>This beat Pokémon in the 2000s

HOW?!
>>
By what metric? Viewership?
>>
>>150516247

Apparently it was viewership
>>
Orange island reruns
>>
>>150516081
Pokemania ended around ~2000 so yeah that tracks.
>>
>>150516081
Early 2000s was the sleepy era before Sinnoh kino

gacha and casino gambling targeted for kids was not a thing back then
collecting shit was a thing but not as strong as collecting baseball cards as a whole
beanie babies were clearly targeted for adults
tamagotchis were a tech fad that came and went
cartoons had their social phases
LEGO just rolled out Bionicle and they were almost giving up until it started doing franchise sets from Star Wars or Harry Potter
>>
>>150516081
My area didn't have WB on rabbit ear tv. I'm assuming the same is true for other people. ABC was probably more common
>>
>>150516081
It was a pretty comfy and funny show. Also in the 2000s, Pokemon was already on the bad seasons, the show lost a lot of what was special about it after the first Pokemon League concluded and Orange Islands began.

same, I didn't start getting Pokemon episodes on the reg until the fad was damn near over. I had to buy those VHS tapes to watch it with any regularity.

But also Weekenders fucking ruled.
>>
Lots of folks act like people were stupid back then for thinking
>pokemon is just a passing fad
But it really kinda was. Like The Simpsons it just stayed popular forever but never hit that same high ever again. It wasn't until the late 2000s that it was seen as unanimously loved again.
>>
>>150516081
>we had one episode get more viewers than a rerun of pokemon on a weekday during school hours
Did they try to capitalize on this incredible success story

>Beat Pokémon in viewership the 2000s
>One of the few DTVA shows that got a full DVD release

What went right WeekenderChads?
>>
Hey Weekenders was cool.
>>
>>150516081
It's like the 2000s anime "boom". Things have their natural high and then die down. Most series and things that the current "fans" like are done or dead so the current wave is about to decline as well. There's been a big investment in korean media as speculation points that were things are heading next.

I had it on a scrambled channel with all the colours inverted. Pikachu was blue to me and seeing him yellow was weird for a long time.

Reminder that KidsWB burned through so many Pokemon episodes in such a short time that they had to do reruns for a while before 4kids got to Johto. Plus, Tracey was a bad stand-in for Brock. His Marill was carrying his (lack thereof) character hard.
>>
>>150519172
Blame western tards in general for that one. They told the nips the american's were going to think brock was racist.

I appreciate you Tish/Velma fags have different tastes, and no they're not even bad tastes, but you're all just objectively wrong.

Lor/Daphne > Tish/Velma.

Because pokemon sucks
>>

If it means anything I like Spinelli more than Gretchen. Tish over Lor, and for Velma/Daphne it's a tie. Nu-Velma has soured me on her a bit and Daphne has always had her charms.

Comfy stimulating show for people with adhd, also Pokémon the anime was kinda boring and had an ongoing story that was hard to keep up with.

I looked it up and the episode that The Weekenders beat was some forgettable filler episode in the Orange Islands where Ash helps a cowboy with his herd of Magnemite

Pokemon gets old after awhile, it's crazy people are still obsessed with it.
>>
>>150521586
Anon even at the peak Pokemon revival period of the early 2010s it wasn't close to Pokemania. Pokemon's still popular yes, but nothing really compares to that period from roughly 1998 - 2001.
>>
>>
>>150516081
Children's attention span can only last for so long, and Pokemania started and peaked in the late 90s, so it makes sense that The Weekenders would have moments of higher viewership compared to the Pokemon anime
>>
>>
I was one of those kids watching this over Pokemon at the time and having my taste in women irreparably altered by exposure to Lor.

I rewatched the entire series at the start of last year, it really held up nicely. Tish is still the best girl.

>Comes out just a couple of years before the California beach aesthetic stops being popular in the mainstream
>Gets almost completely forgotten as a result despite once being a ratings magnet
We should have just kept this aesthetic popular. I don't care if California isn't really like this anymore, it's maximum comfy.
>>
>>150521586
There was a phase where people stopped giving a shit, we call that gen 3.

Oh look. Someone with critical thinking skills. Allow my autism to explain this further to the zoomers who are too young to rember: One of the only reasons this was documented at all was because Pokemania was almost 3 years old in the US at the time, so announcing that a show had finally outperformed it after FIFTY FOUR weeks at the top was good headline material. TV guide opted for the particularly flashy splash of: "The Show That Killed Pokemon". Cheeky.

A little more research shows that, around the time the article came out, Pokemon was several episodes its "Orange Islands" season—basically a filler arc that takes place between the events of the first two games, the latter of which hadn't even dropped yet. In addition to that, two major events had occured in the show that REALLY pissed off a lot of fans: one is that Ash lost the Pokemon League before getting anywhere near the finals, and two was that fan-favorite main cast member Brock was termporarily replaced by Tracy, who was literally nobody's favorite.

However, this isn't to downplay The Weekenders. It was a great show with a good vibe that was rising in popularity—it had only just debuted a few months earlier, and it embraced the zeitgeist of late 90s western tween culture in a way Pokemon was incapable. But this was basically a case of a fresh race horse breifly overtaking an exhausted juggernaut during a vulnerable moment. Pokemon eventually reclaimed that top spot and is still in our collective consciousness over a quarter-century later. But by the same time next year, The Weekenders was cancelled.

Ugh, you again.

California has always been and will always be great if you have money. There's a reason almost all entertainment execs choose to set up shop over there and won't go anywhere else.
>>
>>150524287
>>150524580
This plus it's actually been getting better again recently. Not even entirely sure why but it's like the Covid years made everything hit such a low point that people decided to clean things up again.

>I don't care if California isn't really like this anymore, it's maximum comfy.
California is fucking huge there are always different parts with different vibes. Also I doubt you've ever been, especially not frequently enough to be able to pass objective judgment on its change over time. Why do people with small brains insist on making the world small enough to match? Luckily, my brain isn't small enough to fall for it.

Anon Rocket Power came out before Weekenders and was honestly a holdout just because of Nick's bizarre airing schedule. When it ended in 2006 it was pretty much the last California beach thing standing.
