex
>>150455358I did a new and improved list with more ripoffsThe Adventures of T-RexAqua Teen Hunger Force (spoofing it)Avenger PenguinsBattletoadsBiker Mice from MarsBucky O'Hare and the Toad Wars!Butt-Ugly MartiansCaptain Simian and the Space MonkeysChallenge of the GoBotsCreepy CrawlersCyboarsDarkstalkersDinosaucersExtreme DinosaursGargoylesKung Fu Dino PosseLoonatics UnleashedMagical Super TrollsMega BabiesMighty Ducks: The Animated SeriesMummies Alive!Road RoversStone ProtectersStreet SharksSuper Duper SumosSWAT KatsToxic CrusadersWild West C.O.W-Boys of Moo MesaHonorable mention to Samurai Pizza Cats (even though it’s /a/)Any more with that trope I missed
>>150455715GoBots and Dinosaucers seems more like Transformers rip-offs. Best to keep the main group small.
>>150455358>>150455763How come nobody ever mentions the comic rip-offs in these discussions? Kung Fu Kangaroos, Adolescent Radioactive Black Belt Hamsters, Geriatric Gangrene Jiujitsu Gerbils, Cy-Boars, etc. There are some that never made it past toyline or movie stage either like Warriors of Virtue and Snaliens.
>>150456088>Adolescent Radioactive Black Belt Hamstersno way
>>150456088Because the comics never lasted as long, didn't get toys, and cartoonfags are the majority of the board
>>150456174Most of the comic derivatives existed BEFORE the Mirage show happened IIRC so as a result they're more or less lampooning Mirage TMNT's breakout success (while trying to cash in on its success which led to a glut of crappy black and white titles)
I'm surprised the Venture Bros never did their own take. Maybe mix it with rap. Have Shredder be a Suge Knight stand in.
>>150454299Tbh street sharks are better than the turtles. All TMNT has is just inducing April O'Neill
>>150454299What constitutes a TMNT rip off? A band of 4 or 5 crime fighting animals of the same species?
>>150454746Swat Katz and Bucky O'Hare aren't TMNT clones. Gargoyles absolutely is though.
>>150454746Never heard of the Extreme Dinosaurs, Captain Simian, the cowboy thing, whatever that ugly monstrosity is on the bottom left, or the two on the bottom right below Road Rovers. I'm 90% certain that the thing under Swat Kats is Toxic Avenger, a property that I've otherwise had zero exposure to aside from the fact that the Angry Video Game Nerd is a fan.The rest I have some passing familiarity with, even if I didn't really watch any of them.
>>150455763athf is a tmnt ripoff?
>>150456217>Sakai drew this>Ends up creating something that gets integrated into TMNT lorePottery.
>>150456608>3 to 5 thematically unified non-human protags.>human helper/confidant/sidekick (optional)>an evil empire/organization/team that is regularly up to some kind of evil scheme that needs to be thwarted or directly seeking to attack the team of heroes, usually with some monster of the week>bad guys have ties to the heroes' past/origin (optional)>attitude/coolness of some variety strongly featured as a selling point>toyetic designs and merch to go with it>catchy themesong
>>150454299>>150457147I am actually planning a show concept that spoofs this entire subgenreAny notable things from all the shows >>150455763 to try to incorporate, cuz NO RIPOFF IS SAFE
... Does this count as a TMNT rip-off or a Super Sentai/Power Rangers rip-off.
>>150454299I remember having a Street Sharks VHS as a young lad. It had a Sailor Moon ad in the previews.
>>150457220Here’s the concept BTW>4 non human characters>live in some old dude’s basement with their sensei who’s really some homeless man who can’t do fight moves>they also have a neighbor child who is the only person who knows they’re good guys>the villains are a slightly insane scientist, a psychotic deranged boss dude in cheap samurai costume, a right hand man to the samurai who he uses as a slave and a monster/spirit who has ties to the heroes>the heroes constantly torture the dude living above them and drive him to the brink of madness and blow up and destroy his stuff >the villains send in huge monsters to kill everyone and destroy the “nonspecific town”>the heroes power up, use their generic superpowers and kill the monsters>the boss gets mad that his creation died and yells at his employees and threatens to fire/kill/do worse to themTHE END
>>150454746Extreme dinosaurs had a kino intro and that cow show had an awesome arcade game at my pizza place. I miss toppers.
>>150455763I don't recognize most of this list. But, calling Aqua Teen a TMNT ripoff casts doubt onto the rest of this list.
>>150454746Battletoads is one of the most overrated franchises with only one good game
>>150457880The arcade game?
>>150457880It's entire legacy is one game anyone cares about that's only known for being really hard, it's more nostalgic than praised Overrated games would be SF Third Strike, Tony Hawk, Sonic Adventure, Mario 64, games endlessly praised but aren't very good
>>150457299Both. It's in league with Dino Squad in the pocket genre that is "TMNT + Power Rangers clones". Monkey Team is atleast a much more fun watch.
