>Wastes 300M in The Electric State>Somehow cannot afford a 2D adult animated show that mixes live-action, stop-motion and cgiI don't even like Hirsch but what kind of logic is this?
netflix sucks
>>150529034The Electric State didn't even have a narrative. Who the fuck thought it would be a good idea to make an adaptation of it, let alone spend $300,000,000 million to make one?
>>150529034Animation always gets the short end of the stick in corporate priorities, that is why the moment Netflix had financial struggles the Animation division was the first to go so now they just license other studio's works like K-POP Demon Hunters.>>150529189Netflix
>>150529034For a moment there I almost thought you were talking about Electric City (the one with Tom Hanks).
>>150529034Sucks for everybody hired for this project, but Netflix did nothing wrong. Alex Hirsch should've known better than to think this being his passion project would excuse him from spending WAYYY too long in development compared to his Netflix Animation peers. Also animation is always given less priority over live-action works, no matter how generic and uninspired the latter may be. The average person truly does not care about 'cartoons' like /co/ would like to believe, so I won't fault these major companies for being so hesitant to invest in as many animated series as they do live-action ones.
>>150530152Love how this bg feels actually "lived in".
>>150529034Why does everything have to look so goddamn ugly?!
>>150530152>passion projectThis is just Gravity Falls 2 but with swears with Wendy and genderbent Mabel as mcs
>>150529189It does have narrative but not one Netflix can market.Save brotherCommercialism sucksDrones suckInternet sucks
>>150530637It's kinda sad that even with more creative freedom and the chance to make an adult cartoon finally, those were the best character archetypes he could come up with. I wonder if the series premise would've at least made up for the unremarkable main cast.
>>150530152People like animation, they just don't like boring modern animation.
>>150530684What was the story anyway?
>>150530789idk
>>150530789Brother & sister got taken into social services because their drone pilot mother was addicted to the stuff they ran through the drones during second US civil war in late 70s.The brother was the only kid that survived to someone previously connected to the drone grid and when mother was an addict. That means he might be the bridge needed for the creepy hive mind to awaken. As Pacifica collapses into anarchy and drone-zombies from 1996 onward, the girl is met by the brother in a drone. She drives to save his emancipated biological form.A government agent tries hunting them down so the drone network doesn’t get them. Right before he can intercept them he’s killed by one of the creepy gestalt hive mind monsters.Kids paddle away on kayak/boat. Drone body left behind.
>>150529034What's weirder is the whole hush-hush situation around this show. No official title ever revealed, no confirmation of its cancellation either. It's this big elephant in the room nobody in the industry is allowed to discuss and we only know of due to leaks. With how Alex loves to bite the hands that feeds you'd think he would be going on rants of his cancelled project and how "corpos are always fucking me over", but there's no word about this.
>>150531308That's pretty common practice actually. Loads of film/TV projects get shelved and never see the light of day. The only reason we're more aware of the recent cases are thanks to leaks. UAHP likely never had a final title because Hirsch, being the perfectionist he's always been, took too damn long to get production going and reach the point where that working title would need to be replaced by something Netflix could publicly announce. If this was years earlier, Hirsch might've complained about Netflix's treatment of his project and Shion's show, but I think he's since come to the realization that he really isn't as untouchable as he might've once felt back when he was one of the youngest TV showrunners in the biz. He doesn't bite the hand that feeds him as much nowadays. Notice how much quieter he's been about Disney.
>>150531425It was called Lighthouse Bluff
>>150531425>Notice how much quieter he's been about Disney.Yeah it was weird about him being silent on the recent Kimmel thing and the cases of Disney banning the Moon Girl episode and forcing to remove the trans storyline in Win or Lose
>>150531308it's the NDA's, violating one is bound to screw you over, people tend to think the worst that can happen is blacklisting which I suppose is true cuz who'd wanna work with someone that breaks a contract, but I've signed these things before and big studios usually account for monetary damages too. One contract I had signed before said up to a million dollars if I had violated it. Regardless of if it's a cancelled project only someone dumb or with nothing to lose takes a gamble on ruining their life over a cartoon
>>150532114Pretty sure that was the name of the setting and one of the episodes. The series(?) as a whole was still under the working title Untitled Alex Hirsch Project.

