I think they COULD have had the "she ghosted him" timeskip, IF THEY'D ALLOWED CALLUM BE ANGRY.
You could've done "she left him there because she loved him and didn't want to drag him along on a dangerous revenge quest, especially one where she was fairly sure she would kill the guy at the end, and she wanted to keep Callum safe and pure." If they'd allowed Callum be angry.
They could've done a simmering anger from him, and her being defensive, upset with herself for hurting him but still believing "no I don't want Callum by my side if I get the chance to kill Viren, because that fucker needs to die and I don't want Callum there to see it." You could've done something with both of them eventually realizing they still one another too much to keep at arm's length, rediscovering what made them fall in love, moving past the bad shit that happened.
But you can't do that if Callum is shut up mid-sentence when she came back, and never given a chance to be angry. That's emotional dishonesty.

The crew (possibly correctly) thought they were going to have The Moonlighting Problem.
In Moonlighting the two main characters bickered and came from very different worlds, but their "we fight but clearly care for one another" relationship made for great romantic tension... and once the writers pulled the trigger and had the main characters kiss, everyone agrees the show went downhill, because the writers didn't know what to do next.
With Rayla and Callum ending S3 as a couple, it would've been hard to keep up the "will they end up together" tension, what with them being... y'know... together.
Frankly I think the correct move would've been to keep the Romeo and Juliet angle, writing it so they realize that most of the world would be against their relationship. But for some reason retardation the crew wanted race-relations between humans and elves to get better so fast the damn Elven Queen ended up marrying The Top Human General. As an alternate source of conflict, having Rayla fuck up the relationship on a revenge quest, leaving Callum behind "for his own good" could have worked. But it didn't, and fucking up the good vibes between the leads while having the B-Plot turn their "star crossed lovers" romance into nothing special pretty much fucked the whole damn show.
