>>150474935I always respect his design, it was the first 90s edge I was exposed to
>>150475034Same,i got invested in reading his comics after seeing some youtube shorts about him and they were the pretty good for what they were. Edge kino with just the right amount that it doesn't feel too much.
>>150474935I have an IQ above 60 so no.
>>150474935The nostalgia goggles are thick, and it's cool it's still ongoing, good for Todd, but it is a boring book.
>>150474935I'd fuck him.
>>150477023As the undead zombie or after he gains access to his human form again?
>>150477088Undead zombie.
>>150474935Spawn's biggest issue is being all style and no substance. The HBO cartoon effectively covers all the notable quality stories the character's had in his 30+ year history. At this point though they're really just spinning Al's wheels, and I dont see any means to remedy that. Alot of 90's capes suffer from this same problem.
>>150477193Understandable,it is his best look
Main problem with Spawn is that it went through a formative phase where all the elements of the lore were established and the main premise of his conflict was set up and all that ... but then instead of converting that into a proper status quo so they can spin yarns all day about the villain gallery and so on ... they decided to making it an ongoing story. Now you'd think that's the correct way to do stuff, but in this case it's not since the ongoing story started to be progressively more lame as it went on. It suffers from the X-Files effect where the main issue of the comic/character is resolved multiple times then it just kind of keeps going and it apparently wasn't resolved, then it's resolved again, then not, etc....Since the setting is interesting enough it should've just become a "perpetual present" kind of comic book.
>>150474935What did Hellboy do better?
>>150474935I liked the design and the occult setting. Had some cool toys too. >>150477667But basically this.
>>150477695Get a better film adaption. I honestly think the 90's Spawn movie was such a confused, under budgeted, poorly written mess it tanked Spawn's street cred and he's never really recovered since. Meanwhile HB can coast off the two Deltoro pictures and the animated films forever more before new fans actually dive into the Mignola books.
>>150477667>>150477716Did any alternative 90's heroes seriously manage to escape that problem? It seems like all the ones who did either wound up in strange new directions (savage dragon), died off (Pitt, Shadowhawk, Witchblade, etc), or get repeatedly hard rebooted to an ever dwindling audience.
Personally i liked the animated series, and comparing it to the comics,it did a good work of streamlining the best aspects of Spawn to create a coherent adaptation that is miles better than the source material. My only criticism of it would be that you never see Spawn fighting for real.
>>150474935bump
>>150474935Yes
>>150477728It’s more subtle
>>150474935He's cool
In theory
>>150474935>all style>0 substance>the best thing about it are the toysIt's basically the Saint Seiya of capeshit. Yes, i'm a spic
>>150480933Never overstuff your display shelves
>>150474935>couldn't shapeshift to his old former self so he turns into a white man insteadPoor Simmons.
>Todd attempts to pull another Spawn-like series in the 2000's>MC's origin story also involves cuckoldrySomething tells me that Todd's daughter is not actually his and he knows it
>>150474935I read the entirety of it and was surprised with how it took nearly 2 decades of irl publication to address a plothole the size of a moon crater (why the throne of hell was empty after Cogliostro backstabbed Simmons and took the throne for himself)
>>150480998the filename>why_Ghost_Rider_is_OP_in_Marvel_Rivals.jpg
>>150480933>McFarlane, like Kurumada, can't write for shit>TV shows did a lot of favors into making it something decent>Side materials are usually betterDamn, you are right
>>150474935No
Have the modern issues from the main comics have gotten any better? I stopped reading around resurrection
>>150477695Quality over quantity. It helped that Hellboy wasn't monthly, so the stories are more focused without needless throw away issues that are filler. It was obvious from the start that Mignola put more thought and research into his stories. Spawn issues 8 & 9 really stand out as what could have been if Todd wasn't so egotistical. Quite the self-own when he admitted to not reading books in that old interview with the Comics Journal. It's even more bizarre because he went to college. There is such an abundant amount of literature and research concerning myth, legend, folk tales, religions, the occult, and paranormal encounters, that would have given Spawn more of a grander scope and atmosphere from its inception. It was the adversaries that made Hellboy memorable, as I felt HB was starting to get stale as a character for me. Lost interest when Mignola stepped away from doing interior art. I don't care at all about the films from either property. I think the films were wastes of time and energy for both McFarlane and Mignola. As the elder statesmen of comics have said, comics don't need films to legitimize the medium. Still wish Todd had kept drawing instead of becoming a businessman.
>>150477695>>150485386Hellboy and Spawn are completely different animals. Any similarities are extremely superficial.Hellboy is inspired by Lovecraft and old timey occult, pulp serials, folklore and steampunk stuff with a bit of cartoon humor thrown in. It has a very specific vibe that's well defined and unique.Spawn on the other hand is very much capeshit at its core. There's Spider-Man in there, Batman but most importantly Swamp Thing. People tend to overlook that connection. A man is dead, comes back in a monstrous form and given dominion over an area and has to "police" it. He still feels human for a while but that starts slipping. Also struggling with competing primordial forces. Other inspirations include Fincher's Se7en and the serial killer movie genre. Also juggalos. Best thing that could've happened to Spawn is they could've fast tracked the character to be a neutral protector of Earth (or at least part of the Earth) and he has to fend off forces of Heaven & Hell (and others) etc... they kind of did it in the comics but it was just convoluted and a lot of back and forth.
>>150474935
>>150487256>There's Spider-Man in there, Batman but most importantly Swamp Thingand Venom, which I don't know if counts because he is also a McFarlane co-creation
>>150485386>the films were a waste of timeThe first two Hellboy films garnered a shit ton of fans and are kino, wtf are you talking about
>>150474935Spawn would require a reboot to get good, honestly. Or getting an equivalent of Ultimate/Absolute comic run
>>150489285yeah the lore is so inconsistent that no one would give damn if that happened>Jesus was a vampire>ackshually Jesus is a non-binary primordial deity that predates god and satan
>>150489320>K7-Leetha wasn't suppose to be anything special compared to the other hellspawn symbiotes>Oops actually i lied, the suit is FAR ancient and it's also made out of original sin>Also it has an agenda of it's own by wanting to destroy everything and all that has happened was because of it's planLike i knew i was reading something that abides by the rules of cool, but sometimes it was hard not to roll my eyes