>>150531235I don't find this interesting and I'm hoping it has a unique exciting visual style to compensate for it
>>150534123Was this real?!
>>150531235Thank you. Idgi
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUUzgKTYE84
>>150531235Wow, did you really miss that the brother isn't a normal human but actually is the hive mind's biological son/incarnation in the first place?
>>150535979It’s ambiguous, so it should be left for the reader to decide. And not the summary.
>>150534356>>150534709i'll save you the hassle of why you won't like it:The sister/female character talks about her being gay and resenting some dudes in her life
>>150532911That fuckass haircut is enough reason to be relieved this never made it to air
>>150536233It's not ambiguous at all
>>150534486Heh nah, just something he made in college for laughs I think
>>150530625American setting
>>150529034OP pic looks comfy asl
>>150529034>>150530152I don't think Hirsch has any idea just what the hell he is trying to make. He is just wanting to make a...something. He has no concrete idea or story, he just wants something that is animated and has some stop motion in it too. Kind of shows that he must have really relied on his writers for Gravity Falls.
>>150531425I have worked on a film and two tv productions that were never completed. A lot of my friends have the same story, they worked on 2-3 things that never finished and no one knows it exists. It's incredibly common to get that Big Break that remains in development hell forever and you have to keep on trying.
>>150532911Always thought this was Hirsch trying to do Flapjack again. It has the same happy kid and seedy loser hanging out in some smoggy seaside place thing going on.
>>150529034At least his friends keep giving him work. He had roles on Amphibia, Owl House, and Star Vs.
>>150532352I dunno, we still get leaks from time to time. Alex could pull a Deadpool and just leak it online anonymously. I don’t think anyone sharing stuff about this show on /co/ got fires or sued
>>150538994>he must have really relied on his writers for Gravity Falls Ehhh, I wouldn't go that far. A big reason for Hirsch burning himself out within less than two seasons was specifically because he stretched himself thin and insisted on helping pen every script. Even seeing his older promotional Xeets and his improv at con appearances, you can tell that Gravity Falls was a natural extension of his particular brand of humour. Hirsch understood comedy after his formative years being a Simpsons scholar, but it also was clear he understood that story structure, character motivations, and heart were just as important to the show he wanted to make. Inside Job and Mitchells vs Machines feel pretty distinct from Hirsch Humor, with the former's abuse of swears and the latter's joke ratio not being as strong. Hirsch was the secret weapon, but he didn't need to spend so many all-nighters and kill himself for his mainstream TV cartoon. Matt Braly clearly learned from Hirsch's mistakes and understood when to step back and trust his writing staff to deliver.
>>150537273That was done by Hirsch?!! funny beacuse Gravity got greenlit around the time Up released on DVD
>>150539351Forgive my mistake then. He was definitely out of college by then and must've been working on Fish Hooks/developing Gravity Falls. The Disney Channel jabs were already formulating that early
>>150536500That sounds great but where’s the story and character
>>150529034This would've sucked and you all know it.
>>150530684>Drones suckThat's mean, Alex.
>>150540866Yeah but it would have made people stop idolizing Alex.
>>150540866Toil & Trouble on the other hand...
>>150541868tbf Lauren at least still owns the rights but not the artwork
>>150540868>That background>2 hours and he hasn't showed up he most be asleep
>>150531425Has he cooled down lately? Did he say anything about KOG?
>>150543461Why so late?
>>150529034Do we know when Alex Hirsch's Netflix contract expires? I don't think there's a worse place he could be tethered to.
>>150542685oh I didn't know that
>>150529034>Somehow cannot afford a 2D adult animated show that mixes live-action, stop-motion and cgiNot defending Netfflix in the slightest here, but you vastly underestimate how ambitious that sort of concept would be. It's been nearly half a century and we still haven't made a movie that surpasses Who Framed Roger Rabbit in terms of technical skill. Hirsch wants to do that, AND add Stop-Motion and CGI into the mix? It's utterly absurd.
