Even adjusted for inflation, the Disney Renaissance films were all orders of magnitude cheaper to produce than even some of the shittiest big studio CGI-animated films and the animation there is inarguably beautiful. With modern tools it is indeed much cheaper and faster to make fluid and excellent-looking 2D animation.The Day The Earth Blew Up isn't a movie I think is particularly great in most regards but the animation is absolutely fantastic and it was both very cheaply made as a streaming movie and produced from start to finish in under a year. 2D is not hamstrung by anything except studios' refusal to actually utilize it.
