DC Comics is ending Green Arrow with December’s issue #31. And like with Birds of Prey, which is also ending in December, it doesn’t seem like it was entirely writer Chris Condon’s decision to wrap up the lauded title. Instead, as fellow DC writer Scott Snyder explained in a social post, the sales on the book were “unsustainable.”

“Issue thirty-one of GREEN ARROW will be my final issue on the title,” wrote Condon on BlueSky after DC’s December solicits dropped online. “It’s been fantastic to work with Montos, Buddy, Hass, Adriano, and Chris Rosa on the book. More than that, it’s been a dream to work on a character like Ollie for DC Comics. I’m bummed we have to end things here… But I’m fiercely proud of the work – especially this final issue. Thank you to all of the fans who have been reading month to month for your support. Like you, I can’t wait to see what comes next for the Emerald Archer.”

While Condon wasn’t specific about the exit, Snyder was. Responding to a post about the cancellation of the title that mused (with slightly saltier language) about why DC was ending “their best ongoing,” Snyder wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Decisions like these are above my paygrade, but the honest reason is that not enough of us were buying it. The sales numbers on GA were just unsustainable. It’s disappointing to everyone. But keeping it going means not being able to take other chances.”

Continuing on that bent, Snyder noted that fans should always order from a store before Final Order Cutoff (FOC), which is often a month or more before the issue actually hits stands. The reason? That lets the comic book stores know people want the book, but it also indicates whether the title is sustainable in the long run for the publisher, as well.

“We all assume if a series is critically well received or gets awards, it’s a high seller, but the opposite can be true,” Snyder continued. “For example, one of my favorite series ever, and in my opinion one of the best, Gotham Central was literally one of DC’s lower selling books during that period.”

Green Arrow, for what it’s worth, has run for a relatively long period of time for a modern DC comic book. It started with writer Joshua Williamson doing a more cosmic, Arrow-family-focused take on the book. Then Condon took over with Green Arrow #18 and brought the character back to street level, with grittier, social issue-focused mysteries.

Here’s the synopsis for Green Arrow #31, which will hit stores on December 24, 2025. The final issue will feature art by Osvaldo Pestana Montpeller, alongside words by Condon and a cover by Taurin Clarke.

Trouble in the family! After an explosive domestic squabble between a working father and a teenage daughter boils into the streets, the Emerald Archer must reckon with his past choices and experiences in order to provide a path forward for the two… and himself.

>Unsustainable” Sales Numbers
But that's the same for all comics except Batman, with the possible exception of Superman and Spiderman.
>>
>>150501629
It was extended from a 6 issue mini originally or something, no? Green Arrow's never been a big seller for them, I'm surprised the first new title for their Absolute run is a Green Arrow book

So comic books at DC require you to pre-order them or they will die? Didn't realize video games and comics were in the same boat.

This is a fucked up business model.

So why are people mourning Kirk then?

Literally no one except for Batman has sustainable comic sales, the entire fucking industry is unsustainable

DC (and probably Marlel too) puts massive weight on preorders, particularly first issue preorders. This is fucked up because it essentially means people need to buy the comic sight unseen, which in turn means quality of the comic is immaterial. The rational customer act is to wait until the comic is out, preferably until the first couple arcs are out, before buying, but if you do that the comic will be canceled.

Big surprise there. For all of /co/'s insistence how good this book was, it was really boring.
