I didn't know Planet of the Apes had a cartoon, Was the franchise really that big and successful?
>>
>>150551277
There are more than 10 films in the franchise. Of course it’s wildly popular, everyone loves monkeys.

I hate it. I hate planet of the apes. I hate apes in general. I hate every chimp I see, from chimpan-A to chimpan-Z!

The studio tried to make it a popular series, but nobody was listening.
-five films, each with 2/3 the box office of the previous entry
-spin off TV series that only lasted one year.
-spin off animated series that only lasted one year.

The 21st century remakes have been more successful.

There was a toy line by Mego that was apparently one of the top ten selling lines of both 1974 or 1975. It wasn't as unpopular by the fifth movie as you're trying to make it sound.

I suppose that if they had been other animals, furries would have started much earlier.
>>
>>150551277
I remember that show. I recall there were a group of mutant humans that worshiped one of the astronauts. Looking back, that was pretty odd.
>>
>>150552190
yeah, they shoulda had them 'meet Scooby Doo' or something..
>>
>>150553130
?? there is nothing wrong with saying that was weird, the live action movies had some wacky stuff too

It had a relatively brief but strong couple years of popularity that helps anchor it to this day. Maybe more cult popular than massive, and bigger with kids than adults which is why the series started targeting kids more with the TV shows and later movies(though they aren't necessarily goofy, just aimed more at a younger audience).
It's one of those things where, if you're a 70's kid, it's big with you like the Six Million Dollar man, but it's not as popular with 80's kids onward.
Dana Gould, Simpsons writer and voice of Gex, actually does his own spoof talk show unsanctioned on youtube where he plays Doctor Zaius hosting a show like Space Ghost C2C
>>
>>150554553
I was actually serious
>>
There was also a lot of comics. I think there was even crossover with Alien Nation.
>>
The cartoon is amusingly and very, very, very sparsely animated. The faces are often drawn quite weirdly, which made them fun to use in ytp's from a billion years ago.

>>
>>150555470
One of the comics has apes settled around the Bass Pro Shop pyramid and the humans are more like wild west pioneers.
There's also a surprisingly good Green Lantern crossover

There was a chunk of the 70s where it was probably one of the most popular children's/young adult franchises. Honestly like the the entire original movie series is very solid even though the budgets progressively get smaller for each sequel. There's a lot of very good acting and interesting scifi stuff there.

Give at least the original a watch sometime, you will be surprised how much you enjoy it.
>>
>>150551623
but anon, you are an ape.
>>
>>150555628
I dont know how or why the Kong crossover doesnt get more love. It fills in the gape between POTA2 and POTA3 while telling its own crazy story. Really underrated.
>>
>>150554723
Yeah, when you watch them as a kid, terms like Lawgiver, Ape Law, and "Get your filthy paws off of me, you damn dirty ape" stick in your mind.
>>
>>150551277
It was THE 'nerd' franchise from 1968 until Star Wars came out.

Movies, toys, TV, animation, games. It basically made George Lucas realize the importance of retaining merchandising rights.

The Saturday morning series is surprisingly mature for it's time.

Jeez don't blow up the earth anon
>>
The TV series is a little closer to the original book in that the apes have machines like airplanes. The movie skipped that probably because horses and fake-looking ape rifles were cheaper.
>>
>>150558789
It was budget reasons on why ape society had that primitive look.

There was a different sequel proposed for called "The Planet of Men". It never got past the script written phase. The short story was Taylor and Nova had a son that lead an uprising against the apes and Dr. Zaius loses his intelligence and becomes a circus ape.

It always bothered me that Zaius and the other Pongos in the original Ape movies have yellow fur.
>>
>>150558789
From what I've seen of the LA series, it was more renaissance period with some individuals (mainly humans) rediscovering tech
I thought the rifles were cool looking. They actually took the time to have them uniquely styled instead of standard prop guns,, though they're probably based on ergonomic grips of the time.

Incidentally, stopped by a library book sale for a second look today and picked up a copy of Boulle's book a somehow missed the first time.

