Context: Area 41 is a government facility built on top of a maze, and specializes in weird shit. It's run by Veronica Cale, and their job is to contain, study, and weaponize this shit. The labyrinth that they found is also where they toss shit they don't know what to do with. In the upper levels of the facility they have Doctor Poison incarcerated, whom in this universe is sentient poisonous gas in a containment suit. You, by all rights, SHOULD be who they are making, marketing, and selling comics to. That would make sense. But its not the reality of the situation. The reality of the situation is that the comics industry is kept afloat by speculators who grab the special editions, first issues, crossover events, etc in numbers and then leave them in their plastic wrap and stick them in a vault for a future date when they will be "worth money". These people buy up comics in bulk as an investment for later resale. You, as a comic reader, care about whether these stories make sense, the art is appealing, and whether this is all good enough to keep reading. The speculator buyer doesn't give a shit about any of that, the actual quality of the pages inside of that floppy mean almost nothing to him. What matters is that this is a limited printing of a special version of the comic that had a different drawing on the front cover as a collector's item. So the quality of the experience is de-emphasized, and instead it encourages the company to come up with as many excuses to print 'special comics' worth collecting as possible. Batman #495 isn't sexy, its just another Batman comic. But "Batman: Subtitle" Issue #1? Speculators are already placing preorders. It doesn't MATTER if its not a standalone story and you have to have read Batman issues 450 - 494 for it to make sense, by relaunching it they have made more money even as they make the experience more convoluted.
