What made peak Bob stand out compared to the other Nicktoons at the time, was it something that kids gravitated compared to something like The Angry Beavers.

SpongeBob blew up in popularity because it managed to strike a perfect balance between a wacky cartoon where anything can happen and a grounded show that can be relatable, this made it appeal to all ages.

The reason the show is widely regarded to have gone downhill after Hillenburg left was because every season after was missing that grounded charm, the Tibbitt seasons were pure slop, and while I do feel like the recent seasons can be enjoyable half the time, even the best episodes are missing that grounded charm that made the golden age so enjoyable in the first place. I mean it is cool though that the classic seasons are still rerun on Nick so younger generations can grow up with them, I’m a zoomer who grew up during the Tibbitt seasons and even I enjoyed the reruns of classic episodes more.

Well let's see...
>Rocko
>Angry Beavers
>CatDog
>Ren and Stimpy
>Cow and Chicken
All of these:
- feel like degrees of their creators' progressing mental illness, not something aimed at children
- don't even have a proper cast or setting, just one or two protagonists getting into random wacky situations
- take place in a generic boring urban setting
- have muted colors with a lot of beige and brown, not very appealing to children all things considered

Spongebob:
- was explicitly made to have wide appeal and have comprehensible humorous plots instead of "Ren invents a time machine AND THEN HIS BUTT EATS HIM!!!!!!!!!!!"
- iconic memorable cast of characters (everyone knows Squidward and Mr Krabs, no one remembers the CatDog rabbit)
- a cool unique underwater setting (kids wished they could live in bikini bottom, no one wished they could live in O-Town or some shit)
- uses bright colors that complement both those things

The former were made to appeal to their creators. The latter was made to appeal to the wide audiences and actual children.

Yes and it suffered the same faults. Hence why it didn't last air the 2000s.

It had a neat visual appeal and was really, really funny. I was fucking wheezing the first time I saw episodes like Wet Painters and Chocolate with nuts. And the episodes that weren't gut-bustingly funny tended to still have their own appeal like a chill atmosphere or neat idea.

Why did Spongebob take off and Rocket Power didn't?

Rocket Power had all the ingredients of Nick's next big hit. It was a Klasky-Csupo show about kids playing sports.