>>150544863She owns the IP but all the artwork of it is still owned by Netflix
>>150545675Wouldn't it be pretty close to Gumball's pipeline?Or am I misunderstanding?
>>150546663Gumball is like 90 percent CGI IIRC. Most of the backgrounds and characters outside the Wattersons are 3D models.
>>150534123Side note, i always hated Disney BLAM! and im glad Hirsch mimic the annoying voice of the narrator https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXnCotvQXj8https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4ydDZc940w&pp=ygULZGlzbmV5IGJsYW0%3D
>>150529034>Wastes 300Mhttps://youtu.be/SKOFp4C4_zo?feature=shared&t=65
>>150530690>character archetypesIs Stan shriner coded?Why?
>>150529034One was supported by sponsors & a big star like Chris Pratt. Alex Hirsch burned all his bridges with Disney, showing his unprofessionalism, & has a lot of rumored controversial behavior out there about him. Of course they didn't greenlight his next boring self insert show.
>>150529034>The Electric State>Look, we got the Russo Bros, they directed three MCU films that made billions of dollars>We also got Chris Pratt>We also got Millie Bobby Brown, from our popular show Stranger Things>What could possibly go wrong, lets throw 300M on it
>>150546663>>150547149Gumball proves why something like this can be too ambitious. Despite how its promoted as this multimedia art series with a whole class of multimedia characters, most of the time it can't even afford to have half of them in claas shots. The school looks so empty in a lot of episodes. Recurring characters with several speaking roles and episodes dedicated to them will just pop out of existence in a season then pop back in the next and there is an episode about that. The show always goes way over the season budget and there is also an episode about that. Entire scripted and storyboarded episodes had to be scrapped because they would have costed way too much to animate and cause several episodes to get cut. Just using Tina causes budget problems and the season she was most prominent in is the shortest one. Most new characters introduced after the first season are 2D animated. Gumball is a crazy money sink and the fact Cartoon Network took a risk with it right after the Real era bombed still surprises me. It's even more surprising when they rejected the original pitch for the show about a remedial school for rejected cartoons because they thought it would be too depressing. It must have some higher up that really likes the show like how Mike Lazzo loved Venture Bros or its the only thing holding the Europe branch together.
>>150549460Here's the thing, though. They DID greenlight it. Alex Hirsch just took too long to get the production ball rolling and made his new cartoon vulnerable once Netflix started cutting their original animation budget. We could've at least gotten one season out of this if Hirsch weren't such a perfectionist.
>>150552369His perfectionism & burnout could've been admired were these shows y'know more plot heavy serious shows. Gravity Falls tried having deepest lore but things like the symbols in the Bill circle don't come into play at all.
>>150552686>but things like the symbols in the Bill circle don't come into play at all.Yeah it did. In a stupid way I'll admit, Pacifica's llama sweater didn't exist before that episode.
>>150542685Which is a real bummer, because it's one of the highlights for me…I can't imagine it looking nicer than what we've seen,>>150542707I know he said he really liked it and debunked having a spot in the cast on Twitter.
>>150552804Well just in a stupid way then. I think that's a problem with these shows. If you wanna do plot then focus on that while maybe having your writing staff do the filler stuff on their own. Otherwise just have a comedic show like most of it is.
>>150548781Nope very real >At a time when movie executives are trying to keep cinema alive with auteur-driven, genre-defying fare, consider the arrival of Netflix’s $320M Russo Brothers-directed sci-fi robot original family film Electric State. Netflix put it in in two theaters this weekend – iPic Westwood and iPic Fulton Market – with 24 showtimes and an average ticket price of $19.35. The grosses for Electric State will go unreported, with its streaming debut this Friday the main focus.https://deadline.com/2025/03/box-office-mickey-17-1236313830/