>Was the franchise really that big and successful?
>DID THANG THAT EXISTED BEFORE MY DADDY FAILED HIS PULL-OUT GAME ACTUALLY MATTER???
God you zoomers are stupid.
>>
>>150551718
The first movie was popular because it was a novel concept with high production values. Most of the sequels were cheap lazy cash grabs that couldn't figure out what to do with the premise.
>>
>>150560925
Sorry, I meant it's the cartoon has ape machines in it.
>>
Once upon a time it was the biggest thing next to Star Wars.
>>
>>150551525
not Barbary macaques
>>
>>150551861
I don't know what some anons are talking about, (You)'re spot on
There was some marathon matinee Fox did of all the POTA movies after they all came out that was very popular, especially among children
Marty Abrams of Mego hears about this and snatches up the toy rights and makes a shit ton of money
Mind you movie tieins were considered poison before the Apes toyline after Dolittle bombed
PlaidStallions did a good video on it

If you want to know how successful Apes became just look at how many knockoff toys were made in the 70s

Mine came apart and got thrown out. I still have some of the clothes and little m-16 though because I kept them with my Star Trek figures.

>>150562635
The Only thing I remember about that was the giant bird thing. Was checking the ep list on wiki awhile back and they made it sound like the mains were using old human stuff. I can see where they'd have the apes with their own equipment though. Horses are cheaper IRL but harder to animate.

70's nostalgia in general is underplayed compared to how big the 80's are. 70's kids mostly grew up and kept their childhood nostalgia stuff more vestigial, it's late 70's, 80's kids that really made their childhood their personality after Star Wars
>>
>>150555891
The fifth one was garbage.

It was wildly popular. Bunch of movies, live action tv show, novels, comics, cartoon, and probably a play or two.
>>
>>150551277
It was considered THE sci-fi series in the late 60s to 70s, until it got replaced by Star Wars.

And the mask work was extremely advanced and looks very good even today. Unfortunately they kept giving each sequel a lower and lower budget every time so it ended up with shit like the two main characters transported to contemporary New York so they could get it done with only 2-3 masks. It got rebooted in the 00s a bunch of times as well.
>>
>>150551277
I guess so?
>>
>>150564665
The Burton reboot didn't go anywhere and the current one seems doing well enough to get several sequels.
>>
>>150551277
Planet of the Apes was huge in the 60's - 70's.
>>
>>150566509
The Burton one kinda sucked.
The music was good, the apes makeup was fucking amazing.
And most of the apes characters were good.

Too bad every human in the movie sucked or was completely uninteresting. And we were supposed to relate and cheer for them.

Also, Ari could get it...just sayian.
>>
>>150551782
>>150555722
lol classic
>>
I wonder how different Ape society would be if it had more ape species or even monkeys.
>>
>>150567294
I love legitimate theater.
>>
Japan loved the Apes movies, its how we got Time of the Apes and the monkeys that controlled the original Mechagodzilla
>>
>>150567336
Well, there are other apes like Bonobos and Gibbons.

The French novel from which the first Planet of the Apes movie was based on was named, "La Planète des singes" which translates as "Planet of the Simians". So yeah, you can add in monkeys too. Although the novel was a satire, I think it's something you can't take too seriously.

>>
>>150567381
Was Dr. Gori from Spectreman in the original japanese version? He even came back in Cromartie.

>>150558789
>>150560925
In the live action series, the apes go apeshit when they see humans starting to use airplanes, apparently that was too advanced for them.
Humans at least can already talk, wear clothes, have something of a society and all.

>>150552190
The second movie had mutated humans who worshipped an ultra nuke that humanity left behind, too.

>>150555470
Is that the show with aliens out of Enemy Mine? Wasn't that already in the 80s?
>>
>>150568451
The humans the TV show were more like lower class peasants and apes were more like the clergy and warriors.
>>
>>150567381
But why doesn't Johnny care?
>>
>>150551277
PotA had shitloads of comics too.
>>
>>150551623
Will they finally make a monkey out of you?
>>
>>150551782
I always wanted to fuck the ape nurse.
>>
>>150551277
Yes, it was hugely successful in the 70s. It was Star Wars before Star Wars. And unlike Star Wars, most of the films are actually good.
>>
>>150568451
Yeah, the LA show kind of picks up after the altered timeline in Battle.