>>150454746I wouldn't really include Bucky O'Hare or Swat Kats as they're closer to traditional furry cartoons than the "Strange heroes living in secrecy" archetype.
>>150454746Missing Gargoyles and Dinosaucers. I also wouldn't include whatever that thing is between Road Rovers and Bucky O'hare as its clearly a 2010s era cartoon from the art style.
>>150455358If you're including Toxic Crusaders you should probably throw in Swamp Thing.
>>150456301The Venture Brothers creators are very solidly early to mid Gen-X at the latest. I honestly think the GI Joe parodies were done by younger writers because Doc Hammer et. al. strike me as too old for it. TMNT is solidly the Xennial franchise. The Mirage comics appealed to Gen-Xers but no one born before 1978 was watching the TMNT cartoon past the five part special.
>>150456608Group of thematic heroes.Single human sidekick.Heroes nominally have to live in secrecy because of their appearance.
>>150458594You're saying "Kung Fu Dino Posse" owes nothing to continuing popularity of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?
>>150456217This isn't as much a ripoff as it is a lampoon. Sakai is friend with Eastman and Laird.
>>150457299It's more sentai than TMNT, but there's unintentionally a ton of thematic crossover between the two.
>>150454746You forgot a few.
I remember this Japanese animated one about dinosaur heroes that owned a nightclub as cabaret singers or something. Wasn't great, but the dinosaur designs were cute.
>>150455358>I've always wanted a whole channel devoted to tmnt rip-offs.Back in the days of 4chan streams and lax copyright strikes your wish would be granted as soon as said.
For me it's Tank Vixens
>>150457880I wouldn't call it overrated. I'm pretty sure most people just know it after it became a joke/meme and anyone who played the SNES game just remember it because of the jet bike level and acknowledge the rest of the game was nothing special outside of that.I hope Battletoads/Double Dragon is the one good game you're referring to, because it actually is a fairly good beat em up.
>>150455358>Kung-Fu Dino Posse"I've never heard of that one, wonder if it's any good. I love discovering 80s-90s cartoons I missed out on">it's 2010s slop and apparently rather bad slop at thatAh, fuck off
>>150457147You forgot the Food of Choice (not pizza)
>>150459862https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSoEv8L8Tf0
>>150454746
>>150454746mighty ducks was the best of the groupI liked Moo Mesa
>>150456217>those anime referenceswhew lad now THAT is a time machine.
How da fuck are the Swat Kats a ripp off the TMNT??? >2 of them.>They are not the only cats.>Most of the time they fly around in a jet.The only thing comparable is the style. If to be honest they are more a Rip of GI joe then the TMNT.
>>150455358>>150455358>>150455763CROCO SOS bros?CROCO BROS ASSEMBLEhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5H5-ELjJFE
>>150458961>>150457103He only did the cover>>150460896Yeah, Mai the Psychic Girl was in most parodies at the time IIRC simply because her manga was translated and options were limited
>>150461464I like the Angry Beavers episode that just swings from Astroboy to Sailor Moon to Whatever OVA The Video Had
>>150454299>street sharts then>street sharks now
>>150460759FUCK. You' are absolutely right! That's a major key component. They have to have a signature food.
>>150457846It’s honestly more of a parody of that trope
>>150457147>>150460759Is picture related a TMNT ripoff? It fits all of the criteria except for the human sidekick part.
>>150457600>nonspecific townXD
>>150463025Was japan aware enough of tmnt to bother to make copy...cats? I always just assumed that since this was an anime it was just a coincidence, not mention that there's barley anything comparable between the 2 becides animal people.
>>150462647>muscular male sharkEwww
>>150463025>>150463130On the one hand, Kyatto Ninden Teyandee is just blatantly a ripoff and cash-in of SD Gundam which had started in 1988. On the other, TMNT had properly reached Japan at this point so the fact that the title characters do actually serve pizza wasn't just a localization change. You could say it's fuzzy
>>150463179
>>150463230CARLOS!!!
>>150463230I know one thing for certain: Francine was the best character.
>>150463130>>150463230The dub absolutely takes the piss out of TMNT. It in the theme song for crying out loud
>>150463162Shark's a shark
>>150463414Yeah, I know, I was obsessed this show. However, the show didn't start dubbed, so the question was: was the Japanese team inspired by tmnt?
>>150463479I feel something that's often ignored in comparisons like this is that it's not about sharks not being dangerous, but about sharks being too stupid to be really dangerous. They're efficient predators for sure, but that's literally all they are. They don't think about things, they just see something that looks/smells like food and take a bite. Dolphins on the other hand are smart enough to do shit just for fun, whether that's playing games or torturing other marine life in a variety of ways.So it's less like the shark being a kawaii uguu femboy vs the dolphin being a sexual predator, and more like the shark being a big scary himbo who is really more interested in his next meal than in fucking anyone up vs the dolphin being a sexual predator.
>>150454746that’s a lotta ripoffs
