They grew up with the series and, like any child, they self-inserted themselves into it. One thing about the Finn relationship episodes is how, instead of making everything run smoothly, they wrote Finn as a kid his age, and not just any kid, but a kid who grew up in this magical world. Not knowing much about his own sexuality.

I'll say that Breezy in a vacuum is bad but not deal-breaking. The problem was that the show kept going back and forth between trying to commit to something and then reneging on it for a while by the time it aired, and it was pretty much the final straw for a looooot of people. The LSP rape on top of everything was just an extra layer of rubbing the salt in the wound with Finn getting his arm back.
